Objective: To evaluate the mechanical behavior of the proximal end of the femur submitted to the X-shaped polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) reinforcement technique.
Methods: Fifteen synthetic femurs, with a Nacional density of 10 PCF, were divided into two groups: the DX group, with 5 units that were submitted to PMMA reinforcement, and the DP group, with 10 units, which were evaluated intact. The volume of PMMA required, the maximum load, and the absorbed energy to fracture were analyzed by means of a static mechanical bending test simulating a fall on the greater trochanter.

Adventitial cystic disease of the popliteal artery is an uncommon pathology that should be considered in differential diagnostic of younger patients with intermittent claudication and without risk factors for peripheral atherosclerotic arterial disease. We report the case of a 51 year-old male patient presenting with lower-limb intermittent claudication in whom this pathology was diagnosed and who was treated with segmental arterial resection and autologous saphenous vein interposition. We also discuss diagnostic and therapeutic alternatives.

Objectives: To report a case series of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in the foot, describing previous risk factors, surgical treatment, histopathological findings, and functional and oncological results.
Methods: Nine consecutive patients diagnosed with SCC of the foot were treated at a single institution and prospectively analyzed for risk factors related to the disease, surgical outcome, and histopathological, functional and oncological results. All patients had identifiable risk factors for SCC.
Objective The primary aim of this study was to survey current practices and preferences behind internal fixation of trochanteric femoral fractures among Brazilian orthopedic surgeons. The secondary aim was to identify the main reason for these preferences. Methods A survey containing 20 images of trochanteric fractures of the femur was presented to a group of 62 orthopedists, all members of the Brazilian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (SBOT).

Objective To collect criminal justice data involving medical professionals in the São Paulo State Court of Appeals and to establish the number of criminal proceedings involving said professionals, the content of the accusations and the conviction rate per specialty. Methods A keyword search was carried out in the State Appellate Court case law website with the term "medical error" for decisions rendered from January 1st, 2011 to December 31st, 2016, and the subject "criminal law" was selected. Results A total of 34 cases met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed.

Purpose: The aim of our study is to compare the mechanical resistance of two screw configurations in fixating type II Pauwels femoral neck fractures.
Methods: Fifteen synthetic models of femur bones in young adults were divided into three equal groups: intact (G1), models with fixation of a 5.0-mm failure zone created in the posterior cortex of the femoral neck using an L-shaped screw arrangement (G2, n = 5), and models with an identical failure zone fixated using an inverted triangle assembly (G3, n = 5).

Objective: To determine the ideal working area for a simple transverse fracture line treated with a bridge plate.
Methods: A 2-D finite element analysis of a hypothetical femur was performed for the quantitative evaluation of a large-fragment titanium alloy locking plate based on the precept of relative stability in a case of a simple transverse diaphyseal fracture. Two simulations (one case of strain and another case of stress distribution) were analyzed in three unique situations according to the von Mises stress theory.
Background: The universal accepted strategy for treating high-energy tibial plateau fractures remains a topic of ongoing debate. The challenge for the practicing orthopaedic trauma surgeon is to provide anatomical articular fracture reduction, with successfully managing the complex soft-tissue injury that is commonly present at patient admission. The primary aim of the actual study was to evaluate the results of a staged protocol for the treatment of high-energy bicondylar tibial plateau fractures.

To evaluate the mechanical stress and elastic deformation exercised in the thread/shaft transition of Schanz screws in assemblies with different screw anchorage distances in the entrance to the bone cortex, through the distribution and location of tension in the samples. An analysis of 3D finite elements was performed to evaluate the distribution of the equivalent stress (triple stress state) in a Schanz screw fixed bicortically and orthogonally to a tubular bone, using two mounting patterns: (1) thread/shaft transition located 20 mm from the anchorage of the Schanz screws in the entrance to the bone cortex and (2) thread/shaft transition located 3 mm from the anchorage of the Schanz screws in entrance to the bone cortex. The simulations were performed maintaining the same direction of loading and the same distance from the force vector in relation to the center of the hypothetical bone.

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to explore the real-life practice of clinical management of humeral shaft fracture associated with traumatic radial nerve palsy among orthopedic trauma surgeons.
Methods: Two hundred seventy-nine orthopedic surgeons worldwide reviewed 10 real cases of a humeral shaft fracture associated with traumatic radial nerve palsy answering two questions: (1) What treatment would you choose/recommend: nonoperative or operative? (2) What are the reasons for your decision-making? The survey was developed in an online survey tool. All participants were active members from AOTrauma International.

Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome is a rare genetic condition characterized by typical facial appearance, growth delay, psychomotor retardation and seizures, with a mosaic of other abnormalities reported in the literature. The occurrence of symptomatic wandering spleen with massive splenomegaly and with an indication for splenectomy has not been yet described for this disease. This study reports the first case in the literature of single port splenectomy for this rare condition.

High-energy fractures of the proximal tibia with extensive fragmentation of the posterior rim of the tibial plateau are challenging. This technique aims to describe a method on how to embrace the posterior rim of the tibial plateau by placing a horizontal precontoured one-third tubular plate wrapped around its corners. This method, which we named "hoop plating," is mainly indicated for cases of crushed juxta-articular rim fractures, aiming to restore cortical containment of the tibial plateau.

Objectives: to review radiographs of patients who suffered tendon tears of the knee extensor apparatus and observe alterations that might be factors predisposing toward this type of injury.
Methods: we retrospectively analyzed 60 cases of injury to the knee extensor mechanism that were treated surgically at the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital between March 2004 and March 2011. Four patients were excluded due to poor quality of the examination.

Background: Although the standard treatment for articular fractures usually involves open anatomic reduction and internal fixation with the concept of absolute stability, achieving adequate fracture stabilisation in multifragmentary patterns is always challenging. Several anatomical implants were developed to increase stabilisation and improve clinical outcomes in articular fractures. However modern implants, especially in developing countries, are expensive and not always available for routine use.
