Background: Progress in the nursing profession and clinical decision-making are largely sustained by the coherence between theory and practice. The quality of healthcare provided by nurses and patient outcomes are adversely impacted by the gap between knowledge and practice. Measurement tools used to assess nurses' perceptions of this gap are inadequate in Türkiye.

Background: Increasing evidence suggests that people with chronic neck pain (CNP) may display altered biomechanics beyond the cervical spine. However, whether spinal alignment and mobility are associated with neck pain is not clarified.

Objectives: To investigate whether there is a significant association between neck pain intensity and sagittal spinal alignment and mobility in people with CNP, and to examine whether sagittal spinal alignment and mobility differ according to pain intensity.

Article Synopsis
  • Proximal femoral nailing (PFN) is beneficial for treating intertrochanteric fractures but poses higher complication risks, especially in obese patients due to issues like poor technique and incorrect entry points.
  • A study compared the outcomes of using an oriented flexible reamer versus a rigid reamer in PFN procedures on patients aged 65 and older, focusing on factors such as reduction quality and complication rates over a year of follow-up.
  • Results indicated that patients treated with the flexible reamer had better outcomes, including a more favorable femoral neck-shaft angle, improved reduction quality, and a lower rate of complications compared to those treated with the rigid reamer.

tVNS alters inflammatory response in adult VPA-induced mouse model of autism: evidence for sexual dimorphism.

FEBS Open Bio

January 2025

Department of Neurology and Algology, Neuropsychiatry Education, Research and Application Center (NPM), Neuroscience and Neurotechnology Center of Excellence NÖROM, Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder with limited treatment alternatives and which incidence is increasing. Some research suggests that vagus nerve simulation might lead to the reduction of certain symptom. Therefore, we aimed to examine the effect of bilateral transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) on the inflammatory response in an adult valproic acid (VPA) induced mouse (C57BL6) model of autism for the first time.

Glyphosate impairs both structure and function of GABAergic synapses in hippocampal neurons.

Neuropharmacology

January 2025

(")Rita Levi-Montalcini" Department of Neuroscience, University of Turin, Turin, Italy. Electronic address:

Glyphosate (Gly) is a broad-spectrum herbicide responsible for the inhibition of the enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase known to be expressed exclusively in plants and not in animals. For decades Gly has been thought to be ineffective in mammals, including humans, until it was demonstrated that rodents treated with the Gly-based herbicide Roundup showed reduced content of neurotransmitters (e.g.

Article Synopsis
  • Distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability is a common issue after injuries, causing chronic pain and limited function, and current single suture button treatments are often inadequate.
  • This study tested whether a double suture button technique could offer better stability than single constructs for DRUJ instability using cadaver models.
  • Results showed the double suture button significantly reduced movement and restored stability across various positions, outperforming the single construct methods.*

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates what patients consider acceptable strength after undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) for tears involving the subscapularis muscle, focusing on the Patient Acceptable Symptom State (PASS) values for strength metrics.
  • A total of 278 patients were analyzed over a mean follow-up period of 72.8 months, revealing specific PASS values for both Constant strength and internal rotation (IR) strength based on gender.
  • Findings indicate that older age, fatty infiltration of tendons, and unsuccessful healing of the subscapularis negatively impact the likelihood of achieving satisfactory strength post-surgery.

  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) using indocyanine green (ICG) shows promise for cancer treatment, producing reactive oxygen species when photo-irradiated with a laser.
  • Mice with grown MCF-7 tumors were treated with ICG and various laser powers, with tumor size measured for four days, revealing overall tumor reduction except for the low power and long wait group.
  • FTIR spectroscopy highlighted molecular changes in tumor tissues, suggesting that a laser power output of 250 mW led to significant decreases in tumor volume and is recommended for further studies.

The Role of Thalidomide and Its Analogs in the Treatment of Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia: A Systematic Review.

J Clin Med

September 2024

Division of Hematology, Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Trakya University, 22030 Edirne, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a genetic condition characterized by irregular blood vessel formations that can lead to excessive bleeding, and treatments using antiangiogenic and immunomodulatory drugs like thalidomide show promise in managing the disease.
  • A systematic review evaluated 53 articles, ultimately including 15 studies on thalidomide, which was found to be effective in reducing symptoms like bleeding, but with a high adverse event rate of up to 85%.
  • While lenalidomide and pomalidomide were explored with some success, more research is needed to determine the best treatment approach regarding timing, dosage, and overall therapy strategies for HHT.

This study investigates the structural and photoluminescence (PL) characteristics of Tb-incorporated KY(BO) (KYBO) phosphors synthesized via a microwave-assisted sol-gel technique. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld refinement confirmed the formation of a pure hexagonal phase, with lattice expansion due to Tb³⁺ doping. PL studies revealed strong green emissions centered at 541 nm, attributed to the ⁵D₄ → ⁷F₅ transitions of Tb³⁺ ions, with the highest intensity observed at 5 wt% Tb³⁺.
