Division of Periodontology, Department of Oral Medicine, Infection and Immunity, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston, MA 02115, USA.

This study evaluates the potential of erbium, chromium-doped:yttrium, scandium, gallium, and garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser irradiation to modify the titanium surface for optimal seeding of fibroblasts and osteoblasts in the treatment of peri-implantitis. Titanium discs were treated using the Er,Cr:YSGG laser, an ultrasonic device with a stainless tip, or titanium scalers. Changes in surface properties were analyzed by profilometer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Gingival recessions are vastly prevalent among the general population. With regards to their treatment, recent advancements in periodontal and microsurgical procedures, focusing on minimal invasiveness and patient-centered therapies, have propelled a shift in their contemporary treatment, highlighting the field of biologics and bioactive mediators. Among different classes and types of biologics, autologous platelet concentrates (APCs), also referred to as autologous blood-derived products, are commonly used and preferred among many clinicians.

Elavl1 is dispensable for appendicular skeletal development.

bioRxiv

September 2024

Department of Oral Medicine, Infection and Immunity, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Harvard University, Boston, USA.

Elavl1/HuR is a RNA binding protein implicated in multiple developmental processes with pleiotropic roles in RNA life cycle. Loss of Elavl1 is incompatible with life with early embryonic loss of Elavl1 in epiblast cells being lethal with defects in placental branching and embryonic tissue growth. Postnatal global deletion of Elavl1/HuR results in lethality with atrophy in multiple tissues mainly due to loss of progenitor cells.

Dendritic cells (DCs) are uniquely capable of transporting tumor antigens to tumor-draining lymph nodes (tdLNs) and interact with effector T cells in the tumor microenvironment (TME) itself, mediating both natural antitumor immunity and the response to checkpoint blockade immunotherapy. Using LIPSTIC (Labeling Immune Partnerships by SorTagging Intercellular Contacts)-based single-cell transcriptomics, we identified individual DCs capable of presenting antigen to CD4 T cells in both the tdLN and TME. Our findings revealed that DCs with similar hyperactivated transcriptional phenotypes interact with helper T cells both in tumors and in the tdLN and that checkpoint blockade drugs enhance these interactions.

Introduction: Maxillary sinus floor elevation is a surgical procedure intended to increase the volume of the bone vertically to accommodate dental implant placement. This intervention is frequently required for implant installation in the posterior maxilla, where the bone may be insufficient for securing implants of necessary length and stability. Sinus floor elevation can be completed either through a direct approach with a "window" through the lateral wall of the alveolar ridge or an indirect "transcrestal/transalveolar" sinus floor elevation (TSFE), which accesses the sinus floor through the crest of the edentulous ridge.

At present, a lack of consensus exists regarding the clinical impact of osteoporosis on alveolar bone metabolism during implant osseointegration. While limited preclinical and clinical evidence demonstrates a negative influence of osteoporosis on dental extraction socket healing, no preclinical studies offer data on the results of implant placement in 6-mo-old, ovariectomized (OVX) Sprague-Dawley rats. This study aimed to investigate the outcomes of dental tooth extraction socket healing and implant placement in a rodent model of osteoporosis following daily vehicle (VEH) or abaloparatide (ABL) administration.

Background: Patients who present to the emergency department (ED) with severe odontogenic infections are often hospitalized for surgical drainage and medical management. However, inpatient management of these patients can be financially burdensome. While medical indications for hospital admission are well established, it remains unclear if patient insurance status is associated with admission.

Single-cell analysis of peri-implant gingival tissue to assess implant biocompatibility and immune response.

J Prosthodont Res

September 2024

Department of Dentistry, National Taiwan University Hospital & Graduate Institute of Clinical Dentistry, School of Dentistry, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan.

Purpose: The innate immune response, particularly the reaction of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs), is crucial in shaping the outcomes of chronic inflammation, fibrosis, or osseointegration following biomaterial implantation. Peri-implantitis or peri-mucositis, inflammatory conditions linked to dental implants, pose a significant threat to implant success. We developed a single-cell analysis approach using a murine model to assess the immune response to implant materials, offering a practical screening tool for potential dental implants.
