Background: Glucocorticoids play an essential part in anti-leukemic therapies, but resistance is a crucial event for the prognosis of the disease. Glucocorticoids influence the metabolic properties of leukemic cells. The inherent plasticity of clinically evolving cancer cells justifies the characterization of drug-induced early oncogenic pathways, which represent a likely source of detrimental secondary effects.

Nutritional risk screening (NRS) is not yet established in many clinical settings. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of two NRS tools; the Paediatric Yorkhill Malnutrition Score (PYMS) and the Screening Tool for the Assessment of Malnutrition in Paediatrics (STAMP), compared to the global dietitians' clinical judgment. The goal of this study was also to estimate the prevalence of nutritional risk in Greek paediatric patients.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines the dietary habits and nutrient intake of pregnant women from Croatia, Greece, Italy, and Slovenia, highlighting a lack of detailed research on nutrition's importance for maternal and fetal health.
  • Using a food frequency questionnaire, researchers analyzed data from 1,436 women, finding that most exceeded recommended limits for sugars and total fat, while also facing risks of deficiencies in key micronutrients like iron, folate, and vitamin D.
  • The findings suggest that consistent nutritional guidelines at national and European levels are crucial for enhancing maternal health during pregnancy.

The Potential Role of Exosomes in Child and Adolescent Obesity.

Children (Basel)

March 2021

University Research Institute of Maternal and Child Health and Precision Medicine, UNESCO Chair on Adolescent Health Care, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, 8 Livadias Street, Goudi, 11527 Athens, Greece.

Child and adolescent obesity constitute one of the greatest contemporary public health menaces. The enduring disproportion between calorie intake and energy consumption, determined by a complex interaction of genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors, finally leads to the development of overweight and obesity. Child and adolescent overweight/obesity promotes smoldering systemic inflammation ("para-inflammation") and increases the likelihood of later metabolic and cardiovascular complications, including metabolic syndrome and its components, which progressively deteriorate during adulthood.

Background: Although fibrosis is the main determinant of liver stiffness, other disease-related factors usually disregarded in studies on liver elastography, such as inflammation and cholestasis, may influence liver stiffness.

Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of two-dimensional (2-D) shear wave elastography in assessing liver fibrosis in children with chronic liver disease by controlling for the confounding role of several disease- and patient-related factors.

Materials And Methods: Three disease groups were studied: 1) various chronic liver diseases, 2) autoimmune hepatitis and 3) biliary atresia.

Primary neuroendocrine carcinomas of the salivary glands are very rare neoplasms that present light microscopic, ultrastructural, and immunohistochemical features of neuroendocrine differentiation. Twelve cases have been published in the English language literature. We describe the pathologic features of a case of primary large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the parotid gland in a 91-year old male and summarize the immunophenotype of previously reported LCNECs of the major salivary glands.
