Ezrin (EZR) is an actin-associated protein that is often upregulated in cancers. Here we investigate the role of EZR in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and explore the therapeutic potential of a pharmacological EZR inhibitor, NSC305787. ALL patient cohorts exhibit significantly elevated EZR mRNA levels, indicating its association with the malignant phenotype.

Genetic selection for hyperprolific sows resulted in higher proportion of low birthweight piglets and greater birthweight variation within the litter, increasing preweaning mortality. There is evidence that altrenogest supplementation improves post-weaning reproductive performance through higher ovulation rates, and increased embryo survival. This study aimed to evaluate the impacts of altrenogest supplementation during the last week of lactation in primiparous sows on subsequent reproductive performance.

Chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy is associated with an unbalanced immune response and impaired heart function, and available drugs do not prevent its development. Zileuton (Zi), a 5-lypoxigenase inhibitor, affects inflammatory/pro-resolution mediators. Herein, Zi treatment in the early phase of infection reduced parasitemia associated mainly with the direct effect of Zi on the parasite, and the enzyme epoxide hydrolase was the potential molecular target behind the trypanocidal effect.

Starch modified by octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) is a polysaccharide that can be used as a stabilizer in the development of emulsions added with essential oils (EOs). The objective of this study was to develop nanoemulsions based on starch-OSA containing clove essential oil (CEO) and white thyme essential oil (WTEO) and a proportional mixture of the two EOs (CWTEO) using high-pressure homogenization. The emulsions were characterized by particle size, zeta potential, polydispersity index, stability during 150 days, and antifungal activity, with inhibition of mycelial growth, against the fungus Penicillium digitatum.

Background: Twice-yearly subcutaneous lenacapavir has been shown to be efficacious for prevention of HIV infection in cisgender women. The efficacy of lenacapavir for preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in cisgender men, transgender women, transgender men, and gender-nonbinary persons is unclear.
Methods: In this phase 3, double-blind, randomized, active-controlled trial, we randomly assigned participants in a 2:1 ratio to receive subcutaneous lenacapavir every 26 weeks or daily oral emtricitabine-tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (F/TDF).

Glyphosate-based herbicides are extensively utilized in Neotropical agriculture for weed control. Despite their widespread application, concerns regarding water contamination and its consequential impacts on aquatic organisms persist. Notably, there remains a dearth of studies investigating the effects of glyphosate on Neotropical fish species.

Kunth (Piperaceae) essential oil (EO) was evaluated for its toxicity and repellency against red imported fire ants (RIFA), Buren, and a hybrid (HIFA) of red ( and black ( Forel) imported fire ants. Through bioactivity-guided fractionation, two major components, elemicin and myristicin, were isolated from the EO. Removal of treated sand in a digging bioassay was used as the criterion for repellency.

Chagas disease (CD) is a life-threatening illness caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi and there are only two drugs currently available for pharmacotherapy of this neglected infection (benznidazole and nifurtimox). Their limited efficacy in chronic phase of the disease, problems of toxicity and the growing resistance by the protozoan are directly associated to high rates of drug discontinuation by the patients. In the context of the search for new trypanocidal drug candidates, our group has been working with the chemical manipulation of eugenol to obtain new agents active against T.

Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the world's major public health problems. It is characterized by a major inflammatory response, where vitamin D, due to its role in regulating the immune system, and genetic variants involved in its metabolism may play an essential role. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between 13 polymorphisms related to vitamin D metabolism and the COPD risk.

Eucalyptus stands out as one of the most productive tree species for large-scale cultivation. However, like all cultivated crops, it requires specialized management practices, including the control of weeds, pathogens, and pests. Glyphosate is the most widely applied herbicide used in the essential weeding effort, and it ensures the sustainable management of eucalyptus cultivation in Brazil.

Introduction: Qualitative analysis of cocaine in urine is a common practice in emergency settings. However, positive results from urine screening tests do not necessarily indicate recent exposure. In this context, plasma is considered a more appropriate option due to its shorter detection window and better correlation with symptomatology.
