Background: Although some evidence suggests that alcohol, substance use, and mental health issues diminish adherence to HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) among gay, bisexual, and other men-who-have-sex-with-men (gbMSM), findings are somewhat inconsistent and have primarily derived from studies involving non-random samples. Medical chart extraction can provide unique insight by in part surmounting sampling-related limitations, as data for entire PrEP clinic populations can be examined. Our investigation entailed comprehensive chart extraction to assess the extent to which chart-reported alcohol, substance use, and mental health issues were associated with chart-reported PrEP nonadherence.

Serum calcium and phosphorus levels are tightly regulated by the calciotropic hormone parathyroid hormone, fibroblast growth factor 23 and 1,25(OH) vitamin D. Commonly prescribed therapies for iron-deficiency anaemia (IDA) such as ferric carboxymaltose and ferric derisomaltose (FDM) have been shown to disrupt phosphorus homeostasis, resulting in hypophosphataemia. Similarly, denosumab use can result in hypocalcaemia due to the inhibition of osteoclastic maturation, activity and survival.

Background: In STREAM-1 (Strategic Reperfusion Early After Myocardial Infarction), excess intracranial hemorrhage occurred in patients aged ≥75 years receiving full-dose tenecteplase as part of a pharmaco-invasive strategy, whereas no further intracranial hemorrhage occurred after halving the tenecteplase dose. In STREAM-2 (Second Strategic Reperfusion Early After Myocardial Infarction), half-dose tenecteplase was an effective and safe pharmaco-invasive strategy in older patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction presenting within <3 hours, compared with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We prespecified evaluating the efficacy and safety of a half-dose versus full-dose pharmaco-invasive strategy and compared the half-dose pharmaco-invasive strategy to primary PCI in patients aged ≥75 years.

L-arginine: glycine amidinotransferase (AGAT) gained academic interest as the rate-limiting enzyme in creatine biosynthesis and its role in the regulation of creatine homeostasis. Of clinical relevance is the diagnosis of patients with AGAT deficiency but also the potential role of AGAT as therapeutic target for the treatment of another creatine deficiency syndrome, guanidinoacetate N-methyltransferase (GAMT) deficiency. Applying a stable isotope-labeled substrate method, we utilized ARG 15N (ARG-δ2) and GLY 13C15N (GLY-δ3) to determine the rate of 1,2-13C,15N guanidinoacetate (GAA-δ5) formation to assess AGAT activity in various mouse tissue samples and human-derived cells.

Transfer of chirality, or transmission of asymmetric information from one system to another, plays an essential role in fundamental biological and chemical processes and, therefore, is essential for life. This phenomenon also holds immense potential in spintronics in the context of chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS). In the CISS, the spatial arrangement of chiral molecules influences the spin state of electrons during the charge-transfer processes.

Bacterial noncoding RNAs fulfill a variety of cellular functions as catalysts, as scaffolds in protein complexes or as regulators of gene expression. They often exhibit complex tertiary structures that are a key determinant of their biochemical function. Here, we characterize the structured "raiA motif" RNA from Clostridioides difficile, which is conserved in more than 2,500 bacterial species from the phyla Bacillota and Actinomycetota.

Background: Health literacy can be defined as a person's knowledge, motivation and competence in four steps of health-related information processing - accessing, understanding, appraising and applying health-related information. Individuals with experience of migration may encounter difficulties with or barriers to these steps that may, in turn, lead to poorer health outcomes than those of the general population. Moreover, women and men have different health challenges and needs and may respond differently to interventions aimed at improving health literacy.

Emulsifiers play an essential role in the flow behaviour of confectionery products such as chocolate. This research associated emulsifier adsorption onto sugar crystals and its effects on the flow properties of model sugar-in-oil suspensions. A new method to quantify emulsifier adsorption onto sugar crystals dispersed in oil was developed by exploiting the relationship between oil-water interfacial tension and unadsorbed emulsifier in the continuous oil phase.
