May 2022

State Key Laboratory of Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery, Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hung Hom, Hong Kong, China.

A highly regio- and chemoselective synthesis of 1-isoindoliums through a facile and novel cascade cyclization reaction of propargylamine-based 1,6-diynes under mild conditions has been developed. Different functional groups were compatible under the optimized reaction conditions, giving the corresponding products in up to 94% yields. Upon treatment with a base, the alkyne moiety of 1-isoindoliums could be further transformed to allenes in excellent yields.

Hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) is one of the most serious complications in neonates and infants. Mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC)-based therapy is emerging as a promising treatment avenue for HIE. However, despite its enormous potential, the clinical application of MSCs is limited by cell heterogeneity, low isolation efficiency and unpredictable effectiveness.

Immobilized Regenerable Active Chlorine within a Zirconium-Based MOF Textile Composite to Eliminate Biological and Chemical Threats.

J Am Chem Soc

October 2021

Department of Chemistry and International Institute of Nanotechnology, Northwestern University, 2145 Sheridan Road, Evanston, Illinois 60208, United States.

The most recent global health crisis caused by the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak and the alarming use of chemical warfare agents highlight the necessity to produce efficient protective clothing and masks against biohazard and chemical threats. However, the development of a multifunctional protective textile is still behind to supply adequate protection for the public. To tackle this challenge, we designed multifunctional and regenerable N-chlorine based biocidal and detoxifying textiles using a robust zirconium metal-organic framework (MOF), UiO-66-NH, as a chlorine carrier which can be easily coated on textile fibers.

Cancer cells are high in heterogeneity and versatility, which can easily adapt to the external stresses via both primary and secondary resistance. Targeting of tumour microenvironment (TME) is a new approach and an ideal therapeutic strategy especially for the multidrug resistant cancer. Recently, we invented AANG, a natural compound formula containing traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) derived Smad3 inhibitor Naringenin (NG) and Smad7 activator Asiatic Acid (AA), for rebalancing TGF-β/Smad signalling in the TME, and its implication on the multidrug resistance is still unexplored.

N6-Methyladenosine (m6A) plays important roles in regulating mRNA processing. Despite rapid progress in this field, little is known about the role and mechanism of m6A modification in myocardial development and cardiomyocyte regeneration. Existing studies have shown that the heart tissues of newborn mice have the capability of proliferation and regeneration, but its mechanism, particularly its relation to m6A methylation, remains unknown.

Silencing of METTL3 effectively hinders invasion and metastasis of prostate cancer cells.

August 2021

Immunology and Reproduction Biology Laboratory & State Key Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry for Life Science, Medical School, Nanjing University, Nanjing 210093, China.

: Since primary prostate cancer (PCa) can advance to the life-threatening metastatic PCa, exploring the molecular mechanisms underlying PCa metastasis is crucial for developing the novel targeted preventive strategies for decreasing the mortality of PCa. RNA N-methyladenosine (mA) is an emerging regulatory mechanism for gene expression and its specific roles in PCa progression remains elusive. Western blotting, quantitative real-time PCR and immunohistochemical analyses were used to detect target gene expression in PCa cells and prostate tissues from patients.

Early changes in astrocyte energy metabolism are associated with late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD), but the underlying mechanism remains elusive. A previous study suggested an association between a synonymous SNP (rs1012672, C→T) in LRP6 gene and LOAD; and that is indeed correlated with diminished LRP6 gene expression in the frontal cortex region. The authors show that LRP6 is a unique Wnt coreceptor on astrocytes, serving as a bimodal switch that modulates their metabolic landscapes.

August 2021

State Key Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, China.

Telomere shortening and dysfunction may cause metabolic disorders, tissue damage and age-dependent pathologies. However, little is known about the association of telomere-associated protein Rap1 with mitochondrial energy metabolism and cardiac aging. Echocardiography was performed to detect cardiac structure and function in Rap1 and Rap1 mice at different ages (3 months, 12 months and 20 months).

All-solution-processed multilayered white polymer light-emitting diodes (WPLEDs) are promising candidates for low-cost and large-area flexible full-color flat-panel displays and solid-state lighting. However, it is still challenging to improve their performance. In this work, based on an elegant strategy of orthogonal materials, the utilization of the cross-linked Ir polymer film ( = -vinyl-carbazole; = 1-(4-vinylbenzyl)-2-phenyl-1-benzo[]imidazole; and = acetylacetone) as the emitting layer (EML) between a hydrophilic polymer film poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) () as the hole injection layer (HIL) and a hydrophobic polymer film ( = 2-(4-(-butyl)phenyl)-5-(4'-vinyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)-2,5-dihydro-1,3,4-oxadiazole) as the electron transport layer (ETL) led to the successful fabrication of reliable all-solution-processed multilayered WPLEDs.

Article Synopsis
  • In 2008, guidelines were established for researching autophagy, which has since gained significant interest and new technologies, necessitating regular updates to monitoring methods across various organisms.
  • The new guidelines emphasize selecting appropriate techniques to evaluate autophagy while noting that no single method suits all situations; thus, a combination of methods is encouraged.
  • The document highlights that key proteins involved in autophagy also impact other cellular processes, suggesting genetic studies should focus on multiple autophagy-related genes to fully understand these pathways.
