Acrylamide content in popcorn from Spanish market: Risk assessment.

Snacks, including popcorn, are increasingly consumed in Spain and are susceptible to acrylamide (AA) formation. AA, classified as a probable human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), is produced via the Maillard reaction between reducing sugars and amino acids, particularly glucose, and asparagine, when foods are heated above 120 °C. This study aims to analyze the AA content in 91 popcorn samples, categorized by flavor (salted, butter, caramel, flavored, colored, unflavored) and cooking method (ready-to-eat, popcorn maker, microwave), and assess dietary AA exposure in the Spanish population.

Methods: We calculated the American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 (LE8) score to reflect CVH in five cohorts with diverse ancestry backgrounds. Epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS) for LE8 score were conducted, followed by bioinformatic analyses.

Serological Markers as Predictors of Anti-TNF Response in Children with Crohn's Disease.

Background: To advance personalized medicine in pediatric Crohn's disease (CD), we aimed to explore the utility of serological biomarkers in predicting response to anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF).

Methods: Children with CD were enrolled at initiation of anti-TNF and followed prospectively at 4 and 12 months thereafter, as well as at last follow-up. At baseline, 10 serological markers of the "PROMETHEUS® IBD sgi Diagnostic test" were measured, including pANCA, ASCA IgG and IgA, anti-CBir1, anti-OmpC, anti-A4-Fla2, anti-Fla-X, SAA, ICAM-1 and VCAM-1.

Hepatobiliary contrast agents for Liver Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

The use of hepatobiliary-specific contrast agents in liver MRI is a crucial diagnostic tool for evaluating liver disease, enabling the detection and characterisation of focal lesions and vascular alterations, as well as the assessment and grading of chronic hepatopathy. Paramagnetic hepatobiliary-specific contrast agents are gadolinium-based, partially taken up by hepatocytes, and excreted via both renal and biliary pathways. There are two linear ionic molecules that are currently commercially available: gadobenic acid (Gd-BOPTA) and gadoxetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA).

Loss of peroxiredoxin 6 alters lipid composition and distribution resulting in increased sensitivity to ferroptosis.

Peroxiredoxin 6 (PRDX6) is a multifunctional enzyme involved in phospholipid peroxide repair and metabolism. In this study we investigated the global lipid composition of a human hepatocarcinoma cell line SNU475 lacking PRDX6 and lipid related cellular processes. There was a general decrease in multiple lipids species upon loss of PRDX6, in particular sphingomyelins and acylcarnitines, consistent with previously observed alterations in cell signaling pathways and mitochondrial dysfunction.

Background: Vitamin D can influence athletic performance and infection risk. This study aimed to investigate vitamin D status, hematochemical factors, anthropometric and performance parameters, and dietary habits in runners (n = 23) and sedentary healthy individuals (non-runners, n = 22) during the autumn season.

Methods: Both groups had their serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D (ng/mL) levels, blood and performance parameters, and dietary habits measured.

Background/objectives: Olive oil is valued for its health benefits, largely due to its bioactive compounds, including hydroxytyrosol (HTyr) and oleuropein (OLE), which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective properties. However, many of these compounds are lost during the production process. This study developed a functional olive oil-derived product using water-in-oil emulsions (W/O) to incorporate commercial extracts rich in HTyr and OLE.

Acute appendicitis (AA) is one of the most common causes of emergency department visits due to acute abdominal pain, with a lifetime risk of 7-8%. Managing AA presents significant challenges, particularly among vulnerable patient groups, due to its association with substantial morbidity and mortality. : The EUPEMEN (European PErioperative MEdical Networking) project aims to optimize perioperative care for AA by developing multidisciplinary guidelines that integrate theoretical knowledge and clinical expertise from five European countries.

Secreted Phospholipases A2: Drivers of Inflammation and Cancer.

Secreted phospholipase 2 (sPLA2) is the largest family of phospholipase A2 (PLA2) enzymes with 11 mammalian isoforms. Each sPLA2 exhibits different localizations and specific properties, being involved in a very wide spectrum of biological processes. The enzymatic activity of sPLA2 has been well described; however, recent findings have shown that they could regulate different signaling pathways by acting directly as ligands.

Sorafenib as maintenance therapy in FLT3+ acute myeloid leukemia post allogeneic transplantation: a case report.

This case report highlights sorafenib as maintenance therapy postallogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) in a young patient with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with FMS-like tirosine kinase-3 (FLT3)-internal tandem duplication (ITD) mutation. Given the high relapse risk in FLT3-ITD-positive AML, the tyrosine kinase inhibitor sorafenib was administered. Several studies have shown that sorafenib improves survival in younger AML patients when combined with chemotherapy, though side effects can limit use in older patients.

The genomic analyses of bulk samples and samples from multiple regions have shed light on the evolutionary forces acting on tumours. Microviridae bacteriophages influence behavioural hallmarks of food addiction via tryptophan and tyrosine signalling pathways.

Food addiction contributes to the obesity pandemic, but the connection between how the gut microbiome is linked to food addiction remains largely unclear. Here we show that Microviridae bacteriophages, particularly Gokushovirus WZ-2015a, are associated with food addiction and obesity across multiple human cohorts. Further analyses reveal that food addiction and Gokushovirus are linked to serotonin and dopamine metabolism.

The impact of an integrated alcohol policy: The example of Lithuania.

Introduction: Although integrated alcohol policies, characterised by being consistent, structurally connected and interdependent, are considered to be best practices, very few evaluations of such policies exist. We evaluated the impact of two phases of integrated alcohol policies implemented in Lithuania in 2008/2009 and 2017/2018 on adult (15+ years of age) alcohol per capita consumption.

Methods: Alcohol per capita consumption was the main outcome, based on national data from Statistics Lithuania.

Outlier detection of clustered functional data with image and signal processing applications by archetype analysis.

In this study, we introduce an innovative methodology for anomaly detection of curves, applicable to both multivariate and multi-argument functions. This approach distinguishes itself from prior methods by its capability to identify outliers within clustered functional data sets. We achieve this by extending the recent AA + kNN technique, originally designed for multivariate analysis, to functional data contexts.

Vitamin D metabolism-related single nucleotide polymorphisms in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease risk.
