Background: Pulsed field ablation is a novel nonthermal cardiac ablation modality using ultra-rapid electrical pulses to cause cell death by a mechanism of irreversible electroporation. Unlike the traditional ablation energy sources, pulsed field ablation has demonstrated significant preferentiality to myocardial tissue ablation, and thus avoids certain thermally mediated complications. However, its safety and effectiveness remain unknown in usual clinical care.

Inducible gene expression systems are invaluable tools for the functional characterization of genes and in the construction of protein overexpression hosts. Controllable expression is especially important for the study of essential and toxic genes or genes where the level of expression tightly influences their cellular effect. Here, we implemented the well-characterized tetracycline-inducible expression system in two industrially important lactic acid bacteria, Lactococcus lactis and Streptococcus thermophilus.

Deletion of SERF2 in mice delays embryonic development and alters amyloid deposit structure in the brain.

Life Sci Alliance

July 2023

European Research Institute for the Biology of Ageing, University of Groningen, University Medical Centre Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands

In age-related neurodegenerative diseases, like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, disease-specific proteins become aggregation-prone and form amyloid-like deposits. Depletion of SERF proteins ameliorates this toxic process in worm and human cell models for diseases. Whether SERF modifies amyloid pathology in mammalian brain, however, has remained unknown.

Introduction And Objective: The risks and benefits of medication use in pregnancy are typically established through post-marketing observational studies. As there is currently no standardised or systematic approach to the post-marketing assessment of medication safety in pregnancy, data generated through pregnancy pharmacovigilance (PregPV) research can be heterogenous and difficult to interpret. The aim of this article is to describe the development of a reference framework of core data elements (CDEs) for collection in primary source PregPV studies that can be used to standardise data collection procedures and, thereby, improve data harmonisation and evidence synthesis capabilities.

Surface electromyography to quantify neuro-respiratory drive and neuro-mechanical coupling in mechanically ventilated children.

Respir Res

March 2023

Division of Paediatric Critical Care Medicine, Department of Paediatrics, Beatrix Children's Hospital, University Medical Center Groningen, University of Groningen, Hanzeplein 1, 9713 GZ, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Background: The patient's neuro-respiratory drive, measured as electrical activity of the diaphragm (EAdi), quantifies the mechanical load on the respiratory muscles. It correlates with respiratory effort but requires a dedicated esophageal catheter. Transcutaneous (surface) monitoring of respiratory muscle electromyographic (sEMG) signals may be considered a suitable alternative to EAdi because of its non-invasive character, with the additional benefit that it allows for simultaneously monitoring of other respiratory muscles.

Objectives: Therapeutic drug monitoring is performed routinely in patients on anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) for optimisation and individualisation of therapy. The dried blood spot (DBS) sampling technique is a suitable, more patient-friendly alternative for conventional venous sampling methods. However, before DBS can be used in routine care, data are needed to establish the correlation between standard plasma concentrations obtained from venous puncture and concentrations measured through DBS obtained by finger prick.

Introduction: Serous ovarian carcinomas constitute the largest group of epithelial ovarian cancer (60%-75%) and are further classified into high- and low-grade serous carcinoma. Low-grade serous carcinoma (LGSC) is a relatively rare subtype (approximately 5% of serous carcinomas) and epidemiologic studies of large cohorts are scarce. With the present study we aimed to report trends in stage, primary treatment and relative survival of LGSC of the ovary in a large cohort of patients in an effort to identify opportunities to improve clinical practice and outcome of this relatively rare disease.

Background: Preterm birth is the leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality and is associated with adverse developmental and long-term health outcomes, including several cardiometabolic risk factors and outcomes. However, evidence about the association of preterm birth with later body size derives mainly from studies using birth weight as a proxy of prematurity rather than an actual length of gestation. We investigated the association of gestational age (GA) at birth with body size from infancy through adolescence.
