Turkish Society of Gastroenterology: Pancreas Working Group, Acute Pancreatitis Committee Consensus Report.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a clinical condition that arises acutely in the pancreas through various inflammatory pathways due to multiple causes. Turkish Society of Gastroenterology Pancreas Working Group developed comprehensive guidance statements regarding the management of AP that include its epidemiology, etiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic criteria, disease severity, treatment, prognosis, local and systemic complications. The statements were developed through literature review, deliberation, and consensus opinion.

Definition of a measurement technique for hexapod circular smart fixators' perioperative assembly parameters and investigation of alignment and correlation with postoperative measurements: a retrospective cohort study.

Background: With the assistance of smart fixator technologies, the correction of complex deformities has been facilitated; however, the accurate integration of specialized radiographs and measurements into the system remains the greatest disadvantage, necessitating specialized imaging and an experienced team. When inexperienced technicians and doctors perform these specialized postoperative radiographs, excessive exposure of the patient and team to radioactive rays exacerbates inadequacies in measurements and delays the correction of residual deformities due to angular and translational adjustments. In this study, we compared postoperative measurements with those taken peroperatively via fluoroscopy, hypothesizing that it reduces the exposure of the patient and team to radioactive rays, allows for more accurate and timely correction of deformities and assembly parameters, and reduces time and costs.

Background: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2 virus) has been a major cause of significant morbidity and mortality. Acute kidney injury (AKI) has been seen in COVID-19-infected subjects, and it has frequently resulted in an abnormal estimated glomerular filtration rate. Colchicine, an immunomodulatory drug, was used in several studies in the early stages of the pandemic.

The Effect of Mobile Application Follow-Up on Treatment Compliance and Self-Care Management in Patients With Hypertension: Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Hypertension (HT) is a global health problem. Although there are effective treatment protocols, patients have difficulty in adapting to regular use of drugs, diet, and lifestyle changes. Mobile apps can be a potential alternative for managing HT and improving self-care behavior.

What do medical faculty students think about telehealth?

Objective: We aimed to evaluate medical school students' knowledge and approaches regarding telehealth.

Method: In this descriptive study, an electronic survey was conducted among students attending the Faculties of Medicine at Health Sciences University. The first part of the Form included questions evaluating individual characteristics and telehealth approaches, and the second part included opinions and suggestions regarding telehealth usage topics.

Clinical and Demographic Characteristics of Treatment Requiring Retinopathy of Prematurity in Big Premature Infants in Turkiye: Report No. 1 (BIG-ROP Study).

Introduction: The aim of the study was to analyse the clinical and demographic features of infants with gestational age (GA) of 32-37 weeks and birth weight (BW) of >1,500 g who developed treatment requiring retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).

Methods: Data on the infants with a GA of 32-37 weeks and BW >1,500 g who developed treatment requiring ROP (TR-ROP) were collected retrospectively from the 33 ROP centres in Turkiye. GA, BW, type of hospital, neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) level, presence of an ophthalmologist and neonatologist in the same hospital, length of stay in NICU, duration of oxygen therapy, comorbidities, type of ROP, and timing for TR-ROP development were analysed.

Evaluation of the Atherogenic Index of Plasma to Predict All-Cause Mortality in Elderly With Acute Coronary Syndrome: A Long-Term Follow-Up.

The Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP) is associated with coronary artery disease (CAD) and acute coronary syndrome (ACS), but the relationship between AIP and ACS in elderly patients remains unclear. We investigated the prognostic capability of AIP for in-hospital and long-term mortality in elderly patients with ACS undergoing coronary angiography (CA). We analyzed 627 patients with ACS over 75 years of age who were admitted to our clinic between April 2015 and December 2022 and underwent CA.

Carotid artery stenting in unfavorable vascular anatomy: Effect of embolic protection filter use on periprocedural complications.

Objective: To investigate the effect of embolic protection device (EPD) use on periprocedural complications in patients with carotid artery stenosis with anatomical variations.

Method: The study retrospectively evaluated 185 patients who consecutively underwent carotid artery stenting between November 2020 and December 2023. Forty-four patients with difficult anatomical structures, anatomical variations in the common carotid artery (CCA) and internal carotid artery (ICA) (tortuosity, kinking, or coiling), and a CCA-ICA angle of >60 degrees were included in the sample.

Liver Fatty Acid-binding Protein Is a More Reliable Biomarker for Liver Injury in Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis than Other Etiologies of Hepatitis.

Background/aims:  Liver fatty acid-binding protein (LFABP) controls hepatocyte lipid metabolism and can be a biomarker in liver diseases. We compared the correlation of LFABP levels with liver histology in viral hepatitis and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and investigated the utility of serum LFABP as a biomarker for liver damage.

Materials And Methods:  We included 142 patients (60 chronic viral hepatitis B [CHB], 35 chronic viral hepatitis C [CHC], 47 NAFLD) and 40 healthy controls.

Exploring the association of hyperhomocysteinemia with early pregnancy losses: A retrospective case-control study in a tertiary clinic in Türkiye.

A disturbance in the metabolism of homocysteine in both the mother and the fetus has been implicated in several placental vasculopathy-related disorders, including pregnancy loss. This study aimed to provide insights into the potential role of homocysteine, Vitamin B12, and folic acid in early pregnancy losses, with a specific focus on the Turkish population. The results of 93 pregnant women who experienced miscarriage between 5 and 14 gestational weeks and 93 healthy pregnant women at the same gestational weeks were compared.

The effect of phototherapy treatment on serum melatonin levels in term newborns.

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of phototherapy treatment on serum melatonin levels in term newborn infants.

Material And Methods: This study was planned as a single-center, prospective, observational, case-control study. Term infants (gestation week ≥37 weeks) who received at least 6 h of phototherapy due to jaundice constitute the phototherapy group, while the term infants without jaundice and who were exclusively breastfed constitute the control group.

Can Hounsfield unit density value accurately predict prelaryngeal invasion in laryngeal carcinoma cases.

Objective: The Hounsfield unit density value (HUDV) is a relative quantitative measurement of radio density used by radiologists in the interpretation of computed tomography (CT) images. Our aim is to investigate the role of HUDV in evaluating pre-epiglottic space (PES) involvement of laryngeal carcinoma.

Methods: Seventy-four patients treated for laryngeal carcinoma in our clinic between 2014 and 2019 were included in the study.

The Relationship between Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratios with Nutritional Status, Risk of Nutritional Indices, Prognostic Nutritional Indices and Morbidity in Patients with Ischemic Stroke.

In recent years, whole blood parameters and derivatives have been used as prognostic criteria in the course of various diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between parameters such as the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), the prognostic nutritional index (PNI), controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score, nutritional risk index (NRI) and immunonutrition status and disease activity in patients with ischemic stroke of the small-vessel, large-vessel and other etiologies. We retrospectively evaluated the records of 1454 consecutive ischemic stroke patients hospitalized in the emergency department of Gaziosmanpasa Education and Research Hospital from 2019 to 2023.

Effects of submucoperichondrial application of platelet-rich plasma on nasal mucosal healing after septoplasty.

Objective(s): Our aim is to investigate the effects of the submucoperichondrial application of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) on nasal mucosal healing after septoplasty surgery.

Method(s): This prospective randomized observational study was conducted between July 2019 and February 2021, with 40 patients aged 18-60 years who underwent closed the only septoplasty operation for similar septal deviations. Patient divided into two group; 21 patients were placed in PRP group to which PRP was applied on all mucosal surface and submucoperichondrial area of septum and 19 patients were placed in control group to which saline solution was applied on same regions.

Objective: To compare the frequency and distribution of healthcare-associated infections (HAI) in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) during COVID-19 infection.

Methods: We compared all cases hospitalized in the NICU and diagnosed with HAIs between 1 March - 1 September 2019 (pre-COVID-19 pandemic) and 1 March - 1 September 2020 (during the COVID-19 pandemic).

Results: We evaluated a total of 957 babies, 427 babies in the pre-COVID-19 period and 530 babies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Neurological Disorders and Women's Health: Contribution of Molecular Neuroimaging Techniques.

Sex differences in brain physiology and the mechanisms of drug action have been extensively reported. These biological variances, from structure to hormonal and genetic aspects, can profoundly influence healthy functioning and disease mechanisms and might have implications for treatment and drug development. Molecular neuroimaging techniques may help to disclose sex's impact on brain functioning, as well as the neuropathological changes underpinning several diseases.

Feasibility and accuracy of targeted axillary dissection in breast cancer patients; single center experience.

Introduction: Axillary complete response (pCR) was observed in approximately half of breast cancer patients who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) due to axillary positivity. Preventing axillary morbidity due to unnecessary axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) is extremely important for patients' quality of life. Targeted axillary dissection (TAD) is a technique developed to improve axillary staging and reduce the false negative rate in sentinel lymph node biopsy.

The effect of eccentric glenoid reaming in reverse shoulder artrhoplasty for glenohumeral osteoarthritis.

Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate the abilitiy of eccentric reaming in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RSA), in patients with glenohumeral osteoarthritis (GHOA), to correct preoperative glenoid retroversion and to compare with cuff tear arthopaty (CTA) cases.

Methods: Fifty-nine patients who underwent RSA with GHOA or CTA diagnosis between 2013 and 2022 and who had pre- and postoperative computed tomography scans were included in the study. Preoperative glenoid version and postoperative glenoid component versions of 17 patients with GHOA and 40 patients with CTA were measured by Friedman method.
