Background: Patients who take aspirin and sustain traumatic intracranial hemorrhage (tICH) are often transfused platelets in an effort to prevent bleeding progression. The efficacy of platelet transfusion is questionable, however, and some medical societies recommend that platelet reactivity testing (PRT) should guide transfusion decisions. The study hypothesis was that utilization of PRT to guide platelet transfusion for tICH patients suspected of taking aspirin would safely identify patients who did not require platelet transfusion.

MBX-2168 has a mechanism of action similar to that of acyclovir (ACV) and ganciclovir (GCV), but two unique steps differentiate this drug from ACV/GCV. First, MBX-2168 is, at least partially, phosphorylated by the endogenous cellular kinase TAOK3 to a monophosphate. The second involves the removal of a moiety at the 6-position of MBX-2168-MP by adenosine deaminase like protein-1 (ADAL-1).

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a potential alternative to classical antibiotics that are yet to achieve a therapeutic breakthrough for treatment of systemic infections. The antibacterial potency of pleurocidin, an AMP from Winter Flounder, is linked to its ability to cross bacterial plasma membranes and seek intracellular targets while also causing membrane damage. Here we describe modification strategies that generate pleurocidin analogues with substantially improved, broad spectrum, antibacterial properties, which are effective in murine models of bacterial lung infection.

Introduction: There is a paucity of data on educational interventions that prepare students to mitigate the stigma or burden of alcohol use disorder. The objectives of this study were to (1) assess the impact of an interprofessional symposium on personal knowledge and stigma of alcohol use disorder and (2) inform future educational models.

Methods: The symposium highlighted the impact of alcohol at one private Midwestern university and reviewed the pharmacology of alcohol, diagnostic criteria for alcohol use disorder, and treatment for alcohol use disorder.

To determine how postgraduate year one (PGY1) pharmacy residency program directors perceive factors related to advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs) when selecting candidates for residency interviews. An online cross-sectional nationwide survey of 1,280 PGY1 residency program directors was conducted. Participants were asked to rank the overall influence of five APPE categories, including location, structure, elective type, timing, and preceptor references, as well as the desirability and necessity of APPE-related variables representing the five categories, in their assessment of residency candidates.

Basaglar, insulin glargine (BGlar; Eli Lilly, Indianapolis, IN), a follow-on biologic, was developed after the patent for Lantus, insulin glargine (LGlar; Sanofi-Aventis, Paris, France) expired. The third generation of methylenecyclopropane nucleoside analogs (MCPNAs) elicit an anti-viral effect against all three sub-classes of herpes viruses without inducing cytotoxicity in vitro. It has been previously established that the mechanism of action of MCPNAs is similar to that of ganciclovir (GCV) or acyclovir (ACV). However, the activation of MBX-2168, a third generation MCPNA, involves additional and unique enzymatic steps and this process has not been examined in virus-infected cells.

Background: Patients who qualify for bariatric surgery are increasingly experiencing co-morbid conditions, which often require management through the use of immunosuppressive agents, such as corticosteroids, tumor necrosis factor-alpha inhibitors, or other immunomodulators, which may increase the risk of infection or wound healing complications. Perioperative management of these agents in bariatric surgery is challenging because of the lack of research in this patient population. With the use of immunosuppressive agents on the rise, the effects of these medications must be understood, both the risks posed in the perioperative period, and the benefit their sustained use may have for co-morbidity management.

The present study was aimed to investigate the effect of myrtenal on diabetes-associated oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation (LPO), and inflammation using a rat model of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes. Following the induction of diabetes in male Wistar rats using STZ (40 mg/kg body weight), myrtenal (80 mg/kg body weight) was administered orally to diabetic rats for four weeks and then sacrificed to harvest tissues. We measured the levels of antioxidants, LPO, and proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin 6 (IL-6), and the p65 subunit of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB p65).
