Antibiotics and heavy metals pose severe risks to human health and ecological environment. Therefore, developing a multifunctional adsorbent to remove these contaminants from wastewater is an urgent need. Herein, novel anionic sulfonic acid groups functionalized magnetic β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) composites (FCD@AA) were synthesized by coating poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPS)) on the surface of magnetic β-CD particles (FCD).

Urban mining of precious metals from electronic waste (e-waste) offers a dual advantage by addressing solid waste management challenges and supplying high-value metals for diverse applications. However, traditional extraction methods generally suffer from poor selectivity and limited capacity in complex acidic leachate. Herein, we present a sulfhydryl-functionalized zirconium-based metal-organic framework (Zr-MSA-AA) as a recyclable and highly selective adsorbent for efficient gold recovery.

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in processed foods are closely linked to intestinal injury. However, the long-term effects of exposure to free Nɛ-carboxymethyl lysine (CML), a prevalent AGE molecule, on intestinal barrier integrity have been rarely evaluated. This study investigated the temporal effects of CML exposure on intestinal barrier permeability in C57BL/6N mice at diet-related doses over 12, 14, and 16 weeks.

Effects of catechins with different structure characteristics on the structure and properties of gluten-catechin covalent complex were investigated, and the structure-activity relationship was further explored. Catechins including epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG), and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) could successfully covalently bind with gluten through C-N and/or C-S bonds. The physicochemical properties of covalent complex, including particle size, thermal stability, content of free amino groups, free sulfhydryl groups and disulfide bonds, were significantly affected by different catechins, and the action order was: EGCG > ECG > EGC > EC.

Fat mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO) was the first m6A demethylase identified, which is responsible for eliminating m6A modifications in target RNAs. While it is well-established that numerous cytosolic and nuclear proteins undergo O-GlcNAcylation, the possibility of FTO being O-GlcNAcylated and its functional implications remain unclear. This study found that a negative correlation between FTO expression and O-GlcNAcylation in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

In this study, we have developed a strategy based on multichrome encoding and "AND" Boolean logic recognition for multiplexed, spatially resolved imaging of single-cell RNA epigenetic modifications, termed as PRoximity Exchange-assisted Encoding of Multichrome (PREEM). Through the implementation of this strategy, we can now map the expression and nuclear distribution of multiple site-specific RNA N6-methyladenosine (mA) modifications at the single-molecule resolution level in single-cells, and reveal the previously unknown heterogeneity.

The limited membrane permeability and bacterial resistance pose significant challenges in the management of intracellular drug-resistant bacterial infections. To overcome this issue, we developed a bacterial-targeted drug delivery system based on quaternary ammonium chitosan-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN-NH-CFP@HACC) for the treatment of intracellular Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. This system utilizes amino-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles to efficiently load cefoperazone (CFP), and the nanoparticles' surface is coated with 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) to target bacteria and enhance macrophage uptake.

The N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification serves as an essential epigenetic regulator in eukaryotic cells, playing a significant role in tumorigenesis and cancer progression. However, the detailed biological functions and underlying mechanisms of m6A regulation in gastric cancer (GC) are poorly understood. Our research revealed that the m6A demethylase ALKBH5 was markedly downregulated in GC tissues, which was associated with poor patient prognosis.

Activin A, a gonadal protein, not only stimulates the pituitary to secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) but also plays a crucial role in regulating various cell behaviors, such as cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion. Studies have shown an association between activin A expression and tumor progression, highlighting its dual role in cancer. Similar to transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), activin A can have both pro-tumor and anti-tumor effects, for instance, it inhibits the migration of lung adenocarcinoma cells, while promotes the migration of triple-negative breast cancer cells.

Microplastics are prevalent in aquatic ecosystems, impacting various forms of aquatic life, including fish. In this study, Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were exposed to two concentrations of microplastics (0 and 500 μg/L) over a 14-day period, during which a comprehensive analysis was conducted to assess the liver accumulation of microplastics and their effects on oxidative stress, the liver response, and transcriptomics. Our findings indicated that microplastics significantly accumulated in the liver and activated the antioxidant system in fish by enhancing the activity of antioxidant enzymes.

The layer-stacking mode of a two-dimensional (2D) material plays a dominant role either in its topology or properties, but remains challenging to control. Herein, we developed alkali-metal ion-regulating synthetic control on the stacking structure of a vinylene-linked covalent triazine framework (termed spc-CTF) for improving hydrogen peroxide (HO) photoproduction. Upon the catalysis of EtONa in Knoevenagel polycondensation, a typical eclipsed stacking mode (spc-CTF-4@AA) was built, while a staggered one (spc-CTF-4@AB) was constructed using LiOH.

Background And Aim: Cannabis use disorder (CUD) is strongly influenced by genetic factors; however the mechanisms underpinning this association are not well understood. This study investigated whether a polygenic risk score (PRS) based on a genome-wide association study for CUD in adults predicts cannabis use in adolescents and whether the association can be explained by inter-individual variation in structural properties of brain white matter or risk-taking behaviors.
Design And Setting: Longitudinal and cross-sectional analyses using data from the IMAGEN cohort, a European longitudinal study integrating genetic, neuroimaging and behavioral measures.
