Risk of cardiac conduction disorders, and pacemaker implantations among individuals tested for serum Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies, a nationwide, matched, population-based cohort study.

Clin Microbiol Infect

May 2024

Department of Infectious Diseases, Copenhagen University Hospital - Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, Denmark; Department of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Objectives: To investigate the short- and long-term risks of atrioventricular block and other cardiac conduction disorders associated with being tested for Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb) antibodies or Bb seropositivity as measures of confounding by indication and Bb infection, respectively.

Methods: We performed a nationwide population-based matched cohort study (Denmark, 1993-2021). We included 52 200 Bb-seropositive individuals (stratified as only Bb-IgM-seropositive [n = 26 103], only Bb-IgG-seropositive [n = 18 698], and Bb-IgM-and-IgG-seropositive [n = 7399]) and two age- and sex-matched comparison cohorts: 104 400 Bb-seronegative individuals and 261 000 population controls.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the indication of "pain without loosening" as a reason for knee arthroplasty revisions in Danish patients, aiming to identify any hidden indications that may improve data quality in the Danish Knee Arthroplasty Register.
  • A total of 104 patients were reviewed, confirming "pain without loosening" as the primary reason in 103 cases, while also uncovering 44 hidden indications like malposition of components and stiffness.
  • The findings highlight that while "pain without loosening" is recognized, other significant causes need documentation in registers, with a notable concern regarding the frequency of early arthrosis grades prior to surgery possibly contributing to unexplained knee pain.

Background: Concomitant type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is frequent with a poor prognosis with high risk of comorbidities. Strict risk factor control reduces the risk for complications - yet many people do not achieve treatment targets. The complexity and fragmentation of the healthcare system may, together with the vulnerability of these patients, be a reason.

Intraarticular treatment of osteoarthritis with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) has shown promising results and is being increasingly implemented in the clinic. Autologous MSCs are the primary source of therapy but issues related to cell expansion, patient age, and acute therapies have opened a need for allogenic MSCs. Problematic immunological reactions such as pain, joint swelling, urticarial, and MSC destruction are, however, reported when using allogenic MSCs at the first to second treatment.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic demonstrated the need for accurate diagnostic testing for the early detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Although the pandemic has ended, accurate assays are still needed to monitor viral spread at national levels and beyond through population and wastewater surveillance. To enhance early detection, SARS-CoV-2 assays should have high diagnostic accuracy and should be validated to assure accurate results.

J Vis Exp

December 2023

Centre for Physical Activity Research, Copenhagen University Hospital; Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, Copenhagen University Hospital, Hvidovre Hospital.

Doppler ultrasound has revolutionized the assessment of organ blood flow and is widely used in research and clinical settings. While Doppler ultrasound-based assessment of contracting leg muscle blood flow is common in human studies, the reliability of this method requires further investigation. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the within-day test-retest, between-day test-retest, and inter-rater reliability of Doppler ultrasound for assessing leg blood flow during rest and graded single-leg knee-extensions (0 W, 6 W, 12 W, and 18 W), with the ultrasound probe being removed between measurements.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess whether certain genetic variations in the GIP receptor might increase fracture risk or lower bone mineral density (BMD) in people managing obesity through weight loss.
  • - Researchers analyzed three specific gene variants and a group of predicted loss-of-function variants across a large population of up to 1.2 million participants, examining their correlation to different types of fractures and BMD measurements.
  • - The findings indicated that none of the examined gene variants were linked to a higher risk of fractures or lower BMD, suggesting that these genetic factors do not adversely affect bone health in the context of obesity treatment.
