Herpes zoster (HZ) is a common clinical condition caused by the reactivation of the latent varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Neurological complications after HZ have been described, including a rare condition of segmental zoster paresis (SZP), which results in unilateral motor impairment in the extremities. Only two cases of HZ patients with radiculopathy and MRI findings of neuritis have been reported.

The results of haploidentical stem cell transplantation (haploHCT) for patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) transplanted in active disease remain largely unknown. We retrospectively analyzed adult patients with R/R ALL who underwent haploHCT or matched sibling donor (MSD-HCT) as a first transplantation between 2012 and 2020. The analysis comprised 274 patients, 94 had a haploHCT, and 180 had an MSD-HCT.

Donor lymphocyte infusion (DLI) is a treatment option to prevent or treat relapse after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). We here report data for 173 patients who received one or multiple DLIs after haploidentical-HCT with post-transplant cyclophosphamide (PTCY) at 47 EBMT centers from 2009 to 2018. Indication for DLI was: prophylactic for 59 (34.

Background And Objectives: Although several repurposed antiviral drugs have been used for the treatment of COVID-19, only a few such as remdesivir and molnupiravir have shown promising effects. The objectives of our study were to investigate the association of repurposed antiviral drugs with COVID-19 morbidity.

Methods: Patients admitted to 26 different hospitals located in 16 different provinces between March 11-July 18, 2020, were enrolled.

Objective: The thalamocortical projections of the auditory system have not been detailed via microanatomical fiber dissections from a surgical viewpoint. The aim of this study was to delineate the course of the auditory radiations (ARs) from the medial geniculate body to their final destination in the auditory cortex. The authors' additional purpose was to display the relevant neural structures in relation to their course en route to Heschl's gyrus.

Background: Both mismatched unrelated donor (MMUD) and haploidentical (haplo) transplantation are valid options in patients with high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) lacking a matched donor.

Methods: The study compared the outcomes of adult patients with ALL in complete remission (CR) who underwent 9/10 MMUD versus haplo transplantation with posttransplant cyclophosphamide (PTCy) as graft-vs-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis in 2010-2020.

Results: The study included 781 patients (MMUD, 103; haplo, 678).

Objectives: To evaluate the maternal serum ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) concentration as an oxidative stress biomarker in pregnancies complicated by preterm pre-labor rupture of membranes (PPROM) without maternal clinical infection and compare these results with healthy pregnancies.

Material And Methods: The present cohort study included 40 pregnancies complicated by PPROM and 49 similar gestational age healthy pregnancies in the third trimester of gestation. Maternal venous blood specimens were obtained at the day of first diagnosis.

The terrible triad of the elbow consists of radial head fracture and coronoid process fracture in addition to posterior dislocation of the elbow. It indicates high-risk complications such as instability, malunion, nonunion, and proximal radioulnar synostosis. We describe a rare case that was admitted to the emergency service with a terrible triad of the elbow with additional capitellum fracture, lateral collateral ligament (LCL) injury, and ipsilateral humeral shaft fracture.

Aim: This study aimed to investigate the effect of the bevel orientation (facing upwards or downwards towards the skin) of the needle inserted into the arterial limb of the arteriovenous fistula (AVF) on puncture pain and postremoval bleeding time.

Methods: This study, using a single-blind crossover design, was conducted on 35 maintenance hemodialysis patients who had been dialyzed for at least 6 months and in whom blood access was via an AVF. AVF cannulation was performed with the needle bevel pointing upward in the first six sessions and the needle bevel pointing downwards (towards the skin) in the subsequent six sessions.

Protruded disc fragments that penetrate the posterior longitudinal ligament (PLL) migrate rostral or caudal in the vertical plane, some laterally in the horizontal plane, or into the foramina involving the anterior aspect of the spinal canal. Often, there is migration to the ventral epidural space. However, posterior epidural migration of a lumbar disc herniation (PEMLDH) is a rare phenomenon that makes the differential diagnosis challenging.

Introduction: Alectinib is an effective second-generation ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) used in the first-line treatment of patients with advanced ALK-positive NSCLC. Recent studies demonstrated that the percentage of ALK-positive tumor cells in patient groups receiving crizotinib might affect outcomes. This study aimed to investigate whether the percentage of ALK-positive cells had a predictive effect in patients with advanced NSCLC who received first-line Alectinib as ALK-TKI.

Article Synopsis
  • There is a link between increased oxidative stress markers and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), suggesting a potential biological basis for the condition.
  • The study involved 30 OCD patients and 30 healthy volunteers, comparing oxidative stress markers like NADPH oxidase-2 and -4, and malondialdehyde levels.
  • Results showed that OCD patients had significantly higher levels of these markers, along with strong positive correlations between some of the oxidative stress levels, indicating a possible relationship between these biological factors and OCD severity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of givinostat in treating ulcerative colitis in a rat model induced by acetic acid.
  • Thirty male rats were divided into three groups: one group received saline, and the other received givinostat, allowing for comparison of treatment effects on colitis.
  • Results indicated that givinostat significantly reduced inflammatory markers and improved histopathological outcomes compared to the saline group, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic option for colitis.

Background And Hypothesis: Meta-analyses have shown that the majority of patients with schizophrenia who have not improved after 2 weeks of treatment with an antipsychotic drug are unlikely to fully respond later. We hypothesized that switching to another antipsychotic with a different receptor binding profile is an effective strategy in such a situation.

Study Design: In total, 327 inpatients with an acute exacerbation of schizophrenia were randomized to double-blind treatment with either olanzapine (5-20 mg/day) or amisulpride (200-800 mg/day).

Measurable residual disease (MRD) assessment before allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) may help physicians to identify a subgroup of patients at high risk of relapse for de novo acute myeloid leukemia (AML) but its relevance among patients affected by secondary AML (sAML) is still unknown. We assessed the impact of MRD among 318 adult patients with sAML who received an allogeneic HCT in first complete remission. At the time of HCT, a total of 208 (65%) patients achieved MRD negativity, while 110 (35%) had positive MRD.

Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, corporate member of Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Berlin Institute of Health, Institute of Hygiene and Environmental Medicine, Berlin, Germany.

Background: Rational use of antibiotics (AB) and infection prevention and control (IPC) are key measures for reducing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in healthcare. Nonetheless, transferring evidence into clinical practice in emergency medicine has proven difficult. The extent to which structural requirements for implementing AMR control exist in German emergency departments (ED) was determined in a survey.
