Chemical sensors, relying on changes in the electrical conductance of a gas-sensitive material due to the surrounding gas, typically react with multiple target gases and the resulting response is not specific for a certain analyte species. The purpose of this study was the development of a multi-sensor platform for systematic screening of gas-sensitive nanomaterials. We have developed a specific Si-based platform chip, which integrates a total of 16 sensor structures.

Capturing environmental stimuli is an essential aspect of electronic skin applications in robotics and prosthetics. Sensors made of temperature- and humidity-responsive hydrogel and piezoelectric zinc oxide (ZnO) core-shell nanorods have shown the necessary sensitivity. This is achieved by using highly conformal and substrate independent deposition methods for the ZnO and the hydrogel, i.

The rapid development of microsystems technology with the availability of various machine learning algorithms facilitates human activity recognition (HAR) and localization by low-cost and low-complexity systems in various applications related to industry 4.0, healthcare, ambient assisted living as well as tracking and navigation tasks. Previous work, which provided a spatiotemporal framework for HAR by fusing sensor data generated from an inertial measurement unit (IMU) with data obtained by an RGB photodiode for visible light sensing (VLS), already demonstrated promising results for real-time HAR and room identification.

Porous zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were synthesized via the calcination of molecular layer-deposited (MLD) "zincone" layers. The effect of the MLD process temperature (110 °C, 125 °C) and of the calcination temperature (340 °C, 400 °C, 500 °C) on the chemical, morphological, and crystallographic properties of the resulting ZnO was thoroughly investigated. Spectroscopic ellipsometry reveals that the thickness of the calcinated layers depends on the MLD temperature, resulting in 38-43% and 52-56% of remaining thickness for the 110 °C and 125 °C samples, respectively.

Grazing incidence x-ray diffraction (GIXD) is a frequently used tool for the crystallographic characterization of thin films in terms of polymorph identification and determination of the crystallographic lattice parameters. Even full structure solutions are possible. To obtain highly accurate diffraction patterns, the thin film sample has to be aligned carefully with the center of the goniometer, which allows a defined incidence of the primary x-ray beam relative to the sample surface.

Magnetoelectric (magnetic/piezoelectric) heterostructures bring new functionalities to develop novel transducer devices such as (wireless) sensors or energy harvesters and thus have been attracting research interest in the last years. We have studied the magnetoelectric coupling between Metglas films (2826 MB) and poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) in a laminate structure. The metallic Metglas film itself served as bottom electrode and as top electrode we used an electrically conductive polymer, poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS).

Direct-write additive manufacturing of graphene and carbon nanotube (CNT) patterns by aerosol jet printing (AJP) is promising for the creation of thermal and electrical interconnects in (opto)electronics. In realistic application scenarios, this however often requires deposition of graphene and CNT patterns on rugged substrates such as, for example, roughly machined and surface-oxidized metal block heat sinks. Most AJP of graphene/CNT patterns has thus far however concentrated on flat wafer- or foil-type substrates.

Flexible electronics have gained considerable attention for application in wearable devices. Organic transistors are potential candidates to develop flexible integrated circuits (ICs). A primary technique for maximizing their reliability, gain, and operation speed is the modulation of charge-carrier behavior in the respective transistors fabricated on the same substrate.

Abstract: With the Covid-19-based global pandemic that started in the beginning of 2020, the vital importance of accelerated, reliable and affordable virus testing systems has once again become clearer. Besides, we all learned very well that the disposable biochips, to be used in these in vitro diagnostic (IVD) testing systems, supposed to be produced in large amounts in a very short time to be widely available for the use of humanity to save more and more lives. That is why; roll-to-roll (R2R) polymer structuring manners offer such large quantities for the production of in vitro biochips.

Identification and sensing are two of the main tasks a wireless sensor node has to perform in an Internet of Things (IoT) environment. Placing active powered nodes on objects is the most usual approach for the fulfillment of these functions. With the expected massive increase of connected things, there are several issues on the horizon that hamper the further deployment of this approach in an energy efficient, sustainable way, like the usage of environmentally hazardous batteries or accumulators, as well as the required electrical energy for their operation.

Energy autonomy and conformability are essential elements in the next generation of wearable and flexible electronics for healthcare, robotics and cyber-physical systems. This study presents ferroelectric polymer transducers and organic diodes for imperceptible sensing and energy harvesting systems, which are integrated on ultrathin (1-µm) substrates, thus imparting them with excellent flexibility. Simulations show that the sensitivity of ultraflexible ferroelectric polymer transducers is strongly enhanced by using an ultrathin substrate, which allows the mounting on 3D-shaped objects and the stacking in multiple layers.

GaAs compound-based electronics attracted significant interest due to unique properties of GaAs like high electron mobility, high saturated electron velocity and low sensitivity to heat. However, GaAs compound-based electronics demand a significant decrease in their manufacturing costs to be a good competitor in the commercial markets. In this context, copper-based nanoparticle (NP) inks represent one of the most cost-effective metal inks as a proper candidate to be deposited as contact grids on GaAs.

The process of modern cardiovascular device fabrication should always be associated with an investigation of how surface properties modulate its hemocompatibility through plasma protein adsorption as well as blood morphotic element activation and adhesion. In this work, a package of novel assays was used to correlate the physicochemical properties of thin ceramic coatings with hemocompatibility under dynamic conditions. Different variants of carbon-based films were prepared on polymer substrates using the magnetron sputtering method.

Molybdenum disulphide (MoS) thin films have received increasing interest as device-active layers in low-dimensional electronics and also as novel catalysts in electrochemical processes such as the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in electrochemical water splitting. For both types of applications, industrially scalable fabrication methods with good control over the MoS film properties are crucial. Here, we investigate scalable physical vapour deposition (PVD) of MoS films by magnetron sputtering.

Cyanated pentacenes are very promising candidate materials for ambipolar and n-type transistors. However, only a few examples have been obtained to date - all requiring lengthy, multi-step processes. Herein, we present the first preparation of 5,7,12,14-tetracyanopentacene (TCP) and a facile, scaled-up preparation of 6,13-dicyanopentacene (DCP).

Abstract: Highly fluorescent and photostable (2-alkyl)-1-benzo[]isoquinoline-1,3(2)-diones with a polymerizable norbornene scaffold have been synthesized and polymerized using ring-opening metathesis polymerization. The monomers presented herein could be polymerized in a living fashion, using different comonomers and different monomer ratios. All obtained materials showed good film-forming properties and bright fluorescence caused by the incorporated push-pull chromophores.

Organic thin-film transistors for high frequency applications require large transconductances in combination with minimal parasitic capacitances. Techniques aiming at eliminating parasitic capacitances are prone to produce a mismatch between electrodes, in particular gaps between the gate and the interlayer electrodes. While such mismatches are typically undesirable, we demonstrate that, in fact, device structures with a small single-sided interlayer electrode gap directly probe the detrimental contact resistance arising from the presence of an injection barrier.
