Greater tuberosity medial malposition: does it affect shoulder abductor moment?

Int Orthop

January 2024

Orthopaedics and Traumatology Department, Giresun University Faculty of Medicine, Gazipaşa Yerleşkesi Debboy Mevkii P.K.:28200 Merkez, Giresun, Turkey.

Purpose: The detrimental effect of greater tuberosity malposition on functional scores is well known. Superior or posterior malpositions exceeding five mm lead to excessive loading on the deltoid strength. However, the significance of situations where greater tuberosity becomes medialized due to the compressive effect of the locking plate fixation, especially in fractures with metaphyseal dead space, has not been emphasized.

Background: Pain and fear associated with insulin injections can cause children with type 1 diabetes mellitus to avoid insulin injections and skip doses.

Objective: To evaluate and compare pain and fear levels in children aged 6-12 years receiving subcutaneous insulin injection using the manual pressure and ShotBlocker methods.

Methods: A randomized controlled study was conducted with 90 children with type 1 diabetes who were allocated using block randomization to the manual pressure, ShotBlocker, and control groups (n = 30 in each group).

Background: To compare ocular findings of acromegaly patients with healthy individuals and investigate the relation of serum levels of insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) along with growth hormone (GH) and pituitary tumor (adenoma) dimensions (TD) with specific ocular parameters.

Methods: The ocular parameters of acromegaly patients (n = 38) were compared with those of healthy subjects (n = 36). These parameters were intraocular pressure, keratometric (K1-K2) values, central corneal thickness (CCT), total axial length along with anterior chamber-lens-vitreous length, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, central foveal thickness (CFT), choroidal thickness (CT), ganglion cell layer thickness (GCLT), and inner plexiform layer thickness (IPLT).

Malignant gastric outlet obstruction (MGOO) is traditionally treated with surgical gastrojejunostomy (SGJ), which is effective but associated with high rates of morbidity, or endoscopic stenting (ES), which is less invasive but associated with significant risk of stent dysfunction and need for reintervention. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided gastroenterostomy (EUS-GE) provides a robust bypass without the invasiveness of surgery. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing EUS-GE to SGJ and ES for MGOO.

A New Technique for Use Instead of Lateral Crural Overlay for Reduction of Nasal Tip Projection in Revision Rhinoplasty.

Turk Arch Otorhinolaryngol

March 2023

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, İstanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, İstanbul, Turkey.

Objective: Correction of nasal tip projection (NTP) deformities involve techniques for the lower lateral cartilage of the nose. Previously, it would have been surgically difficult to perform the lateral crural overlay (LCO) technique for the second time in revision rhinoplasty in patients who already had undergone rhinoplasty with the LCO technique because of the length of the NTP. In this study, we evaluated the lateral crural segmental excision (LCSE) technique in patients with overprojected nasal tip in revision rhinoplasty.

Background: There is currently no standard medical device and method available for hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy studies in rats. In this study, we present our designed device and algorithm that operates based on our own protocol for hyperthermic intraperitoneal treatment in rats. The aim was to demonstrate the effectiveness of the designed device, algorithm, and hyperthermia protocol by showing that the device can achieve the desired temperature inside the rat's abdomen, does not cause rat loss due to complications, operates autonomously, and provides warnings to the operator in case of emergencies.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of a new marker that could be easily obtained to differentiate between complicated and uncomplicated appendicitis in a patients with a white blood cell (WBC) count within the normal range.

Methods: The patients who underwent surgery with histopathologically proven acute appendicitis (AA) between January 2021 and October 2022 were evaluated retrospectively. Patients were classified into two groups as uncomplicated and complicated appendicitis, based on the surgical and histopathological findings.

  • - This study examines six cases of pulled-in-two syndrome (PITS) occurring during strabismus surgeries, focusing on prevention and management strategies over a period from 2000 to 2022 at Beyoglu Eye Training and Research Hospital.
  • - All six cases involved patients with congenital fibrosis of extraocular muscles (CFEOM), predominantly affecting the medial rectus muscle, with an average age of 37.2 years, and the majority being adults.
  • - After surgical intervention, all involved muscles were successfully reattached without any patients experiencing diplopia, highlighting the importance of being prepared for potential complications in patients at risk, particularly those with CFEOM.

Background: Mechanisms to explain inflammation in male infertility of unknown cause are still being investigated. The inflammasome is a key regulator of innate immunity in the inflammatory response to infections. Our study aims to investigate the effects of varicocele on infertility, its relationship with antioxidant and inflammasome mechanisms, and how it could be guided in azoospermic or nonazoospermic patients.

Acinetobacter baumannii is one of the most serious opportunistic pathogens according to WHO. The difference between bacterial and mammalian fatty acid biosynthesis pathways makes FASII enzymes attractive targets in drug discovery. 3-oxoacyl-[acyl-carrier-protein] synthase I (FabB) from the FAS II pathway catalyze the condensation of malonyl ACP with acyl-ACP, and elongates the fatty acid chain by two carbons.

The hydroxyapatite-lanthanum strontium cobalt ferrite (HA-LSCF) composite showed a good response on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) electrochemical aptasensor to detect SARS-CoV-2. SPCE/HA-LSCF with a thiolated aptamer has a strong affinity for the SARS-CoV-2 spike RBD protein. This occurs due to the binding of -SH to the HA-positive region.

Introduction: This study aims to investigate the prognostic significance of the pre-treatment hemoglobin-red blood cell distribution width (RDW) ratio (HRR) in terms of overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in patients with locally advanced nasopharyngeal cancer (LANC) treated with chemoradiotherapy.

Methods: Patients with LANC who attended the oncology clinic between October 2010 and June 2020 were retrospectively screened. HRR was calculated as hemoglobin (g/dL) divided by the RDW (%).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effects of an FGF-2 soaked collagen membrane on healing full-thickness chronic rotator cuff tears in rabbits, comparing it with a standard repair technique.
  • After creating rotator cuff tears in rabbits, one group was treated with the collagen membrane while the other underwent traditional repair, but neither method showed significant differences in biomechanical strength or histological healing.
  • The findings suggest that using an FGF-2 soaked collagen membrane does not enhance the healing process of chronic rotator cuff tears, prompting the need for further research into other treatment options.

Investigation of CD56, ADAM17 and FGF21 Expressions in the Placentas of Preeclampsia Cases.

Medicina (Kaunas)

June 2023

Department of Gynecology and Obsterics, Faculty of Medicine, Zonguldak Bulent Ecevit University, Esenköy, Kozlu, 67000 Zonguldak, Turkey.

In the present study, we investigated the expression of CD56, ADAM17 and FGF21 antibodies (Ab), which we think have an effect on the pathophysiology of preeclampsia (PE), in pregnant patients with healthy placentas and placentas with PE. The expression of these antibodies has been investigated in a limited amount of former research, but their role in PE has not yet been clarified. With this study, we aimed to contribute to the elucidation of the pathophysiology of PE and the detection of new target molecules for treatment.
