Purpose: Identifying prognostic indicators for risk stratification in metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) is crucial for optimizing treatment strategies and follow-up plans. This study aims to investigate the prognostic role of the glucose-to-lymphocyte ratio (GLR) in patients with mRCC receiving tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) as first-line therapy.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from the Turkish Oncology Group Kidney Cancer Consortium Database.

Severe pertussis infections in pediatric intensive care units: a multicenter study.

Unlabelled: This study aims to evaluate the clinical course of critical pertussis illness to the pediatric intensive care unit in Istanbul. The study was conducted as a multicenter, retrospective study between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2023. Cases with positive polymerase chain reaction testing for Bordetella pertussis of nasopharyngeal swab samples within the first 24 h of pediatric intensive care unit admission were recorded.

Introduction: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic syndrome characterised by widespread pain, fatigue, and symptoms such as sleep disturbances, cognitive impairment, and mood disorders. FM prevalence is notably higher among systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients compared with the general population, often leading to diagnostic challenges. Misinterpreting FM as SLE activity can result in overtreatment.

Objective: Migration of pregnant women can be challenging. Access to adequate and respectful care may not be possible. We aimed to assess the maternity care that immigrant women receive and their satisfaction with the care they experience.

Can serum orexin levels be used as a marker in childhood epilepsy?

Objective: Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases in the pediatric population. Orexins are excitatory peptides and associated with energy homeostasis, eating and drinking behaviors, sleep regulation, sleep-wake periods, analgesia, and cognitive activities such as attention, learning, and memory. The aim of this study was to reveal the relationship between plasma orexin levels and seizures in pediatric epilepsy patients with seizures, epilepsy patients in remission, and healthy control group with similar demographic characteristics.

Investigation of the efficiency of different reprocessing methods on disposable laryngeal masks contaminated with HBV DNA.

Background: The use of laryngeal masks (LM) has increased widely today, both in anesthesia and in emergency cases. LM are available as reusable and disposable. Although reuse of disposable LM is not recommended, they are reused again after decontamination with different methods in anesthesia units in some countries.

The Prevalence of Migraine in Children Diagnosed with Familial Mediterranean Fever.

Purpose:  Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of fever and serositis, caused by mutations in the gene. Inflammatory pathways associated with FMF are linked to increased proinflammatory cytokines, which may be related to primary headaches, including migraine. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of migraine and other primary headaches in FMF patients.

Virtual reality headset versus traditional training in orthopedic surgery: A comparative study on real surgical performance in total knee arthroplasty.

Is it possible for a low-volume surgeon to enhance their surgical skills without performing actual surgeries by utilizing virtual reality headsets and emerging technologies? It has been observed that the time spent by surgical assistants in the operating room decreased after the post-shift leave regulation. In the literature, the use of virtual reality simulations as a support tool in surgical training is recommended. Although the efficacy of virtual reality surgical simulations in surgeries such as arthroscopy and laparoscopy has been proven, there are limited studies on their effect in open surgeries.

Double kissing crush versus culotte for bifurcation percutaneous coronary interventions: insights from the PROGRESS-BIFURCATION registry.

Background: Upfront 2-stent techniques are often used in bifurcation percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI), but there is controversy about optimal strategy selection.

Methods: The authors examined the clinical and angiographic characteristics and long-term outcomes of 232 bifurcation PCIs that were performed using the double kissing (DK) crush or culotte technique in 216 patients between 2014 and 2023 using data from the Prospective Global Registry for the Study of Bifurcation Lesion Interventions (NCT05100992). The inverse probability of treatment weighted (IPTW) Cox proportional hazards model was used to assess long-term outcomes.

Serum FoxO1 and SIRT2 concentrations in healthy pregnant women and complicated by preeclampsia.

Background: Sirtuins and FoxO1 are reported to be important in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia. This study aimed to investigate whether serum FoxO1 and SIRT2 concentrations differ between preeclampsia and normal pregnancy and also to compare these markers in early- and late-onset preeclampsia.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 27 women with early-onset preeclampsia, 27 women with late-onset preeclampsia, and 26 healthy normotensive pregnant controls.

Background: Polysomnography (PSG) is resource-intensive but remains the gold standard for diagnosing Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). We aimed to develop a screening tool to better allocate resources by identifying individuals at higher risk for OSA, overcoming limitations of current tools that may under-diagnose based on self-reported symptoms.

Methods: A total of 884 patients (490 diagnosed with OSA) were included, which was divided into the training, validation, and test sets.

Hepatitis B vaccine and juvenile idiopathic arthritis: comparison of the seropositivity rates with healthy children at the time of diagnosis and booster dose response under treatment.

Introduction/objectives: The study aimed to determine whether in children with newly diagnosed juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) differs from healthy children and to see whether the revaccination is safe and effective under JIA treatment.

Methods: Patients who were followed up with a diagnosis of JIA between January 2020 and February 2024 were included. The control group consisted of healthy children matched for age and gender.

Background: Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a rare and serious form of systemic necrotizing vasculitis that predominantly affects medium and small-sized arteries, with central nervous system involvement being particularly uncommon. Treatment strategies are tailored according to the extent and severity of the disease. While conventional therapy includes glucocorticoids and conventional disease-modifying-rheumatic drugs (cDMARDs), biologic agents may be critical for severe and refractory cases.

Clinical Relevance: Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PXS) is a common age-related disorder associated with glaucoma and cataract. Despite its clinical importance, the pathogenesis of PXS is not yet fully understood.

Background: To evaluate levels of SCUBE-1 (signal peptide, CUB domain, and epidermal growth factor-like domain containing protein 1) in the serum and aqueous humour of patients with PXS in comparison with non-PXS controls.

The relationship between sexual health literacy and sexual function of women with diabetes mellitus: a cross-sectional study.

Background: Sexual dysfunction (SD) is a complication of poorly managed diabetes mellitus (DM). To prevent SD, patients should develop sexual health literacy (SHL).

Objective: This study investigated the relationship between SHL and SD in women with DM.

The Effect of Genotype Differences on Cardiac Involvement in Cases Diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Aim:  Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is the most frequently seen muscular disease in childhood. Cardiac involvement is extremely important in terms of morbidity and mortality in these patients. Different studies have shown that mutations occurring in various exons are cardioprotective or increase cardiac involvement in DMD cases.

Prediction of treatment efficacy in psoriasis vulgaris using dermoscopic and capillaroscopic findings: a prospective cohort study.

Introduction: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder affecting millions worldwide. Dermoscopy and proximal nailfold capillaroscopy have emerged as valuable tools for understanding the pathophysiology and treatment response of psoriasis lesions.

Objectives: This study aimed to contribute to the limited literature on using dermoscopic findings to detect treatment effectiveness in patients with psoriasis vulgaris.

Are IL-17 inhibitors superior to IL-23 inhibitors in reducing systemic inflammation in moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis? A retrospective cohort study.

IL-17 and IL-23 inhibitors have shown successful results in improving skin lesions in the treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. However, psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by systemic inflammation including joints in addition to skin lesions. Therefore, in this retrospective and observational cohort study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of IL-17 inhibitors (secukinumab and ixekizumab) and IL-23 inhibitors (risankizumab and guselkumab) on systemic inflammation in psoriasis.

Expanding the genotypic spectrum of 3β-hydroxy-δ5-C27-steroid dehydrogenase (HSD3B7) deficiency: novel mutations and clinical outcomes.

Objectives: HSD3B7 deficiency is a genetic disorder caused by mutations in the gene, leading to impaired bile acid synthesis and the accumulation of toxic intermediates. Affected patients typically present with cholestatic liver disease, including jaundice and progressive liver dysfunction.

Case Presentation: This case series describes three pediatric patients from two families diagnosed with HSD3B7 deficiency, each demonstrating varying clinical severity and outcomes.

The impact of a disaster medicine clinical training program on medical students' disaster literacy.

Background: This study was conducted to assess how students' disaster literacy was affected by the Disaster Medicine Clinical Training Program at the Izmir Democracy University Faculty of Medicine (IDUFM) during the academic year 2022-2023.

Methods: Using an experimental method involving experimental and control groups, measurements were made at different times. The sample consisted of 5th-year students at IDUFM for the experimental group, while the control group was composed of 3rd- and 4th-year students from different buildings with limited interaction with the experimental group.

Reassessing very long chain fatty acids elevations: Sitosterolemia as a non-peroxisomal cause.

Very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) are commonly used to diagnose peroxisomal disorders, but elevated levels may also result from other non-peroxisomal causes, leading to diagnostic challenges. We report the case of a 2-year-old girl presenting with growth retardation and diarrhea, with laboratory investigations revealing elevated VLCFA levels suggestive of a peroxisomal disorder. Despite initial suspicion, genetic panels for peroxisomal and dyslipidemia-associated genes were negative.

Early career psychiatrists' perceptions of and training experience in electroconvulsive therapy: A cross-sectional survey across Europe.

Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a safe and effective treatment for several major psychiatric conditions, including treatment-resistant depression, mania, and schizophrenia; nevertheless, its use remains controversial. Despite its availability in some European countries, ECT is still rarely used in others. This study aims to investigate the experiences and attitudes of early career psychiatrists (ECPs) across Europe towards ECT and to examine how their exposure to ECT influences their perceptions.

An Unusual Acute Otitis Media Complication: Luc's Abscess.

Otitis media, a common childhood disease, can lead to serious complications such as acute mastoiditis and, rarely, Luc's abscess, with life-threatening consequences. Luc's abscess, a rare but severe complication, can occur without acute mastoiditis. This case report details a case of Luc's abscess in a 14-year-old girl with acute otitis media, presenting with ear pain, facial swelling, and hearing loss.

Changes in corneal wavefront aberrations and anterior segment parameters after horizontal rectus muscle surgeries assessed using Pentacam®.

Clinical Relevance: Horizontal rectus muscle surgeries may cause changes in corneal and anterior segment parameters. Corneal topography is an important device for identifying these alterations.

Background: The aim of this work is to evaluate the effects of horizontal rectus muscle surgeries on corneal topography, anterior chamber parameters and corneal wavefront aberrations.
