Schizophrenia (SCZ), bipolar (BD) and major depression disorder (MDD) are severe psychiatric disorders that are challenging to treat, often leading to treatment resistance (TR). It is crucial to develop effective methods to identify and treat patients at risk of TR at an early stage in a personalized manner, considering their biological basis, their clinical and psychosocial characteristics. Effective translation of theoretical knowledge into clinical practice is essential for achieving this goal.

Insect-based food ingredients are emerging as sustainable protein sources, but their production requires ensuring microbial safety and inactivation of endogenous enzymes to avoid undesirable proteolysis, without compromising protein structure. While traditional thermal processing affects the protein structure, the potential of pulsed electric field (PEF) technology to inactivate microorganisms in lesser mealworm and house cricket slurries at pH 3 while simultaneously retaining the native protein structure is yet unexplored. Lesser mealworm and house cricket slurries at pH 3 were subjected to continuous and batch PEF treatments with varying intensities (0-450 kJ/kg).

Plastic input and dynamics in industrial composting.

Waste Manag

December 2024

Institute for Crop Science and Resource Conservation (INRES) - Soil Science and Soil Ecology, University of Bonn, Nussallee 13, 53115 Bonn, Germany. Electronic address:

Green and biowaste, processed within large facilities into compost, is a key fertilizer for agricultural and horticultural soils. However, due to improper waste disposal of plastic, its residues often remain or even lead to the formation ofmicroplastics (1 µm - 5 mm, MiPs) in the final compost product. To better understand the processes, we first quantified 'macroplastics' (> 20 mm, MaPs) input via biowaste collection into an industrial composting plant, and, then determined MiP concentrations at five stages during the composting process (before and after shredding and screening processes), and in the water used for irrigation.

Purpose To extend a previously developed machine learning algorithm for harmonizing brain volumetric data of individuals undergoing neuroradiological assessment of Alzheimer disease not encountered during model training. Materials and Methods Neuroharmony is a recently developed method that uses image quality metrics (IQM) as predictors to remove scanner-related effects in brain-volumetric data using random forest regression. To account for the interactions between Alzheimer disease pathology and IQM during harmonization, the authors developed a multiclass extension of Neuroharmony for individuals with and without cognitive impairment.

DIAM, TU Delft, Mekelweg 4, Delft, 2628 CD Netherlands.

We obtain rates of contraction of posterior distributions in inverse problems with discrete observations. In a general setting of smoothness scales we derive abstract results for general priors, with contraction rates determined by discrete Galerkin approximation. The rate depends on the amount of prior concentration near the true function and the prior mass of functions with inferior Galerkin approximation.

Canopy openness rather than tree species determines atmospheric deposition into forests.

Sci Total Environ

December 2024

Forest Ecology and Forest Management Group, Wageningen University and Research Centre, PO Box 47, Wageningen 6700AA, the Netherlands.

Atmospheric nutrient deposition plays a crucial role in supplying nutrients to forests on poor soils, making it a key factor in maintaining nutrient stocks and forest productivity. We compared total atmospheric deposition in production forests of European beech (Fagus sylvatica), Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) by measuring bulk deposition and throughfall while accounting for canopy exchange. We assessed the differences in total deposition resulting from forest management practices such as high-thinning, shelterwood and clearcutting, on forest structure for both macronutrients and micronutrients in areas exposed to high nutrient deposition.
