Light-Programmable g-CN Microrobots with Negative Photogravitaxis for Photocatalytic Antibiotic Degradation.

Research (Wash D C)

January 2025

Future Energy and Innovation Laboratory, Central European Institute of Technology, Brno University of Technology, Brno 61200, Czech Republic.

Microrobots enhance contact with pollutants through their movement and flow-induced mixing, substantially improving wastewater treatment efficiency beyond traditional diffusion-limited methods. g-CN is an affordable and environmentally friendly photocatalyst that has been extensively researched in various fields such as biomedicine and environmental remediation. However, compared to other photocatalytic materials like TiO and ZnO, which are widely used in the fabrication of micro- and nanorobots, research on g-CN for these applications is still in its early stages.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the unclear mechanisms behind abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) by analyzing gut microbiota in fecal samples from patients with AAA and healthy controls.
  • It was found that patients with AAA had higher levels of certain oral bacteria and lower levels of bacterial genes associated with alpha lipoic acid (ALA) biosynthesis in their feces.
  • These findings suggest potential for developing gut microbiome-based treatments for AAA, highlighting the role of gut bacteria in the condition's pathophysiology.

United States (US) background ozone (O) is the counterfactual O that would exist with zero US anthropogenic emissions. Estimates of US background O typically come from chemical transport models (CTMs), but different models vary in their estimates of both background and total O. Here, a measurement-model data fusion approach is used to estimate CTM biases in US anthropogenic O and multiple US background O sources, including natural emissions, long-range international emissions, short-range international emissions from Canada and Mexico, and stratospheric O.

The recent prevalence of publicly accessible, large medical imaging datasets has led to a proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) models for cardiovascular image classification and analysis. At the same time, the potentially significant impacts of these models have motivated the development of a range of explainable AI (XAI) methods that aim to explain model predictions given certain image inputs. However, many of these methods are not developed or evaluated with domain experts, and explanations are not contextualized in terms of medical expertise or domain knowledge.

Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) hold great promise for regenerative medicine thanks to their ability to self-renew and differentiate into somatic cells and the germline. ESCs correspond to pluripotent epiblast - the tissue from which the following three germ layers originate during embryonic gastrulation: the ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. Importantly, ESCs can be induced to differentiate toward various cell types by varying culture conditions, which can be exploited for modeling of developmental processes such as gastrulation.

Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo Departamento de Morfologia VitóriaES Brasil Departamento de Morfologia, Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, Vitória, ES, Brasil.

Tributyltin (TBT) is an organotin compound and a common persistent environmental pollutant with endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) actions. It can accumulate in the environment at various concentrations throughout the food chain in the ecosystem, posing a risk to human health, especially during critical periods such as gestation and fetal and offspring development. In this review, we report the results of studies describing the consequences of TBT exposure on placental and reproductive parameters in offspring of both sexes.

How digital paywalls shape news coverage.

PNAS Nexus

January 2025

School of Information, University of Michigan, 500 S. State Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48109, USA.

The internet has significantly transformed how news is produced, consumed, and distributed. As a result, the news industry has transitioned from ad-supported to subscription-based models regulated by digital paywalls. In the light of this disruption, it is crucial to investigate not only how news consumers adapt to this change but also how economic incentives shape content coverage.

Objective: Myopia prevalence is increasing at alarming rates, yet the underlying mechanistic causes are not understood. Several studies have employed experimental animal models of myopia and transcriptome profiling to identify genes and pathways contributing to myopia. In this study, we determined the retinal transcriptome changes in response to form deprivation in mouse retinas.

Mechanofluorochromic (MFC) materials are emerging as a versatile candidate for optoelectronic and biomedical applications. In the present work, we designed and synthesized four MFC materials, namely BT-PTZ-1, BT-PTZ-2, BT-PTZO-1, and BT-PTZO-2, using Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. These materials possess benzothiazole (BT) as an acceptor moiety and different donors, including phenothiazine (PTZ) and triphenylamine (TPA), with variations in their spacer units.

In-situ Polymerization Induced Seed-Root Anchoring Structure for Enhancing Stability and Efficiency in Perovskite Solar Modules.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2025

Southern University of Science and Technology, Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering, 1088 Xueyuan Blvd, Nanshan District, 518055, Shenzhen, CHINA.

The escape of organic cations over time from defective perovskite interface leads to non-stoichiometric terminals, significantly affecting the stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). How to stabilize the interface composition under environmental stress remains a grand challenge. To address this issue, we utilize thiol-functionalized particles as a "seed" and conduct in situ polymerization of 2,2,3,4,4,4-hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFMA) as a "root" at the bottom of the perovskite layer.

Background: Dobutamine is used to treat hypotension in isoflurane-anaesthetised horses but may produce arrhythmias. Halothane is a volatile anaesthetic that was, historically, widely used in horses, but in one study, 56 of 200 halothane-anaesthetised horses (28%) developed arrhythmias after dobutamine administration. Although isoflurane has largely replaced halothane, it is unknown how isoflurane and dobutamine interact in the development of arrhythmias.

The Janus kinase inhibitor tofacitinib (TOF) is an FDA-approved drug for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatment, but its long-term oral use leads to significant systemic side effects. The present research aimed to conquer these challenges by formulating hyaluronic-acid-coated transethosomes (HA-TOF-TE), a novel system for targeted, topical delivery of TOF to reduce systemic toxicity and improve therapeutic efficacy. Transethosomes were synthesized via the cold sonication technique with HA functionalization enabling CD44 receptor-mediated targeting of inflamed synovial tissue.

Objective: Early diagnosis of primary and metastatic lung nodules is critical for effective therapeutic planning. Manual delineation of lung nodules is not time-efficient and is prone to human error as well as interobserver and intraobserver variability. This study aimed to address the unmet need for an open-source computer-aided detection (CAD) system for 3D segmentation of lung and metastatic lung nodules along with radiomic feature extraction.

Optical characterization of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) freshly collected from the circumneutral "white water" of the Rio Solimoes revealed that it had lower aromaticity, lower molecular weight, and a greater autochthonous content than DOC from the acidic "black water" of the Rio Negro. The tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), a characid member of the Serrasalmidae, is a model neotropical fish that migrates annually between the two rivers. We analysed ionoregulatory responses of the tambaqui over 24 h in ion-poor water at pH 7.

The lymphatic system plays complex, often contradictory, roles in many cancers, including melanoma; these roles include contributions to tumor cell metastasis and immunosuppression in the tumor microenvironment as well as generation of antitumor immunity. Advancing our understanding of lymphatic vessel involvement in regulating tumor growth and immune response may provide new therapeutic targets or treatment plans to enhance the efficacy of existing therapies. We utilized a syngeneic murine melanoma model in which we surgically disrupted the lymphatic vessel network draining from the tumor to the tumor-draining lymph node (TDLN) while leaving the TDLN intact.
