Purpose: We aimed to characterize and further understand CSF circulation and outflow of rabbits. To our knowledge, there is no research on contrast material-enhanced MR cisternography (CE-MRC) with T1 and T2 mapping in the rabbit model using a clinical 3-T MR unit without a stereotaxic frame.

Materials And Methods: Twenty-one rabbits were included in the study.

Background/objectives: Ebola virus disease (EVD) survivors develop post-acute ophthalmic sequelae, including a high prevalence of uveitis that may be complicated by vision-threatening cataract. After the non-detection of Ebola virus (EBOV) RNA in sampled ocular fluid, vision impairment due to cataract can be treated safely and effectively via manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS). However, the long-term ocular visual outcomes and assessment of ocular tissues, including for genomic RNA, have been infrequently or not reported in Western African survivors.

Background: Breast cancer is emerging as a leading cause of mortality among women and adolescent girls in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, there is a lack of clarity on the enablers and barriers associated with the implementation of preventive strategies, such as breast self-examination (BSE), particularly among adolescent girls.

Objective: This paper presents a protocol for conducting a systematic review aiming to synthesise studies on the enablers and barriers to implementing BSE education programmes among adolescent girls in SSA.

Hypernatremia is associated with mortality in severe elderly sepsis patients.

PLoS One

November 2024

Department of Critical Care Medicine, Nanjing First Hospital, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how high sodium levels (hypernatremia) impact 28-day survival rates in older patients suffering from sepsis, comparing those with sepsis to those without.* -
  • The research analyzed data from 179 elderly patients, revealing that septic patients had elevated sodium levels for a longer duration and higher 7-day mortality rates compared to non-septic patients.* -
  • Results indicated that while septic patients had consistently higher sodium levels over the first week, there was no significant difference in mechanical ventilation time or ICU stay duration between the two groups, but peak sodium levels could predict prognosis severity.*

Clinical outcomes of right ventricular outflow tract stenting compared to surgical shunting in late-presenting children.

Front Cardiovasc Med

October 2024

Division of Non-Invasive Diagnostic and Cardiovacular Imaging, Department of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine, National Cardiovascular Centre Harapan Kita, Universitas Indonesia, Jakarta, Indonesia.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the use of right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) stenting versus the modified Blalock-Taussig shunt (mBTS) as treatments for children with stenotic RVOTs aged 1 to 18, revealing limited literature on their comparative effectiveness.* -
  • Data from 58 patients indicated that both procedures resulted in similar rates of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), but mBTS patients had shorter overall hospital stays, while RVOT stenting led to shorter ICU stays.* -
  • Overall, RVOT stenting showed comparable results to mBTS concerning MACE and oxygen saturation levels at discharge, suggesting it could be a viable option for palliation in this patient population.*

  • * 39 patients with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis or Scheuermann Kyphosis were divided into three groups based on their anesthesia type, and the occurrence of clonus was monitored during awakening.
  • * Results showed varying rates of clonus across groups, but no significant link with surgery factors, and no neurological deficits were reported post-surgery, suggesting that ankle clonus isn't a reliable indicator of neurological impairment.

The 2013-2016 Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) epidemic in West Africa was the deadliest in history, with over 28,000 cases. Numerous physical and mental health symptoms have been reported in EVD survivors, although there is limited prior research on how the health of survivors compares to the general population. We conducted a survey of EVD survivors in Kenema District, Sierra Leone and a population-based sample of community members who lived in EVD-affected areas but were not diagnosed with EVD, and compared resulting data about self-reported symptoms, duration, and severity between EVD survivors and community members through multivariate regression models.

Introduction Infections pose a significant challenge in orthopedics related to implant failure. In orthopedic surgeries, surgical site infections (SSIs) extend the patient's hospital stay by an average of two weeks and also increase morbidity, double hospitalization rates, and triple the financial burden on the patient. This study aims to determine the common organism in patients with postoperative implant infections presenting at a tertiary care hospital.

Pre-clinical and clinical evidence proposes that creatine monohydrate, an affordable nutraceutical, could be a useful adjunct to conventional antidepressant treatments. In this pilot feasibility and exploratory study, we investigate the 8-week effects of creatine in addition to cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) versus placebo plus CBT in depression. For the primary efficacy outcome of change in Patient Health Questionnaire-9 depression score at study endpoint, we used mixed-model repeated measures analysis of covariance.
