Debating Weight Loss vs. Weight Neutral Strategies for Improvements of Health.

Curr Obes Rep

December 2024

Department of Respiratory Diseases and Endocrinology, Amager and Hvidovre Hospital, Part of the Copenhagen University Hospital, Hvidovre, 2650, Denmark.

Purpose Of Review: Despite decades of development and testing of weight-loss interventions, the adult populations worldwide have witnessed a continuous rise in body weight. There is an ongoing debate about how to move forward. Some argue that this rise calls for more intensive and possibly life-long treatments, including the new effective GLP1 weight loss medications, while others have called for a fundamental shift away from weight and on to a broader understanding of health.

In patients previously hospitalised for COVID-19, a 12-week high-intensity interval training (HIIT) intervention has previously been shown to increase left ventricular mass (LVM) immediately after the intervention. In the present study, we examined the effects of the same HIIT scheme on LVM, pulmonary diffusing capacity, symptom severity and functional capacity at 12-month follow-up. In this investigator-blinded, randomised controlled trial, 12 weeks of a supervised HIIT scheme (4 × 4 min, three times a week) was compared to standard care (control) in patients recently discharged from hospital due to COVID-19.

This review evaluates the evidence for the use of over-the-scope clips (OTSC), topical haemostatic agents (THA), and prophylactic embolisation (PE) in patients with peptic ulcer bleeding (PUB). The use of OTSC and THA may have the potential to increase the rate of endoscopic haemostasis in PUB not responding to conventional endoscopic treatment. In patients at high risk of recurrent bleeding, the performance of PE after achieving endoscopic haemostasis can reduce the risk of rebleeding and the need for surgery.

While HC2 and GP5+/6+ PCR-EIA were pivotal in test validation of new HPV assays, they represent the first generation of comparator tests based upon technologies that are not in widespread use anymore. In the current guideline, criteria for second-generation comparator tests are presented that include more detailed resolution of HPV genotypes. Second-generation comparator tests should preferentially target only the 12 genotypes classified as carcinogenic (IARC-group I), and show consistent non-inferior sensitivity for CIN2+ and CIN3+ and specificity for ≤CIN1 compared to one of the first-generations comparators, in at least three validation studies using benchmarks of 0.
