Influenza A H5N1 hemagglutinin (HA) plays a crucial role in viral pathogenesis and changes in the HA receptor binding domain (RBD) have been attributed to alterations in viral pathogenesis. Mutations often occur within the HA which in-turn results in HA structural changes that consequently contribute to protein evolution. However, the possible occurrence of mutations that results to reversion of the HA protein (going back to an ancestral protein conformation) which in-turn creates distinct HA structural patterns across the 1959-2023 H5N1 viral evolution has never been investigated.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined how common water filtration and purification systems (WFPS) are among residents in central Indiana and their effects on mineral concentrations in tap water.
  • Data was collected from 101 participants through a questionnaire and water sample analyses showed that 71% used WFPS, with pitcher filters being the most popular.
  • Results indicated that reverse osmosis systems significantly reduced mineral levels in tap water, while pitcher filters had minimal impact, highlighting the importance of choosing the right filtration system for health.

Background/purpose: Bone morphogenetic protein-9 (BMP-9) has demonstrated multiple advantages in promoting osteogenesis. Our previous findings have indicated that the use of an absorbable collagen membrane (ACM) as a carrier for growth factors is effective in stimulating bone regeneration. The objective of this study was to assess the synergistic impact of BMP-9 incorporated into ACM (ACM/BMP-9) on bone formation within rat mandibular bone defects.

  • Concerns about mercury toxicity from amalgam fillings have led to the exploration of ayurvedically purified mercury (AP-Hg) as a potentially safer alternative for dental treatment.
  • Human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) were tested with commercially available mercury (CA-Hg) and AP-Hg at various concentrations, and cell viability was assessed after 24 and 48 hours.
  • Results showed that AP-Hg led to higher cell viability and less cytotoxicity compared to CA-Hg, particularly significant at lower concentrations and over a longer period.

Background: Despite growing recognition of health disparities faced by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (or Questioning) (LGBTQ+) population, significant gaps remain for inclusion of LGBTQ+ content in health professions education, particularly dental curricula. This study aims to address these gaps by investigating the integration of LGBTQ+ content in a midwestern dental school curriculum.

Methods: Curriculum mapping and focus group discussions were utilized to identify gaps and recommend integrating LGBTQ+ content into a predoctoral dental curriculum.

Bifid mandibular canals are common anatomical findings with variations based on direction and location of branching, which carry significant clinical implications for endodontic and surgical dental procedures. This case report describes a previously unreported ectopic dental canal that branches off the superior border of the mandibular canal, enters the apex of a mandibular second molar, traverses through the root, anastomoses with the root canal system, and subsequently exits through the lingual aspect of the root. The anastomosis of this ectopic dental canal with the mesial lingual canal led to significant bleeding during rotary instrumentation.

The prescription of a course of oral antibiotics following bone grafting procedures is a common practice in clinical periodontics to reduce surgical site infections. The goal of this study is to characterize the release profile of antibiotics via local delivery using dendrimer hydrogels (DH) and to analyze the effect of two different particulate bone allografts on the release of the antibiotics in vitro. DH were synthesized from polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer G5 and polyethylene glycol diacrylate, and cefazolin was chosen as the antibiotic.

Introduction: Changes in facial appearance due to orthognathic surgery are known to improve a patient's postoperative quality of life, however, potential changes in cognitive function are unknown. This study examined the effects of changes in facial appearance due to orthognathic surgery on the sensitivity to self and to outside objects in patients with jaw deformities.

Methods: Patients with jaw deformities ( = 22) and healthy controls ( = 30) were tested at 3 months preoperatively, at 1 month preoperatively, and at 1 month postoperatively to assess their impression of objects (positive, negative, and neutral pictures) and their evaluation of their own face and body.

Coculture models are limited by bacteria rapidly outcompeting host mammalian cells for nutrients , resulting in mammalian cell death. The goal of this study was to develop a coculture model enabling survival of mammalian cells and oral bacterial species to assess their competition for growth on dental implant materials. Two early colonizing oral bacterial species, or , were grown in coculture with primary human macrophages or human gingival fibroblasts for up to 7 days on tissue-culture treated polystyrene or polished titanium and zirconia disks.

Sexual Dimorphism in the Musculoskeletal System: Sex Hormones and Beyond.

J Endocr Soc

August 2024

Department of Anatomy, Cell Biology & Physiology, Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, IN 46202-5120, USA.

Mounting evidence indicates that whereas some fundamental aspects of bone cell differentiation and function are similar in females and males, there is a clear contribution of sex/gender on the effects of signaling molecules on bone mass and strength and, consequently, on the effects of pharmacologic approaches to treat skeletal disorders. However, until recently, most studies were designed and performed using only 1 sex, resulting in a scarcity of published information on sexual dimorphism of the musculoskeletal system, including the mandible/masticatory muscles and the axial and appendicular bones and skeletal muscles. Further, it is now recognized that scientific rigor requires the study of both males and females.

September 2024

Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Prosthodontics, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; Department of Fixed Prosthodontics, Cairo University School of Dentistry, Cairo, Egypt.

Restoring extensively damaged endodontically treated teeth presents a challenging task due to the state of biomechanical deterioration affecting long-term prognosis. Therefore, the study aims to assess and compare the biomechanical performance of endocrowns and post core-crown restorations in anterior endodontically treated teeth with severe coronal structure loss. Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for articles published from January 2014 to March 2024.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored how a mandibular advancement appliance (MAD) affects corticomotor excitability in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
  • Using a randomized, placebo-controlled design, 28 adults with mild or moderate OSA were tested to see how a 2-week use of MAD impacted muscle responses in the masseter and tongue.
  • Results showed significant increases in both the masseter and tongue muscle activity after using the MAD, suggesting short-term use might enhance neuroplasticity in the brain pathways related to these muscles, which could improve understanding of OSA treatments.
