Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease following Alzheimer's disease. Nearly 30 causative genes have been identified for PD and related disorders. However, most of these genes were identified in European-derived families, and little is known about their role in Latin American populations.

Objectives: To compare maternal and perinatal outcomes among women with obesity, overweight, and normal body mass index, associated with COVID-19 infection during pregnancy and postpartum.
Method: Prospective Cohort Study, within the REBRACO (Brazilian Network of COVID-19 in Pregnancy) multicenter initiative. Confirmed positive cases of SARS-CoV-2 were included, and women categorized into three groups according to their pre-pregnancy BMI: obesity (BMI ≥ 30), overweight (BMI <30 but >25), and normal BMI.

Objectives: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the modality of choice for rectal cancer initial staging and restaging after neoadjuvant chemoradiation. Our objective was to perform a meta-analysis of the diagnostic performance of the split scar sign (SSS) on rectal MRI in predicting complete response after neoadjuvant therapy.
Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases were searched for relevant published studies through June 2023.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) cause increased inflammatory signalling and oxidative damage. IBDs are correlated with an increased incidence of brain-related disorders suggesting that the gut-brain-axis exerts a pivotal role in IBD. Butyrate is one of the main microbial metabolites in the colon, and it can cross the blood-brain barrier, directly affecting the brain.

Background: The aim of this study was to establish a sheep model of the Puricelli biconvex arthroplasty (ABiP) technique in sheep for evaluating its functional, biological and histological parameters.
Methods: Ten Corriedale black sheep were submitted to TMJ total reconstruction with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) using ABiP and euthanized after 45 (n = 5) or 90 (n = 5) days. Control animals (n = 2) underwent sham operations and were euthanized after 45 days.

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of preeclampsia among cases of COVID-19 infection during pregnancy and the association between both conditions, in a multicenter cohort of Brazilian women with respiratory symptoms.
Study Design: Ancillary analysis of the Brazilian Network of COVID-19 in Obstetrics (REBRACO) study. We performed a nested case-control analysis selecting all women with COVID-19 and compared outcomes between women with and without PE.

Skin wounds represent a burden in healthcare. Our aim was to investigate for the first time the effects of defocused high-power diode laser (DHPL) on skin healing in an animal experimental model and compare it with gold standard low-level laser therapy. Male Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups: Negative control; Sham; 0.

Background: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and neurotrophin receptors have been recognized as fundamental regulators of normal brain development, homeostasis, and plasticity. They have also been studied in the behavior of central nervous system tumors. Here, we studied the pattern of BDNF, TrkB and p75NTR immunoexpression in peripheral benign and malignant neural lesions in head and neck.

Background: Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is an autosomal recessive inherited metabolic disease caused by deficient activity of the branched-chain α-keto acid dehydrogenase (BCKD) enzymatic complex. BCKD is a mitochondrial complex encoded by BCKDHA, BCKDHB, DBT, and DLD genes. MSUD is predominantly caused by Variants in BCKDHA, BCKDHB, and DBT genes encoding the E1α, E1β, and E2 subunits of BCKD complex, respectively.

This in vitro study evaluated the role of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) on viability and migration of human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) and its association to epigenetic mechanisms such as histone acetylation. The hDPSCs were characterized and assigned into control and PBMT groups. For the PBMT, five laser irradiations at 6-h intervals were performed using a continuous-wave InGaAlP diode laser.

Objectives: To evaluate the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), its tyrosine kinase receptor B (TrkB), and two downstream targets of this pathway, Akt and ribosomal protein S6 (RPS6), in normal oral mucosa (NOM), oral leukoplakia (OL), and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and correlate this expression with OSCC patients' outcomes, cell senescence, and "stemness" profile.
Materials And Methods: Ten cases of NOM, 32 OL, and 72 primary OSCC were included. Immunohistochemical analysis for BDNF, TrkB, p-TrkB, p-Akt, and p-RPS6 was performed.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) on histone 3 acetylation (acH3) and NF-κB expression during oral ulcer healing. A total of 48 male Wistar rats were divided into control group (CG) and PBMT group (n = 24 each). Traumatic ulcers were created in the dorsum of the rats' tongue with a punch tool.

Chimerism is a phenomenon in which an individual has cells with different genetic content from different zygotes. In dizygotic twins (DTs), chimerism is believed to occur through placental anastomoses that enable the bidirectional exchange of hematopoietic stem cells. Little is still known about chimerism frequency in twins, but several studies have shown a relation between chimerism and some conditions such as autism, Alzheimer's disease, and a group of autoimmune diseases such as Sjögren syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, and systemic sclerosis.

Malignancies from the salivary glands are rare and represent 11% of all cancers from the oropharyngeal anatomical area. Mucoepidermoid Carcinomas (MEC) is the most common malignancy from the salivary glands. Low survival rates of high-grade Mucoepidermoid Carcinomas (MEC) are particularly associated with the presence of positive lymph nodes, extracapsular lymph node spread, and perineural invasion.

Background: Ulna length (UL) has been used in mathematical formulas to predict the body height of healthy and sick individuals. However, the evaluation of its use with patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU) is scarce. The objective of this study was to develop a mathematical equation to estimate critically ill patients' height using the UL measure and to evaluate its agreement with measured standing height.
