Deformities of the lesser toes are a prevalent condition faced by orthopedic surgeons. An imbalance between the extensor and flexor muscles might cause these deformities, affecting the metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) and interphalangeal joint (IPJ). Therefore, a thorough understanding of the anatomy, biomechanics of the MTPJ, the surrounding structures, and the pathogenesis of lesser toe deformities is crucial for ensuring the correct diagnosis and treatment of the deformities.

Article Synopsis
  • X-ALD (adrenoleukodystrophy) is caused by the loss of the ABCD1 transporter, leading to an accumulation of very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) that disrupt vital cellular functions for axonal maintenance.
  • Using advanced imaging techniques, researchers found that this VLCFA excess leads to mitochondrial fragmentation in mouse models and patient cells, affecting mitochondrial health.
  • Targeting DRP1, a key protein involved in mitochondrial fission, showed promise in preventing these issues and preserving axonal integrity, indicating potential therapeutic strategies for X-ALD.

This study aimed to create an individualized analysis model of the risk of intensive care unit (ICU) admission or death for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients as a tool for the rapid clinical management of hospitalized patients in order to achieve a resilience of medical resources. This is an observational, analytical, retrospective cohort study with longitudinal follow-up. Data were collected from the medical records of 3489 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 using RT-qPCR in the period of highest community transmission recorded in Europe to date: February-June 2020.

The aim of this study was to compare the immediate postoperative period of participants rehabilitated with dental implants placed with a conventional technique or with a minimally invasive technique, without a mucoperiosteal flap elevation (flapless). Participants who needed implant placement were divided into two groups: one group was operated using a mucoperiosteal flap elevation (G_A), and the other with a flapless surgical technique (G_B). Objective clinical parameters including oral hygiene, mouth opening, inflammation (facial perimeter), surgical time and analgesic consumption, as well as subjective parameters of pain and degree of satisfaction with the procedure, were evaluated.

Taxane-Induced Peripheral Neurotoxicity.

Toxics

April 2015

Unit of Neuro-Oncology, Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge-ICO Duran i Reynals, 08907 L´Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain.

Taxane-derived agents are chemotherapy drugs widely employed in cancer treatment. Among them, paclitaxel and docetaxel are most commonly administered, but newer formulations are being investigated. Taxane antineoplastic activity is mainly based on the ability of the drugs to promote microtubule assembly, leading to mitotic arrest and apoptosis in cancer cells.

January 2008

Departament of Surgery, Hospital Universitario de Bellvitge, Feixa Llarga s/n, 08907 LHospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain.

Background And Aims: The prognostic value of the degree of apoptosis in colorectal cancer is controversial. This study evaluates the putative clinical usefulness of measuring caspase-3 activity as a prognostic factor in colonic cancer patients receiving 5-fluoracil adjuvant chemotherapy.

Materials And Methods: We evaluated caspase-3-like protease activity in tumours and in normal colon tissue.
