Permanganate (Mn(VII)) is a traditional reagent used for water purification, but it is mild to deal with refractory organic contaminants of emerging concern. Purpose: We observed that the tumor microenvironment (TME) in metastatic epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) and in other solid tumors can reprogram normal neutrophils to acquire a complement-dependent suppressor phenotype characterized by inhibition of stimulated T cell activation. This study aims to evaluate whether serum markers of neutrophil activation and complement at diagnosis of EOC would be associated with clinical outcomes.

Experimental Design: We conducted a two-center prospective study of patients with newly diagnosed EOC (N = 188).

Objective: Therapeutic interventions for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) have increased greatly over the last decade but improvements outside of biomarker selected therapies have been limited. There remains a pressing need for more effective treatment options that can prolong survival and enhance the quality of life of patients with EOC. Lymph node assessment at the time of robotic hysterectomy for endometrial intraepithelial neoplasia: A cost-effectiveness analysis.

Objective: We sought to determine the cost-effectiveness (CE) of lymph node dissection (LND) at the time of hysterectomy for endometrial intraepithelial neoplasia (EIN).

Methods: A decision analytic model was created to evaluate the strategies of routine full LND, sentinel lymph node dissection (SNLD), SNLD without advancing to full LND in the event of non-mapping, and full LND based on Mayo Criteria, versus no LND. Patients in the no LND group and those in the SLND group without advancement to full LND in the event of non-mapping who were found to have EC on final pathology and suspicious post-operative imaging underwent full LND.

Added prognostic value of sentinel lymph node mapping in endometrial cancer to molecular subgroups.

Objective: Treatment approaches for endometrial cancer became more personalized in the last decade, mainly due to two key advancements - sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping and molecular classification. However, their prognostic interaction remains relatively unexplored.

However, its role in deterministic tasks during initial learning remains uncertain.

Protocol for evaluating the activity of R2 retrotransposons in mammalian cells.

R2 retrotransposons can be harnessed to insert genes at targeted sites by all-RNA delivery, presenting a new technology for next-generation biotherapeutics. Here, we report a protocol for evaluating the gene integration activity of R2 retrotransposons in mammalian cells. We describe the construction of vectors separately expressing R2 protein and donor, the process of liposome transfection, and flow cytometry.

Comparison of Ultrasound Characteristics of Peripapillary Hyperreflective Ovoid Mass-Like Structures (PHOMS) and Optic Disc Drusen in Children.

Background: In children, pseudopapilledema is frequently caused by peripapillary hyperreflective ovoid mass-like structures (PHOMS) or optic disc drusen (ODD). While enhanced depth imaging (EDI) OCT can identify both, lack of cooperation, especially from younger children due to the duration of testing, often necessitates the use of B-scan ultrasound (BSUS). This study investigated whether PHOMS are hyperreflective on BSUS and if BSUS can differentiate PHOMS from ODD.

Artificial Oxygen Carriers Save Lives in Expanded Access Use: Three Cases when Blood Was Not an Option.

Clinical Features: Sickle cell patients may develop a multitude of antibodies and experience life-threatening events with transfusion such as hyperhemolysis syndrome or delayed hemolytic transfusion reaction. Further transfusion may not be possible in such cases.

Therapeutic Challenge: When conventional blood products are not available for transfusion yet the patient requires additional oxygen-carrying support, artificial oxygen carriers may be required.

Gender inequality: policy responses to employment and education in BRICS countries.

This study assesses gender inequality in education and employment in BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) countries between the 2000 and 2021, using data from the World Bank database. A descriptive data analysis was carried out as well as graphical representations to compare among countries. The results showed that that female education achieved significant success, especially at secondary and tertiary levels, through specific policies including financial support and affirmative actions.

Challenges in acute postoperative pain management in thoracic surgery.

Effective pain control is crucial in the management of thoracic surgical patients since it reduces postoperative morbidity and promotes recovery. These patients have co-existing respiratory diseases and impaired pulmonary function, which may be further impaired by surgery. With the adoption of minimally invasive surgical techniques and an emphasis on enhancing recovery after surgery, multimodal analgesia has gained popularity as a way to reduce perioperative opioid use and its associated adverse events such as respiratory depression.

Anesthetic considerations for perioperative ECMO in lung transplantation.

The care for lung transplantation patients is a complex, multidisciplinary coordination of physician and non-physician teams throughout the perioperative period. The diversity of etiologies of recipient end-stage lung disease further complicate care, as recipients often present with concomitant end-stage cardiac disease. Recently, the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation has become the mechanical circulatory support of choice to provide cardiopulmonary stability throughout the perioperative period.

Updates in lung isolation techniques.

Innovations and challenges for lung separation or isolation have evolved during the last few years. In this chapter, we present the up-to-date, robust evidence available during the previous five years supporting the positions of the different devices, techniques, and tricks for their use in adult and pediatric patients undergoing various thoracic surgical interventions. Additionally, we presented an update on lung isolation in patients with airway difficulty and the suggested training level to master these techniques.

Anaemia is a common phenomenon in patients with malignant gynecological tumors. The occurrence of anaemia in the perioperative period leads to an increased probability of blood transfusion, increased surgical complications,poor wound healing, prolonged hospitalization, increased medical costs, and increased mortality. Intravenous iron, which is known for its rapid onset and lack of gastrointestinal side effects, has become increasingly prevalent in clinical practice.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and pregnancy.

Critical illness during pregnancy poses significant challenges driven by complex interactions between physiological changes, pre-existing conditions, and healthcare disparities. In high-income countries, increasing maternal age and comorbidities complicate obstetric care by triggering an unprecedented rise in cardiac disease during pregnancy, while infections like influenza and COVID-19 are important causes of maternal adult respiratory distress syndrome. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) gained prominence as a vital intervention, providing respiratory and/or cardiac support, for varying indications between antenatal and postpartum periods.
