Schwannomas commonly occur in the head and neck region but are rarely seen in the gastrointestinal tract; the stomach and small intestine are the most commonly involved sites. These tumors are usually misdiagnosed as gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) before histopathological confirmation due to radiological similarity. GI schwannomas show positivity for S100 protein and vimentin but are negative for CD 117 and CD 34, which helps in differentiating the tumor from GISTs.

Effects of oxotremorine on convulsions in mice induced by scopolamine and food intake after fasting.

Behav Brain Res

December 2024

Department of Medical Pharmacology, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul University, Istanbul, Turkey. Electronic address:

Antimuscarinic administration and food intake cause convulsions in mice and rats after fasting for 48 h or less. Increased M and M muscarinic receptor expression in brain regions during fasting, and reversal of changes by refeeding may contribute to these seizures. Since receptor expression is regulated in response to agonist stimulation, this study investigated effects of nonselective muscarinic receptor agonist oxotremorine on convulsions in fasted animals.

Bone fractures due to osteoporosis are a significant problem. Limited accuracy of standard bone mineral density (BMD) for fracture risk assessment, combined with low adherence to bone health screening precludes identification of those at risk of fracture. Because of the wide availability of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) imaging, bone screening using a DBT scanner at the time of breast screening has been proposed.

Background: In countries with low rates of deceased donor solid organ transplantations, live-donor liver transplantation is the preferred definitive treatment for children and adults with end-stage liver disease. However, it is known that a remarkable number of potential living liver donors are rejected due to ABO incompatibility, suboptimal liver mass, or anatomical features. Paired exchange liver transplantation (PELT) practice emerged to overcome these obstacles.

Article Synopsis
  • The Intermountain Risk Score (IMRS) is a simple and inexpensive tool that predicts mortality using patient demographics and basic lab results, specifically for those with acute pulmonary edema.
  • In a study of 371 patients, the IMRS effectively stratified patients into low, moderate, and high-risk groups based on their likelihood of dying within one month or one year of hospitalization.
  • Results showed that a cutoff IMRS value of 15.5 significantly predicted mortality risk, with higher scores correlating to greater risk of death, confirming the IMRS as a reliable predictor in this medical context.
