July 2015

'Aghia Sophia' Children's Hospital, Department of Infectious Diseases, Athens University Medical School, Thivon & Levadias Str., 115 27 Athens, Greece. Electronic address:

We have previously shown that multiple vaccinations with 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23s) resulted in attenuated antibody responses to subsequent 7-valent conjugate vaccine (PCV7) in asplenic adults with β-thalassemia major (Orthopoulos et al. Vaccine 2009; 27:350). However, there is evidence that PPV23-induced immune hyporesponsiveness could be overcome with time (Papadatou et al.

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in HIV infection and disease.

Endocrinol Metab Clin North Am

September 2014

First Endocrine Department and Diabetes Center, Alexandra Hospital, 80 Vassilisis Sofias Avenue, Athens 11528, Greece. Electronic address:

HIV infection induces hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis derangements. Partial glucocorticoid resistance has been observed in a subset of AIDS patients, possibly owing to HIV-induced altered cytokine secretion and action. Because glucocorticoids have immunomodulatory effects, the severity of the HPA axis disorder could play a central role in disease progression.

New use for old drugs? Prospective targets of chloroquines in cancer therapy.

Curr Drug Targets

April 2015

Horemio Research Institute, First Department of Pediatrics, University of Athens Medical School, "Aghia Sophia" Children's Hospital, Thivon & Levadias, 11527 Goudi, Athens, Greece.

During the last decade research is gradually repositioning the antimalarial drug chloroquine, and certain related quinoline derivatives, as anticancer agents. Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, in particular, have relatively well-characterized toxicity profiles due to several decades of use for treatment of malaria. Previously published review articles provide an excellent overview of the diversity of chloroquine effects on cancer cells, both in the cell culture as well as on human tumors grafted into mice; and an account of the increasing pace of incorporation of hydroxychloroquine in combination treatment schemes for clinical studies.

An 8-week stress management program in pathological gamblers: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

J Psychiatr Res

September 2014

Postgraduate Course Stress Management and Health Promotion, School of Medicine, University of Athens, Soranou Ephessiou Str., 4, GR-115-27 Athens, Greece.

Stress plays a major role at the onset and relapse of pathological gambling (PG), but at the same time it can also be the aftermath of gambling behavior, thus revealing a reciprocal relationship. Although the role of stress has been well-documented, there is a paucity of studies investigating the effect of an adjunctive stress management program on PG. In this 8-week parallel randomized waitlist controlled trial pathological gamblers, already in the gamblers anonymous (GA) group, were assigned randomly in two groups, with the intervention group (n = 22) receiving an additional stress management program (consisting of education on diet and exercise, stress coping methods, relaxation breathing -RB- and progressive muscle relaxation -PMR).

MYCN is a well-known oncogene overexpressed in different human malignancies including neuroblastoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, medulloblastoma, astrocytoma, Wilms' tumor, and small cell lung cancer. While neuroblastoma is one of the most common childhood malignancies, in adults it is extremely rare and its treatment is based on pediatric protocols that take into consideration stage and genotypic features, such as MYCN amplification. Although neuroblastoma therapy has evolved, identification of early stage patients who need chemotherapy continues to pose a therapeutic challenge.

Recurrent chromosomal alterations have been repeatedly reported in cultured human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). The effects of these alterations on the capability of pluripotent cells to differentiate and on growth potential of their specific differentiated derivatives remain unclear. Here, we report that the hESC lines HUES-7 and -9 carrying multiple chromosomal alterations produce in vitro mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) that show progressive growth arrest and enter senescence after 15 and 16 passages, respectively.
