Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) type II is caused by antibody production that bind complexes between heparin and platelet factor 4 leading to platelet consumption and thrombosis. In a small subset of cases referred to as autoimmune HIT, the antibodies activate platelets even in the absence of heparin. Refractory HIT is a type of autoimmune HIT in which thrombocytopenia persists for weeks after heparin discontinuation and carries increased risk for thrombosis and more severe thrombocytopenia.

Unfortunately, college health practitioners have invested time and effort implementing interventions that either fail to account for the complexity of this public health problem or are not evidence-based. Consequently, in September 2015, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism published CollegeAIM, which was developed to support higher education administrators and campus health/wellness professionals in selecting appropriate interventions for reducing harmful and underage drinking.

Blalock proposed that the threat of a minority group toward a majority in sheer size, economic competition, or power will result in an increase in discrimination toward that group. His original formulation of this theory of minority group threat, and its subsequent extensions, has focused almost exclusively on racial minority-majority relationships; however, Blalock asserted that his theory would apply to any minority-majority group relationship. Extensions to religious groups have shown this is likely the case.
