Article Synopsis
  • Patients with multiple hepatocellular carcinoma (MHCC) often face advanced stages at diagnosis, making treatment decisions challenging; this study seeks to identify prognostic factors and create a model to assess risk and survival.
  • The research used data from the SEER database to construct prognostic models through various techniques, including Cox regression and machine learning, evaluating their effectiveness with metrics like C-index and AUC.
  • The gradient boosted machine (GBM) model emerged as the most reliable for predicting outcomes in MHCC patients, demonstrating strong performance in both training and test cohorts, alongside the ability to differentiate patient prognoses through a new risk stratification system.

Background: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) has a poor prognosis and is understudied. Based on the clinical features of patients with ICC, we constructed machine learning models to understand their importance on survival and to accurately determine patient prognosis, aiming to develop reference values to guide physicians in developing more effective treatment plans.

Methods: This study used machine learning (ML) algorithms to build prediction models using ICC data on 1,751 patients from the SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results) database and 58 hospital cases.

NEK7 is a serine/threonine kinase that regulates cell mitosis and the activation of the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like (NOD-like) receptor thermal protein domain associated protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, and is related to neuroinflammation and neuronal damage. The purpose of this study was to explore the role and mechanism of NEK7 in cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease (AD). BV2 cells, a microglia cell line, was treated with Aβ.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a common perinatal disease, is related to increased risks of maternal and neonatal adverse perinatal outcomes. We aimed to establish GDM risk prediction models that can be widely used in the first trimester using four different methods, including a score-scaled model derived from a meta-analysis using 42 studies, a logistic regression model, and two machine learning models (decision tree and random forest algorithms). The score-scaled model (seven variables) was established via a meta-analysis and a stratified cohort of 1075 Chinese pregnant women from the Northwest Women's and Children's Hospital (NWCH) and showed an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.

Postoperative day 1 serum cystatin C level predicts postoperative delayed graft function after kidney transplantation.

Front Med (Lausanne)

August 2022

Department of Anesthesiology and Center for Brain Science and Center for Translational Medicine, The First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Delayed graft function (DGF) is a common issue after kidney transplants, but there are currently no clinical predictors to guide post-transplant management.
  • A study analyzed data from 603 kidney transplant recipients to find a reliable predictor for DGF, focusing on factors like serum cystatin C (S-CysC) levels and other clinical variables.
  • Results showed that higher post-op day 1 S-CysC levels significantly indicate DGF, with a specific cut-off value of 3.80 mg/L, suggesting its potential use in clinical settings, though further research is recommended.
