The developing avian skin during embryogenesis is a unique model that can provide valuable insights into tissue patterning. Here three variations on skin explant cultures to examine different aspects of skin development are described. First, ex vivo organ cultures and manipulations offer researchers opportunities to observe and study the development of feather buds directly.

Hybrid PET/MRI is highly valuable, having made significant strides in overcoming technical challenges and offering unique advantages such as reduced radiation, precise data coregistration, and motion correction. Growing evidence highlights the value of PET/MRI in broad clinical aspects, including inflammatory and oncological imaging in adults, pregnant women, and pediatrics, potentially surpassing PET/CT. This newly integrated solution may be preferred over PET/CT in many clinical conditions.

Background/objective: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (CPIs) activate antitumoral immune responses and are used to treat multiple types of primary and metastatic malignancies. Thyroid dysfunction is a known immune-related adverse event of CPI therapy. There are few data on the effect of CPI and CPI-induced thyroiditis on primary papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC).

Background: Community input is crucial for identifying characteristics necessary for equitable, sustainable community-academic partnerships (CAPs). A November 2021 conference, honoring the late Dr. Loretta Jones and the Community-Partnered Participatory Research (CPPR) model, was held to gather input for designing a learning institute for community members as co-equal partners with academics in research, program, and policy initiatives.

Background: Community-related health assessments have been shown to improve several outcomes in socioeconomically disadvantaged populations with comorbid chronic health conditions. However, while it is recognized that modifiable social determinant of health (SDH) factors might be responsible for up to 60% of preventable deaths, it is not yet standard of care to routinely screen and address these at preventive health appointments. The objective of this study was to identify the social needs of socioeconomically disadvantaged patients.

The Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) aims to improve Alzheimer's disease (AD) clinical trials. Since 2006, ADNI has shared clinical, neuroimaging, and cognitive data, and biofluid samples. We used conventional search methods to identify 1459 publications from 2021 to 2022 using ADNI data/samples and reviewed 291 impactful studies.

Background: Many adolescent and young adult female (AYA-F) cancer survivors face decisions about family building using reproductive medicine or adoption to achieve parenthood. This study evaluated associations among reproductive distress, avoidance, and family-building decision making and identified sociodemographic and clinical characteristics related to high distress and avoidance.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey assessed AYA-F survivors' oncofertility experiences.

Background: The global coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in procedural delays around the world; however, timely and aggressive surgical resection for malignant brain tumor patients is essential for outcome optimization. To investigate the association between COVID-19 and outcomes of these patients, we queried the 2020 National Inpatient Sample (NIS) for differences in rates of surgical resection, time to surgery, mortality, and discharge disposition between patients with and without confirmed COVID-19 infection.
Methods: Patient data were taken from the NIS from April 2020 to December 2020.

Objective: Vocal fold injection medialization (VFIM) is widely used as an initial treatment for unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP). Current practices employ materials that share the limitation of temporary clinical effect from variable resorption rates. A novel silk protein microparticle-hyaluronic acid-based material (silk-HA) has demonstrated cellular infiltration and tissue deposition that may portend a durable medialization effect.

Invasive brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have shown promise in restoring motor function to those paralyzed by neurological injuries. These systems also have the ability to restore sensation via cortical electrostimulation. Cortical stimulation produces strong artifacts that can obscure neural signals or saturate recording amplifiers.

Background: Foot deformities and gait abnormalities can result in locally elevated peak pedal pressures or atypical pedal biomechanics. Combined with underlying comorbidities such as neuropathy, stroke, atrophic fat padding and history of ulcerations, this can lead to recurrent ulcerations and pain. Pedal fat grafting (PFG) is a treatment modality that has been shown to reduce peak pressures and accelerate wound healing.

Background And Objectives: Assessment and feedback are critical to surgical education, but direct observational feedback by experts is rarely provided because of time constraints and is typically only qualitative. Automated, video-based, quantitative feedback on surgical performance could address this gap, improving surgical training. The authors aim to demonstrate the ability of Shannon entropy (ShEn), an information theory metric that quantifies series diversity, to predict surgical performance using instrument detections generated through deep learning.

This scoping review aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of DRFC among First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples in Canada, incorporating an equity lens.
Methods: A scoping review was conducted based on Arksey and O'Malley refined by the Joanna Briggs Institute.

The prevalence of pediatric obesity has increased exponentially over the past four decades. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently released updated clinical practice guidelines highlighting the importance of identifying pediatric obesity as a chronic disease. The guidelines support consideration of concurrent treatment with intensive lifestyle interventions, obesity pharmacotherapy, and bariatric surgery.

Context.—: Increased band neutrophils in blood smear differential counts ("bandemia") are entrenched in medicine as a flag for sepsis. However, laboratory hematology experts have long advocated for discontinuation of reporting bands separately from segmented neutrophils because of poor sensitivity and specificity, poor interobserver agreement, and availability of alternative biomarkers for sepsis.
