The cancer risk associated with aristolochic acid (AA) exposure through the consumption of AA-containing herbal medicine has received tremendous attention in the past decades. However, environmental exposure routes from the associated medicinal herb cultivation fields have received little attention. We reveal through liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis of over 400 soil samples collected from three different Aristolochiaceae herb cultivation fields that AAs, which are nephrotoxic and carcinogenic, and aristoloxazines (AXs), a family of recently identified neurotoxic and genotoxic AA analogues, are widespread pollutants in these areas.

Hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase (PHD) inhibitors have been approved for treating renal anemia yet have failed clinical testing for inflammatory bowel disease because of a lack of efficacy. Here we used a multimodel multimodal generative artificial intelligence platform to design an orally gut-restricted selective PHD1 and PHD2 inhibitor that exhibits favorable safety and pharmacokinetic profiles in preclinical studies. ISM012-042 restores intestinal barrier function and alleviates gut inflammation in multiple experimental colitis models.

Cancer Center, Shenzhen Hospital (Futian) of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Shenzhen, Guangdong 518000,  PR China; Shenzhen Traditional Chinese Medicine Oncology Medical Center, Shenzhen, Guangdong 518000, PR China. Electronic address:

Emerging evidence demonstrates that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a crucial role in sorafenib resistance in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and lncRNA metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1) is a dysregulated lncRNA in sorafenib-resistant HCC cells. However, the underlying regulatory mechanisms of MALAT1 in sorafenib-resistant HCC cells remain unclear. In the present study, we demonstrated that 5-methylcytosine (mC) methylation catalyzed by NSUN2 and ALYREF contributed to the RNA stability and upregulation of MALAT1.

Background: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play important roles in various biological processes, including stage development in plants. N-methyladenosine (mA) modification and polyadenylation are noteworthy regulatory processes that impact transcript functions by modulating their abundance. However, the specific landscapes of mA modification and polyadenylation on lncRNAs remain largely unexplored.

Wound dressing is commonly used for skin injuries. The design of wound dressing typically stems from the principles of open-wound management such as infection prevention, moisture balance and healing response. A new wound dressing comprising polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-berberine hydrochloride (BHC)/PVP-cellulose acetate (CA)-BHC/CA-aloin tri-layer Janus fiber was successfully fabricated using trifluid side-by-side electrospinning for antibacterial and wound healing functions.

Adsorption behavior and mechanism of lead by starch/tobermorite composite hydrogel.

Int J Biol Macromol

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Hydraulics and Mountain River Engineering, College of Water Resource and Hydropower, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610065, China.

Tobermorite (TOB) is a synthetic inorganic mineral material with a montmorillonite-like layered structure that removes heavy metals from water, and its incorporation into starch-based hydrogels can optimize the stability and adsorption properties of the hydrogels; it can also significantly reduce the storage pressure of fly ash (FA) and reduce environmental pollution. This study utilized starch/tobemolite/acrylic acid (LR/TOB/AA) as the raw material, successfully synthesizing a starch-tobemolite composite hydrogel (LR-TOB/AA) using aqueous solution polymerization. The hydrogel exhibits excellent water absorption and retention capabilities, as well as a significant adsorption effect on Pb(II).

November 2024

Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, SAR, China.

RNA structure constitutes a new layer of gene regulatory mechanisms. RNA binding proteins can modulate RNA secondary structures, thus participating in post-transcriptional regulation. The DEAH-box helicase 36 (DHX36) is known to bind and unwind RNA G-quadruplex (rG4) structure but the transcriptome-wide RNA structure remodeling induced by DHX36 binding and the impact on RNA fate remain poorly understood.
