Emerging technology in the new era of sensors to detect and quantify neurological reaction-based research has demanded the development of sensors for the neurotransmitter dopamine (DA). In recent decades, electrochemical sensors have offered rapid and sensitive detection of DA, but the presence of interfering compounds, such as uric acid (UA) and ascorbic acid (AA), poses a great threat to the development of DA sensors. Additionally, reusing traditional methods leads to challenges like prolonged preparation and expensive instruments.

Despite recent findings indicating a paradoxical association between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, the impact of HDL-C on subsequent outcomes after ischemic stroke remains unclear. The study aims to investigate the relationships between HDL-C levels and post-stroke functional outcomes while examining the potential modifying influence of HDL-C-related single nucleotide polymorphisms identified through genome-wide association studies. This cohort study included 1,310 patients diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), all of whom had their admission serum lipid profile and genotyping information.

Purpose: Glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH), widely used globally, were initially considered harmless to humans. Experimental studies have suggested that these substances can disrupt iron homeostasis by interfering with iron uptake or triggering inflammatory responses. However, their potential impact on human iron homeostasis remains underexplored.

Reverse electron transfer (RET), an abnormal backward flow of electrons from complexes III/IV to II/I of mitochondria, causes the overproduction of a reduced-type CoQ to boost downstream production of mitochondrial superoxide anions that leads to ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) to organs. Herein, we studied low-coordinated gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) with abundant oxygen-binding sites to form an electron-demanding trapper that allowed rapid capture of electrons to compensate for the CoQ/CoQH imbalance during RET. The AuNCs were composed of only eight gold atoms that formed a Cs-symmetrical configuration with all gold atoms exposed on the edge site.

Non-specific phospholipase C (NPC) is an emerging family of lipolytic enzymes unique to plants and bacteria that play crucial roles in growth and stress responses. Among six copies of NPC isoforms found in Arabidopsis, the role of NPC3 remains elusive to date. Here, we show that NPC3 is a functional non-specific phospholipase C involved in tolerance to tunicamycin (TM)-induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress through the synthesis of phosphocholine (PCho), a reaction product of NPC3.

Pancreatic cancer has one of the highest fatality rates and the poorest prognosis among all cancer types worldwide. Gemcitabine is a commonly used first-line therapeutic drug for pancreatic cancer; however, the rapid development of resistance to gemcitabine treatment has been observed in numerous patients with pancreatic cancer, and this phenomenon limits the survival benefit of gemcitabine. Adenylosuccinate lyase (ADSL) is a crucial enzyme that serves dual functions in de novo purine biosynthesis, and it has been demonstrated to be associated with clinical aggressiveness, prognosis, and worse patient survival for various cancer types.

Background Alopecia areata (AA), a disorder of non-scarring hair loss with a variable relapsing and remitting course, is a common autoimmune disease in children. Although it often presents as several focal small patchy bald lesions, early onset AA can lead to a total loss of scalp hair, even body hairs, a severe subtype. Atopic diseases are common concurrent disorders in AA, especially among those with early onset severe type of hair loss.

Roasting is necessary for bringing out the aroma and flavor of coffee beans, making coffee one of the most consumed beverages. However, this process also generates a series of toxic compounds, including acrylamide and furanic compounds (5-hydroxymethylfurfural, furan, 2-methylfuran, 3-methylfuran, 2,3-dimethylfuran, and 2,5-dimethylfuran). Furthermore, not much is known about the formation of these compounds in emerging coffee formulations containing alcohol and sugars.
