Objective: To identify prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal risk factors for dialysis within the first year of life in children with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) as a basis for parental counseling after prenatal and perinatal diagnosis.

Study Design: A dataset comprising 385 patients from the ARegPKD international registry study was analyzed for potential risk markers for dialysis during the first year of life.

Results: Thirty-six out of 385 children (9.

April 2018

Clinica Pediatrica e Reumatologia, Paediatric Rheumatology International Trials Organisation (PRINTO), Istituto Giannina Gaslini, Via Gaslini 5, 16147, Genova, Italy.

The Juvenile Arthritis Multidimensional Assessment Report (JAMAR) is a new parent/patient reported outcome measure that enables a thorough assessment of the disease status in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). We report the results of the cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the parent and patient versions of the JAMAR in the Turkish language. The reading comprehension of the questionnaire was tested in 10 JIA parents and patients.

Background: The repair of difficult abdominal wall defects (AWDs) continues to be a crucial and demanding issue for surgeons. This study aimed to present the risk factors and the long-term results of usage of an expanded-polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) synthetic mesh for the AWR of difficult abdominal wall defects.

Methods: This study included 156 adult patients who underwent difficult AWR with e-PTFE mesh for incisional hernia, ventral hernia, and created AWDs of various etiopathologies.

Purpose: -related hypotrichosis with juvenile macular dystrophy (HJMD) is an autosomal-recessive entity characterized by congenital sparse scalp hair and macular dystrophy, leading to severe central visual loss. We report a family with HJMD caused by a novel gene mutation and review the mutation spectrum in HJMD. A detailed phenotypic assessment for patients whose molecular results were reported previously is also summarized.

Background: Turkish health reforms began in 2003 and brought some significant changes in primary care services. Few studies in Turkey compare the shift from health centres (HC) to family physicians (FP) approach, which was initiated by reforms.

Objectives: This study compares health status indicators during the HC period before reforms (2003-2007) and the FP period after reforms (2008-2012) in Turkey.

Introduction: Measurement of serum digoxin concentrations before steady-state is reached results in a falsely low concentration, and may affect treatment safety. We evaluated the proportion of serum digoxin measurements performed before steady-state is reached and the reasons for inappropriate sampling in hospitalized patients.

Materials And Methods: Electronic medical records of patients hospitalized between January 2011 and December 2015 treated with oral digoxin, that had more than one digoxin measurement were included.

Introduction: Patient examinations performed in a limited time period may lead to impairment in patient and physician relationship, defective and erroneous diagnosis, inappropriate prescriptions, less common use of preventive medicine practices, poor patient satisfaction, and increased violent acts against health-care staff.

Objective: This study aimed to determine the appropriate minimal duration of patient examination in the pulmonary practice.

Methods: A total of 49 researchers from ten different study groups of the Turkish Thoracic Society participated in the study.

Objectives: Although cause-of-death analyses are very important to define public health policy priorities and to evaluate health programs, there is very limited knowledge about mortality profiles and trends in Turkey. The aim of this study was to measure the trends in mortality within three broad cause-of-death groups and their distribution by age groups and gender and to describe the changes of leading causes of death between 1980 and 2013 in Turkey.

Study Design: Descriptive study.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is an important neurotrophin in the brain that modulates dopaminergic neurons. In this study, we aimed to investigate the changes in serum BDNF levels of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in response to OROS methylphenidate treatment. We also aimed to determine whether there were any pre-post-differences between ADHD subtypes and comorbid psychiatric disorders in serum BDNF levels.

Localization of the Werner Protein Together with H2AX in γ-Irradiation-Induced Neoplastic Transformed Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells.

Crit Rev Eukaryot Gene Expr

September 2017

Near East University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medical Genetics, Near East Avenue, Nicosia 99138, Northern Cyprus.

The H2A histone family, member X (H2AX), and Werner (WRN) are important proteins for genome and telomere maintenance. WRN has a major role in genome stability, particularly during DNA replication, transcription, recombination, and repair of DNA double-stranded breaks (DSBs) via base excision repair, homologous recombination, or nonhomologous end joining. H2AX plays a part in the rapid, sensitive, cellular response to the ionizing radiation or DNA-damaging chemotherapeutic agents that cause DSBs.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy of locally applied insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) on the recovery of facial nerve functions after crush injury in a rabbit model.

Methods: The rabbits were randomly assigned into three groups. Group 1 consisted of the rabbits with crush injury alone; group 2, the animals applied saline solution onto the crushed facial nerve and group 3, IGF-1 implemented to the nerve in the same manner.

Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the analytical performance characteristics of the two creatinine methods based on the Jaffe and enzymatic methods.

Methods: Two original creatinine methods, Jaffe and enzymatic, were evaluated on Architect c16000 automated analyzer via limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ), linearity, intra-assay and inter-assay precision, and comparability in serum and urine samples. The method comparison and bias estimation using patient samples according to CLSI guideline were performed on 230 serum and 141 urine samples by analyzing on the same auto-analyzer.

We aimed to reveal the correlation of NLR rate, RDW and MPV values and with the findings of PET/CT regarding the prediction of disease progression and the clinical characteristics. The treatment naive sarcoidosis cases, of whose PET/CT have been taken due to mediastinal lymphadenopathy of whose diagnosis have been confirmed by biopsy, were included in the study. Hematological parameters, clinical, radiological and PET/CT findings are evaluated.

Introduction: Many extrathoracic malignancies can metastasize to lungs and mediastinal lymph nodes. Whether mediastinal lesions are metastasis in these patients changes staging, prognosis, and treatment strategy. In this study, we aimed to find out the contribution of EBUS-TBNA to the diagnosis in cases with extrathoracic malignancy.

Could "red cell distribution width" predict COPD severity?

Rev Port Pneumol (2006)

December 2017

Dokuz Eylul University Medical Faculty, Department of Pulmonary Diseases, Balcova, Izmir, Turkey. Electronic address:

Background And Objectives: Erythrocyte morphology changes not only by primary hematological diseases but also by systemic inflammation, ineffective erythropoiesis and nutritional deficiencies. Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a parameter reflecting erythrocyte morphology. We aimed to investigate the relationship of RDW with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) stages, BODE index and survival in COPD patients.

Background: Uroepithelial molecules like uroplakins are involved both in the development of urinary tract and in colonization, attachment and invasion of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). Uroplakin disorders are also associated with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). We hypothesized that urine contents, as well as urinary flow, may be altered in VUR, and aimed to determine whether in vitro UPEC growth is increased in urine from the refluxing systems.
