Background: The severity criteria for eating disorders (EDs) proposed in the DSM-5 have been established without sufficient empirical support. Drive for thinness (DT) and duration of illness have been proposed as two alternative severity measures, however their empirical evidence is also limited. To date, no research has assessed the validity of current eating disorder (ED) severity criteria regarding cognitive flexibility factors.

Article Synopsis
  • A study involving 4,381 nursing students from 15 schools in Catalonia revealed that many lack understanding in assessing nicotine dependence and smoking cessation treatments.
  • Most students have basic knowledge of smoking risks but are inadequately trained in practical tobacco cessation support, highlighting the need for improved education in nursing programs on tobacco dependence and treatments.

Background: The high recurrence of glioblastoma (GB) that occurs adjacent to the resection cavity within two years of diagnosis urges an improvement of therapies oriented to GB local control. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been proposed to cleanse infiltrating tumor cells from parenchyma to ameliorate short long-term progression-free survival. We examined 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA)-mediated PDT effects as therapeutical treatment and determined optimal conditions for PDT efficacy without causing phototoxic injury to the normal brain tissue.

Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in myasthenia gravis (MG) is frequently decreased. Further, there are many validated clinical scales and questionnaires to evaluate the clinical status in MG. We aimed to determine if there was an improvement in HRQOL following an intensive treatment for MG, identify which demographic and clinical features influenced patients' HRQOL, and investigate if the questionnaire MG-QOL15 correlated with other evaluation scales.

Targeted agents have emerged as promising molecules for cancer treatment, but most of them fail to achieve complete tumor regression or attain durable remissions due to tumor adaptations. We used dynamic BH3 profiling to identify targeted agents effectiveness and anti-apoptotic adaptations upon targeted treatment in rhabdomyosarcoma. We focused on studying the use of BH3 mimetics to specifically inhibit pro-survival BCL-2 family proteins, overwhelm resistance to therapy and prevent relapse.

The anionic cobaltabis (dicarbollide) [3,3'-Co(1,2-CBH)], [-COSAN], is the most studied icosahedral metallacarborane. The sodium salts of [-COSAN] could be an ideal candidate for the anti-cancer treatment Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) as it possesses the ability to readily cross biological membranes thereby producing cell cycle arrest in cancer cells. BNCT is a cancer therapy based on the potential of B atoms to produce α particles that cross tissues in which the B is accumulated without damaging the surrounding healthy tissues, after being irradiated with low energy thermal neutrons.

Therapeutic resistance after multimodal therapy is the most relevant cause of glioblastoma (GBM) recurrence. Extensive cellular heterogeneity, mainly driven by the presence of GBM stem-like cells (GSCs), strongly correlates with patients' prognosis and limited response to therapies. Defining the mechanisms that drive stemness and control responsiveness to therapy in a GSC-specific manner is therefore essential.

Changes in phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) concentrations secondary to variations in glucose availability can regulate calcium signaling in T cells as this metabolite potently inhibits the sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca/ATPase pump (SERCA). This regulation is critical to assert immune activation in the tumor as T cells and cancer cells compete for available nutrients. We examined here whether cytosolic calcium and the activation of downstream effector pathways important for tumor biology are influenced by the presence of glucose and/or cataplerosis through the phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) pathway, as both are hypothesized to feed the PEP pool.

Targeting striatal metabotropic glutamate receptor type 5 in Parkinson's disease: bridging molecular studies and clinical trials.

Metabotropic glutamate (mGlu) receptors are G protein-coupled receptors expressed primarily on neurons and glial cells modulating the effects of glutamatergic neurotransmission. The pharmacological manipulation of these receptors has been postulated to be valuable in the management of some neurological disorders. Accordingly, the targeting of mGlu5 receptors as a therapeutic approach for Parkinson's disease (PD) has been proposed, especially to manage the adverse symptoms associated to chronic treatment with classical PD drugs.
