Coagulation abnormalities following brown recluse spider (Loxosceles reclusa) envenomation: A description of 2 cases and review of the literature.

Objective: Hemostatic abnormalities, including disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), are often cited as a common finding in patients following Loxosceles spider envenomation (ie, loxoscelism). The prevalence and severity of coagulopathy, however, particularly following L reclusa (ie, brown recluse) envenomation, is not well described. This study aimed to characterize coagulation laboratory parameters and coagulopathy in patients following L reclusa envenomation.

Existing risk models developed for deceased-donor LT depend on posttransplant factors and fall short in living-donor LT (LDLT), where pretransplant evaluations are crucial for preventing EAD and justifying the donor's risks.

Methods: This retrospective study analyzed data from 2944 adult patients who underwent LDLT at 17 centers between 2016 and 2020.

Materials and Methods This secondary analysis of an ongoing prospective trial (Chinese Clinical Trial Registry: ChiCTR1900024094) included consecutive participants with HCM without atrial fibrillation (AF) who underwent cardiac MRI from January 2012 to December 2020. The LA fast long-axis strain was obtained by semiautomatically tracking the distance between the atrioventricular junction and the midposterior LA wall.

In the field of organ transplantation, the accurate assessment of donor organ quality is necessary to efficient organ allocation and to informed consent for recipients. A common approach to organ quality assessment is the development of statistical models that accurately predict post-transplant survival by integrating multiple characteristics of the donor and allograft. Despite the proliferation of predictive models across many domains of medicine, many physicians may have limited familiarity with how these models are built, the assessment of how well models function in their population and the risks of a poorly performing model.

Peripheral Neuropathy in Systemic Sclerosis with Proximal Nerve Involvement: Diagnostic Challenges and Response to Corticosteroid Therapy.

Peripheral neuropathy is a complication in systemic sclerosis that is occasionally encountered in clinical settings. The mechanisms underlying this condition remain unclear and treatment strategies have not yet been established, making management challenging. Here, we report a case of peripheral neuropathy associated with systemic sclerosis that was successfully treated with corticosteroid therapy despite the absence of conventional inflammatory findings on histopathology or blood tests.

Sotalol poisoning and its unique treatment considerations compared with traditional therapies for beta-adrenoceptor blocking drug poisoning.

Introduction: Sotalol is a beta-adrenoceptor blocking drug with unique physical and pharmacologic properties. Unlike most beta-adrenoceptor blocking drugs, sotalol is amenable to extracorporeal removal and causes QT interval prolongation and ventricular dysrhythmias. These properties have implications for treating sotalol poisoning.
