Article Synopsis
  • This study looks at how often and consistently patients with psoriasis use different drugs over 1 to 5 years, specifically focusing on medications like Adalimumab and others.
  • Researchers used real-life data to measure how well patients adhered to their treatment plans using the Proportion of Days Covered (PDC) method.
  • While adherence to treatment was generally good, the study found that persistence (the duration patients stay on treatment) dropped significantly after the second year, highlighting the need for better strategies to encourage long-term treatment.

Linoleic acid (LA) is an essential omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) derived from the diet. Sebocytes, whose primary role is to moisturise the skin, process free fatty acids (FFAs) to produce the lipid-rich sebum. Importantly, like other sebum components such as palmitic acid (PA), LA and its derivative arachidonic acid (AA) are known to modulate sebocyte functions.

Background: The reliability to non-invasively identify features of inflammatory dermatoses by reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) remains unknown. Lack of formal training among RCM readers can result in inconsistent assessments, limiting clinical utility. Specific consensus terminology with representative images is necessary to ensure consistent feature-level interpretation among RCM readers.

Carbapenem-resistant (CRKP) is a prominent cause of nosocomial infections associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality, particularly in oncological patients. The hypermucoviscous (HMV) phenotype and biofilm production are key factors for CRKP colonization and persistence in the host. This study aims at exploring the impact of CRKP virulence factors on morbidity and mortality in oncological patients.

In order to investigate whether products derived from the oxidation of sebum can be responsible for the induction of inflammatory processes, HaCaT keratinocytes were treated with peroxidated squalene. NF-kappaB activation, secretion, and expression of IL-6, as well as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARalpha) mRNA and protein levels, were measured at the end of the treatment and after 24 and 48 hours of recovery. Squalene peroxidation products were administered in amounts able to elicit significant hyperproliferation and to induce lipoxygenase (LOX) activity.

The harmful effects of UVA radiation (320-400 nm) on the skin have been related to the generation of reactive oxygen species. Pheomelanin, the pigment characteristic of fair-skinned individuals, amplifies these effects. In vitro, in the presence of photosensitizing agents, UVA light produces singlet oxygen, which reacts with several targets.
