Recent focus has shifted toward refining the soft tissue emergence profile to enhance aesthetics, support peri-implant health, and ensure long-term success. Traditionally, titanium stock healing abutments or chairside-customized abutments were used to shape peri-implant tissues and develop the emergence profile for implant-supported prostheses. However, advancements in digital dentistry now allow for more precise customization and increased treatment efficiency.

Objective: This study aimed to predict long-term growth-related changes in skeletal and dental relationships within the craniofacial complex using machine learning (ML) models.

Materials And Methods: Cephalometric radiographs from 301 subjects, taken at pre-pubertal (T1, age 11) and post-pubertal stages (T2, age 18), were analysed. Three ML models-Lasso regression, Random Forest, and Support Vector Regression (SVR)-were trained on a subset of 240 subjects, while 61 subjects were used for testing.

Objectives: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis (OA) is an inflammatory disease that involves periarthritis of the TMJ and destruction of cartilage tissue in the mandibular condyle. However, the role of proinflammatory cytokines in the expression levels of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) remains inconclusive. Thus, in this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of proinflammatory cytokines on the expression of MMPs.

Statement Of Problem: Although immediate implant loading has shown promising clinical results and high survival rates, an increased risk of implant failure and complications has been reported. Achieving consistently predictable outcomes with this approach remains a challenge, but evidence-based guidelines to assist in selecting suitable patients are lacking.

Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective clinical study was to investigate the success rate, survival rate, and complications of immediate implant loading compared with early and delayed loading.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is an inheritable skeletal disorder characterized by bone fragility often caused by pathogenic variants in the COL1A1 gene. Current OI mouse models with a glycine substitution in Col1a1 exhibit excessive severity, thereby limiting long-term pathophysiological analysis and drug effect assessments. To address this limitation, we constructed a novel OI mouse model mimicking a patient with OI type III.

Department of Endodontics, Nihon University School of Dentistry, 1-8-13, Kanda-surugadai, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, 101-8310, Japan; Division of Advanced Dental Treatment, Dental Research Center, Nihon University School of Dentistry, Tokyo, Japan.

Introduction: We have recently reported the clinical efficacy of mirogabalin for occlusal pain due to post-traumatic trigeminal neuropathic pain (PTTN-occlusal pain) after endodontic treatment according to the International Classification of Orofacial Pain criteria. This study aimed to determine the mirogabalin administration period and timing of dose reduction and suspension for treating this condition based on managing a certain number of cases.

Methods: Patients diagnosed with PTTN-occlusal pain after or during endodontic treatment were included in the study.

Dermal fillers such as hyaluronic acid (HA) have been widely used in recent years as a less surgically invasive cosmetic treatment. Although delayed foreign body granuloma may occur as a rare adverse reaction after the procedure, detailed histological reports are still limited. When occurring on the buccal mucosa of the oral cavity, the histopathology may resemble some lesions of minor salivary gland origin due to the material properties of HA.

Sex determination method using the third cervical vertebral body by head and neck CT.

J Oral Biosci

December 2024

Division of Forensic Odontology, Department of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Sciences, Meikai University School of Dentistry, Saitama, Japan; Forensic Odontology Center, Meikai University School of Dentistry, Saitama, Japan.

Objectives: This study aimed to measure the volume of the third cervical vertebra using head and neck multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) and establish a sex determination model based on sex differences in volume.

Methods: Head and neck CT images of 85 patients were obtained for dental diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) data obtained from head and neck CT were constructed using a three-dimensional image analysis software.

Surgeons routinely interpret preoperative radiographic images for estimating the shape and position of the tooth prior to performing tooth extraction. In this study, we aimed to predict the difficulty of lower wisdom tooth extraction using only panoramic radiographs. Difficulty was evaluated using the modified Parant score.

This study aimed to clarify the effects of high-concentration fluoride varnish application on the inhibition of the progression of initial enamel caries. Remineralization capacity and acid resistance following high-concentration fluoride varnish application were compared with untreated models and models treated with fluoride mouthwash. Bovine enamel was used to create a model of initial enamel caries.

Universal shade flowable composites have been introduced to mimic tooth structure with reduced color mismatch and reduced chair time and cost. However, the polymerization shrinkage of resin material may lead to sensitivity and restoration failure. The purpose of this study was to compare the polymerization shrinkage of recently introduced universal shade flowable resin-based composites using both wet and dry density methods.

Objectives: Cyclosporine A promotes gingival fibrosis by enhancing the proliferation of gingival fibroblasts, leading to gingival overgrowth. The population of gingival fibroblasts is regulated by cell cycle machinery, which balances cell growth and inhibition. Cells that detect DNA damage pause at the G1/S checkpoint to repair the damage instead of progressing to the S phase.

Objectives: Daily-use fluoride products are first-line protection against enamel wear from dietary-acid exposure (DAE). This study aimed to understand effects of fluoride concentration, fluoride salt, product form and ingredients in daily-use products on remineralisation and demineralisation, via network meta-analysis (NMA) of 14 studies using one well-established in-situ model. Remineralisation (surface-microhardness recovery, SHMR) after treatment, and protection against subsequent demineralisation (acid-resistance ratio, ARR) were measured.

Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg

December 2024

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Nara Medical University, Nara, Japan.

The Japanese Society of Oral Oncology and Japanese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons have jointly developed clinical practice guidelines for oral cancer (oral squamous cell carcinoma) to improve and standardize the quality of oral cancer treatment in Japan. The first, second, and third editions were published in 2009, 2013, and 2019, respectively, and the 2023 edition was recently developed. In the development of the 2023 edition, 60 clinical questions (CQs) were listed.

Department of Immunology and Molecular Microbiology in Dental Science, Seoul National University School of Dentistry, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic T cell-mediated inflammatory mucosal disease of unknown etiology. The lack of suitable animal models has hampered understanding of its etiopathogenesis. This study aimed to clarify the contribution of bacterial infection and zinc deficiency (ZD) in OLP pathogenesis by developing a murine model.

The new orthognathic treatment strategy of non-segmental fixation (non-fix) sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) with jaw exercise initiation on the second postoperative day, the so-called physiological positioning strategy (PPS), induces good skeletal stability with few temporomandibular joint (TMJ) symptoms after surgery in skeletal class III. This study aimed to clarify whether non-fix SSRO with modified PPS can be applied to skeletal class II. This retrospective study included skeletal class II patients who underwent non-fix SSRO to correct mandibular retrognathia.
