Endometriosis is an inflammatory disease characterized by the presence of ectopic endometrial tissue, immune cell dysfunction and abnormal cytokine secretion. In addition to immunological factors, genetic variations that influence endometriosis severity and cytokine expression levels play important roles in the pathogenesis of this disease. Interleukin-12 (IL-12), specifically its p40 subunit encoded by IL-12B gene and the interleukin-12 receptor β1 (IL-12Rβ2) chain of its receptor, as well as interleukin-27 (IL-27) are important in the establishment of endometriosis.

Background: The alternative NF-κB pathway is activated by the NF-κB-inducing kinase (NIK) mediated phosphorylation of the inhibitor of κ-B kinase α (IKKα). IKKα then phosphorylates p100/NFKB2 to result in its processing to the active p52 subunit. Evidence suggests that basal breast cancers originate within a subpopulation of luminal progenitor cells which is expanded by signaling to IKKα.

Although various inhibitors have been employed to react with phenylacetaldehyde to form adducts and thus interrupt the formation of 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-]pyridine (PhIP), high concentrations of PhIP remain in the final system. It remains unknown whether other critical aldehyde or ketone intermediates are involved in the generation of PhIP, and scavenging these reactive carbonyls simultaneously may achieve higher inhibitory efficiency of PhIP. In this study, reactive carbonyls in a glucose/creatinine/phenylalanine model system were first identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and then the single and synergistic effects of nonprecursor amino acids (cysteine, methionine, proline, histidine, arginine, and leucine) on scavenging reactive carbonyls were investigated to find out promising combination partners.

Epigallocatechin gallate for Parkinson's disease.

Clin Exp Pharmacol Physiol

October 2022

National "111" Center for Cellular Regulation and Molecular Pharmaceutics, Key Laboratory of Fermentation Engineering (Ministry of Education), Hubei University of Technology, Wuhan, China.

In the last couple of decades, we have experienced increased use of nutraceuticals worldwide with a demand for organic foods, which has been elevated to an extent probably unmatched with other periods of our civilization. One of the nutraceuticals that gained attention is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a polyphenol in green tea. It has been suggested that diseases of the central nervous system can benefit from consuming some antioxidants, despite current results showing little evidence for their use in preventing and treating these diseases.

Influenza is a major public health concern causing millions of hospitalizations every year. The current vaccines need annual updating based on prediction of likely strains in the upcoming season. However, mismatches between vaccines and the actual circulating viruses can occur, reducing vaccine effectiveness significantly because of the remarkably high rate of mutation in the viral glycoprotein, hemagglutinin (HA).

Infantile Appendicitis: A Deceptive Challenge with Disastrous Consequences.

Case Rep Gastroenterol

April 2022

Anatomic Pathology Division, Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Acute appendicitis (AA) in neonates and infants is an infrequent event. In day-to-day practice, death due to AA is hardly ever reported to a coroner or a medical examiner. Here, we report on an 8-month-old infant assigned to the medical examiner as the death occurred within 10 days of a surgical procedure.

Tribo-Piezoelectricity in Group III Nitride Bilayers: A Density Functional Theory Investigation.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

May 2022

Department of Electrical and Biomedical Engineering, University of Nevada, Reno, Nevada 89557, United States.

The notable out-of-plane piezoelectric effect caused by the large electronegativity of the constituent elements makes two-dimensional (2D) group III nitrides appealing for nanoscale energy-harvesting applications. Here, we demonstrate by extensive density functional theory investigations that the vertical piezoelectricity is enhanced significantly in 2D XN (X = B, Al, Ga) bilayers due to in-plane interlayer sliding. The sliding operation generates tribological energy from the vertical resistance force between the monolayers.
