I saw the "sea anemone" sign: Puffy face of borderline ovarian tumors.

Clin Imaging

July 2024

Department of Radiology, Izmir Faculty of Medicine, University of Health Sciences; Department of Radiology, Izmir City Hospital, Izmir Provincial Health Directorate.

The sea anemone sign is a radiologic sign seen on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies that indicates the morphological development of serous borderline ovarian tumors (SBOTs), as papillary projections originating from the wall of the cystic lesion. The presence of T2 hypointense fibrous stroma in the center of the papilla is a helpful tip in the diagnosis of SBOTs. Those projections might also be assumed to have a frond-like appearance which can be seen as branching papillary projections, especially on T2-weighted imaging.

Aim: This study aimed to demonstrate the role of Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) in papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTC) developing on the background of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT).

Methods: The presence of EBV in tumoral tissue, lymphocytes, and peritumoral normal thyroid tissue was investigated using the in situ hybridization method in paraffin blocks. The subtypes of PTC, tumor diameter, TNM stage, multifocality, invasion of thyroid capsule, perineural invasion, and muscular tissue invasion were identified and compared according to EBV involvement.

Introduction: Personalized management strategies are pivotal in addressing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This multicenter randomized controlled trial focuses on comparing the efficacy of a microbiome-based artificial intelligence-assisted personalized diet (PD) with a low-fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols diet (FODMAP) for IBS management.

Methods: One hundred twenty-one patients participated, with 70 assigned to the PD group and 51 to the FODMAP diet group.

The identification of mitotic figures is essential for the diagnosis, grading, and classification of various different tumors. Despite its importance, there is a paucity of literature reporting the consistency in interpreting mitotic figures among pathologists. This study leverages publicly accessible datasets and social media to recruit an international group of pathologists to score an image database of more than 1000 mitotic figures collectively.

Background: Multiple drug-delivery systems obtained by loading nanoparticles (NPs) with different drugs that have different physicochemical properties present a promising strategy to achieve synergistic effects between drugs or overcome undesired effects. This study aims to develop a new NP by loading quercetin (Que) and valproic acid (VPA) into chitosan. In this context, our study investigated the antioxidant activities of chitosan NPs loaded with single and dual drugs containing Que against oxidative stress.

  • Fabry disease (FD) presents diverse symptoms, causing diagnostic delays that can lead to severe health issues like kidney failure and strokes; this highlights the need for better screening methods.* -
  • In a study involving 280 individuals from two families, 131 underwent genetic testing, resulting in 45 diagnoses, demonstrating a 1:15 diagnostic ratio and an average diagnosis age of about 31 years.* -
  • The study noted significant consanguineous marriages in the families, suggesting that cascade screening is particularly useful in areas with high rates of such marriages to effectively identify individuals at risk for FD.*

Article Synopsis
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a leading sexually transmitted virus, and this study investigates the effectiveness of two sampling methods—cotton swabs (CS) versus nylon-flocked swabs (NFS)—for HPV-DNA testing in men with genital warts.
  • The research involved 45 men, and results showed that NFS detected significantly more HPV types, including high-risk variants, compared to CS, with NFS identifying 106 HPV types overall versus 84 types for CS.
  • The findings suggest that NFS are more reliable for HPV-DNA testing in this demographic, highlighting their superior capability in detecting multiple HPV infections and more high-risk strains, recommending their use over CS for better HPV detection.
