Zika virus (ZIKV) infection causes significant human disease that, with no approved treatment or vaccine, constitutes a major public health concern. Its life cycle entirely relies on the cytoplasmic fate of the viral RNA genome (vRNA) through a fine-tuned equilibrium between vRNA translation, replication, and packaging into new virions, all within virus-induced replication organelles (vROs). In this study, with an RNA interference (RNAi) mini-screening and subsequent functional characterization, we have identified insulin-like growth factor 2 mRNA-binding protein 2 (IGF2BP2) as a new host dependency factor that regulates vRNA synthesis.

Biofouling can cause severe infections, device malfunctions, and failures in diagnostics and therapeutics. Proteins such as bovine serum albumin (BSA) have recently been used as coatings to resist biofouling because they combine surface anchoring and antifouling properties. However, their antifouling effectiveness will significantly deteriorate in complex biofluids with high salinity, limiting their practical applications.

December 2024

Laboratorio de Fisiología y Genética de Bacterias Beneficiosas para Plantas, Centro de Bioquímica y Microbiología del Suelo, Departamento de Ciencia y Tecnología, Universidad Nacional de Quilmes - CONICET, Bernal, Argentina.

In Pseudomonas donghuensis SVBP6, isolated from an agricultural field, the well-conserved Gac-Rsm pathway upregulates biosynthesis of the antifungal compound 7-hydroxytropolone (7-HT). However, 7-HT does not fully explain the strain's Gac-Rsm-dependent antimicrobial activity. Here, we combined comparative transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic approaches to identify novel GacS-dependent biosynthetic gene clusters (BGC) and/or extracellular specialized metabolites.

Policies vary substantially in terms of providing sources of psychosocial enrichment. Behavioral economic models of substance use and addiction emphasize that deficits in access to substance-free sources of reward increase substance reinforcing value and risk for addiction. The current study used an alcohol demand curve approach to test the hypothesis that various indices of reward deprivation would be associated with elevated alcohol reinforcing efficacy.

Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen, Charles University, Pilsen, Czech Republic.

Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma (SMEC) of the salivary glands is a rare variant of low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma with scanty cellular atypia characterized by marked fibrosis/sclerosis and a rich inflammatory infiltrate. Herein, we report 25 unpublished cases of SMEC, two of them with prominent eosinophilia (2/25; 8%) and three with abundant IgG4-positive plasma cells (3/25; 12%). In our series of salivary SMEC, molecular analysis using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and/or next-generation sequencing (NGS) provided evidence of MAML2 gene rearrangement in 18 cases of the 21 analyzable cases tested (86%), while this gene locus was intact in 3 cases (14%).

Article Synopsis
  • Urinary N, N-diacetylspermine (DAS) is a low-concentration biomarker for colorectal cancer, but current detection methods are complex and costly, creating a demand for simpler alternatives, especially for low-resource settings.
  • This study introduces an efficient, inexpensive colorimetric assay using recombinant diacetylspermine oxidase (rDAS Ox) to oxidize DAS, which produces hydrogen peroxide and generates a pink color proportional to DAS levels in urine.
  • A novel two-column ion exchange resin protocol was developed to remove interfering metabolites and concentrate DAS, enabling detection of as little as 1 μM DAS and demonstrating effective correlation with known DAS concentrations in urine samples.

Electronic address:

To meet the stringent requirements of wearable and flexible electronics for functionality and comfort, it is urgent to develop green conductive, self-adhesive, and stretchable functional hydrogels. The chelates of transition metal ions and lignosulfonate sodium (LS) can impart multi-functionality to the hydrogel and significantly improve the hydrogel's gelation speed. However, the presence of metal ions may weaken the adhesiveness of hydrogels by shielding the functional adhesive groups.

The gut microbiota has a significant impact on the development and function of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) by modifying bile acid (BA) metabolites. Recently, specific gut microbiome-derived BAs, such as 7-oxo-deoxycholic acid (7-oxo-DCA) and isodeoxycholic acid (isoDCA), have been identified to be shifted inversely in colitis and hepatic liver diseases. Although the responsible gut microbes have been identified, metabolites' effects on IECs remain largely unclear.
