The Atlantic bluefin tuna (hereafter referred to as "bluefin tuna"), one of the world's most valuable and exploited fish species, has been declining in abundance throughout the Atlantic from the 1960s until the mid-2000s. Following the establishment of drastic management measures, the stock has started to recover recently and, as a result, stakeholders have raised catch quotas by 50% for the period 2017-2020. However, stock assessments still omit the natural, long-term variability in the species distribution.

We experimentally investigate the effects of parametric instabilities on the short-time heating process of periodically-driven bosons in 2D optical lattices with a continuous transverse (tube) degree of freedom. We analyze three types of periodic drives: (i) linear along the -lattice direction only, (ii) linear along the lattice diagonal, and (iii) circular in the lattice plane. In all cases, we demonstrate that the BEC decay is dominated by the emergence of unstable Bogoliubov modes, rather than scattering in higher Floquet bands, in agreement with recent theoretical predictions.

During storage, a series of changes occur for dairy powders, such as protein lactosylation and the formation of Maillard reaction products (MRPs), leading to powder browning and an increase of insoluble matter. The kinetics of protein lactosylation and MRP formation are influenced by the lactose content of the dairy powder. However, the influence of lactose in the formation of insoluble matter and its role in the underlying mechanisms is still a subject of speculation.

Magnesium has been trending of late in automobile, aerospace, defense, sports, electronic and biomedical sectors as it offers an advantage in light-weighting. In aluminum, titanium, and steel dominated aerospace and defense sectors, applications of Mg were banned/restricted until recently due to perceived easy ignition and inability to self-extinguish immediately. Strength is generally inversely related to ductility, weak texture and unrelated to ignition resistance, making it challenging to optimize all four concurrently in a material.

Methoxymethanol, CHOCHOH is a very interesting candidate for detection in the interstellar medium since it can be formed in the recombination reaction between two radicals considered as intermediates in methanol formation: CHO (already detected in the ISM) and CHOH. It could also be formed by the addition of CHO to formaldehyde (another abundant compound in the ISM) followed by abstraction of a hydrogen radical. In this study, we present the first spectroscopic characterization of methoxymethanol in the millimeter-wave range augmented by high level quantum chemical calculations.

Allograft inflammatory factor 1 (AIF-1) is a highly conserved gene involved in inflammation, cloned and characterized in several evolutionary distant animal species. Here, we report the molecular identification, characterization and expression of AIF-1 from the common sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. In this species, AIF-1 encodes a predicted 151 amino acid protein with high similarity to vertebrate AIF-1 proteins.

In this report, indium-tin-oxide (ITO)-layer extraction from end-of-life (EOL) Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) was discussed by sulfuric acid leaching with simultaneous application of ultrasonication on the ITO-side of glass/ITO panels, exhibiting various dimensions. Applying this technique presents several advantages compared to the traditional leaching process such as fast and controllable kinetics, high extraction yield of indium and tin, selective recovery of these two metals possible, and the opportunity to recycle the neat glass separately avoiding additional separation processes. ITO-dissolution kinetics from EOL LCD panels were investigated as function of leaching time and acidity of sulfuric acid.

Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) family mediate the influx of monovalent and/or divalent cations into cells in response to environmental stimuli. Pharmacological or genetic manipulations of TRP channels demonstrate that TRP channels influence cell death rates, prolonging or shortening of cell survival. Due to their diverse cellular localization, TRP channels mediated Ca influx generates distinct intracellular Ca signals that regulate downstream pathways converging to apoptosis or survival.

Our approach is based on the identification of saccharidic fingerprints using mass spectrometry following controlled enzymatic hydrolysis. Reproductive isolation can rise either as a consequence of genomic divergence in allopatry or as a byproduct of divergent selection in parapatry. To determine whether reproductive isolation in gynodioecious Silene nutans results from allopatric divergence or from ecological adaptation following secondary contact, we investigated the pattern of postzygotic reproductive isolation and hybridization in natural populations using two phylogeographic lineages, western (W1) and eastern (E1). Experimental crosses between the lineages identified strong, asymmetric postzygotic isolation between the W1 and the E1 lineages, independent of geographic overlap.

The localized deformation of molecular monolayers constrained between the spherical surfaces of Au nanoparticles is studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Alkyl or polyethylene glycol long-chain molecules were homogeneously distributed over the curved Au surface, pushed against each other by repeated cycles of force relaxation and constant-volume equilibration at temperatures increasing from 50 to 300 K before being slowly quenched to near-zero temperature. Plots of minimum configurational energy can be obtained as a function of the nanoparticle distance, according to different directions of approach; therefore, such simulations describe a range of deformations, from perfectly uniaxial compression to a combination of compression and shear.

An in-depth study of metal assisted chemical etching (MACE) of p-type c-Si in HF/HO aqueous solutions using Pt nanoparticles as catalysts is presented. Combination of cyclic voltammetry, open circuit measurements, chronoamperometry, impedance spectroscopy, and 2D band bending modeling of the metal/semiconductor/electrolyte interfaces at the nanoscale and under different etching conditions allows gaining physical insights into this system. Additionally, in an attempt to mimic the etching conditions, the modeling has been performed with a positively biased nanoparticle buried in the Si substrate.

Angstrom resolution images of human tooth enamel (HTE) crystallites were obtained using aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy in the modes of bright field, annular dark field, and high-angle annular dark-field. Images show that the central dark line (CDL) defect observed around the center of the HTE crystals is a site for caries formation in the HTE and has a thickness of ~0.2 nm.

A series of [Co(III)(N4Py)(X)](ClO4)n (X = Cl(-), Br(-), OH(-), N3(-), NCS(-)-κN, n = 2: X = OH2, NCMe, DMSO-κO, n = 3) complexes containing the tetrapyridyl N5 ligand N4Py (N4Py = 1,1-di(pyridin-2-yl)-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)methanamine) has been prepared and fully characterized by infrared (IR), UV-visible, and NMR spectroscopies, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS), elemental analysis, X-ray crystallography, and electrochemistry. The reduced Co(II) and Co(I) species of these complexes have been also generated by bulk electrolyses in MeCN and characterized by UV-visible and EPR spectroscopies. All tested complexes are catalysts for the photocatalytic production of H2 from water at pH 4.

LVV-h7 (LVVYPWTQFR) is a bioactive peptide that can be obtained from blood as waste of food industry, more precisely from hemoglobin hydrolysis by pepsin. This opioid peptide belongs to the hemorphins family and have strong physiological effects that bring its use in pharmaceutics and various therapeutic treatments attractive, in particular for substituting its costly chemically synthetized analogous. Hemoglobin hydrolysis by pepsin generates a huge variety of peptides among whose LVV-h7 can be purified by liquid-liquid extraction (LLE).
