Students often struggle to apply their knowledge of bioscience to their care practice. Such knowledge is generally learned through remembering and understanding, but retention quickly fades. They also experience difficulty progressing to higher-order cognitive skills such as applying, analyzing, evaluating, and even creating, which are necessary to develop soft skills, such as critical thinking, in the care profession.

From intramural ectopic pregnancy to hysterectomy: A case report.

Case Rep Womens Health

March 2024

Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service, 1 Hospital Boulevard Southport, QLD 4215, Australia.

An intramural ectopic pregnancy is one of the rarest types of ectopic pregnancy, and due to the scarcity of reported cases there are no clear guidelines regarding diagnosis and management of the condition. We report a case of a non-viable intramural ectopic pregnancy managed with intravenous methotrexate, in a patient with no previous pregnancies but a history of uterine cornual cyst excision. The patient subsequently developed a uterine arteriovenous malformation, which was embolised.

Gabapentinoids is a class of drug with analgesic, anxiolytic, and anticonvulsant properties and has a reported increase in prescription, use, and adverse outcomes. Regional studies are scant, and postmortem toxicological data may characterise patterns of regional use and inform local interventions. Characterising drug and non-drug-related deaths with gabapentinoid detection may also aid in toxicology interpretation.

The placement of an endotracheal tube for children with acute or critical illness is a low-frequency and high-risk procedure, associated with high rates of first-attempt failure and adverse events, including hypoxaemia. To reduce the frequency of these adverse events, the provision of oxygen to the patient during the apnoeic phase of intubation has been proposed as a method to prolong the time available for the operator to insert the endotracheal tube, prior to the onset of hypoxaemia. However, there are limited data from randomised controlled trials to validate the efficacy of this technique in children.

Herein, we compared peri-operative and post-operative outcomes between robotic-assisted and laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. Various reviews of the current literature have detailed the lack of single-surgeon studies in this domain. Our study featured a single surgeon experienced in both approaches to reduce this bias seen in other multi-centre studies.

Infect Dis Health

August 2023

Infection Control Department, Gold Coast University Hospital, 1 Hospital Boulevard, Southport, QLD, 4215, Australia. Electronic address:

Background: The successful adoption and application of infection prevention and control (IPC) principles in all healthcare settings is dependent on the degree to which healthcare workers (HCWs) are aware of the requirements, have access to program resources and information, and engage with the IPC program. This study investigates the impact of redesigning the Infection Control Department (ICD) intranet site based on user feedback followed by a targeted marketing campaign to improve website usability, awareness, and access.

Methods: In this systematic study, we used a survey plus two focus group interviews to elicit user requirements for the content and look of the ICD intranet page and identify the best communication platforms to use for the marketing campaign to launch the redesigned intranet page.

Burkitt's lymphoma follows a lymphogenous spread early in the disease. The central nervous system can be involved via a hematogenous route but involvement of the cavernous sinus (CS) is rare and can be misdiagnosed as other pathology of primary neoplastic, infective, or vascular origin. We present a case of a 73-year-old gentleman with painless jaundice and subjective heaviness to his eyes that progressed to partial ptosis of the left eye, complete ptosis of the right eye with diplopia, found to have disseminated Burkitt's lymphoma with bilateral deposits to the CS.

Penile strangulation from a foreign body is a time critical and rare presentation to the emergency department. The rarity of the presentation leads to its management being haphazard by the treating clinicians leading to suboptimal outcomes. We present a 44-year-old male with nine metal rings strangulating his penis and scrotum who failed multiple attempts by the department to free the penis and required an industrial circular saw provided by the fire-brigade to successfully cut the rings.
