Genetic etiology of Perrault syndrome in Iranian families: first report from Iran and literature review.

Perrault syndrome (PS) is an extremely rare autosomal recessive condition characterized primarily by bilateral sensorineural hearing loss in both genders and primary or secondary ovarian failure in females. Neurological features such as cerebral ataxia, peripheral neuropathy, epilepsy, and intellectual disability are frequent manifestations of PS. To date, six genes have been reported to cause PS, and nearly 100 families have been identified worldwide with this syndrome.

Sarcopenia and hepatic encephalopathy (HE) are complications of chronic liver disease (CLD), which negatively impact clinical outcomes. Hyperammonemia is considered to be the central component in the pathogenesis of HE, however ammonia's toxic effects have also been shown to impinge on extracerebral organs including the muscle. Our aim was to investigate the effect of attenuating hyperammonemia with ornithine phenylacetate (OP) on muscle mass loss and associated molecular mechanisms in rats with CLD.

Cushing's syndrome related to higher rates and earlier onset of cataract: A nationwide retrospective cohort study.

Purpose: To investigate the risk of cataract in patients with Cushing's syndrome (CS) and evaluate whether disease onset occurs at an earlier age compared to general population.

Methods: A nationwide retrospective matched-cohort study including individuals diagnosed with endogenous CS from 2000 to 2023. Patients with CS were matched in a 1:5 ratio with a control group individually matched for age, sex, socioeconomic status, and body mass index.

Irregular and unpredictable fetal movement is the most common cause of artifacts in in utero functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), affecting analysis and limiting our understanding of early functional brain development. The accurate detection of corrupted functional connectivity (FC) resulting from motion artifacts or preprocessing, instead of neural activity, is a prerequisite for reliable and valid analysis of FC and early brain development. Approaches to address this problem in adult data are of limited utility in fetal fMRI.

The rs57095329 polymorphism occurring in the miR-146a promoter modulates its expression and causes downstream pathogenicity. A case-control study in a Chinese Han population was established to investigate the genetic association between the miR-146a rs57095329 polymorphism and postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD).

Thromboxane A (TXA), a prothrombotic factor that induces platelet aggregation and thrombosis, acts as a vasoconstrictor by activating TXA receptors (TP receptors). TXA is extremely unstable and metabolizes into three major metabolites: 2,3-dinor thromboxane B (2,3-dinor-TXB), 11-dehydro TXB(11-dh-TXB), and 11-dehydro-2,3-dinor TXB(11-dh-2,3-dinor-TXB). 8-Iso-prostaglandin F(8-iso-PGF), a prostaglandin-like compound widely considered the best biomarker of oxidative stress, can also activate TP receptors.

Background: Neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation has been implicated as a pathogenic mechanism in both rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and interstitial lung disease (ILD). However, the role of NETs in RA-associated ILD (RA-ILD) and the mechanisms driving NET formation remain unclear. This study aimed to assess the involvement of NETs in RA-ILD and elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

Background: Homocysteine (Hcy) and the proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) significantly contribute to atherosclerosis (AS) as well as coronary lesion severity. Our previous work demonstrated that Hcy upregulates PCSK9, accelerating lipid accumulation and AS. A PCSK9 antagonist reduces plasma Hcy levels in ApoE mice.

Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) is a commonly advocated approach to address antimicrobial resistance. However, AMS is often defined in different ways depending on where it is applied, such that a range of definitions is now in use. These definitions may be functional and well-structured for a given context but are often ill-adapted for collaborative work, creating difficulties for intersectoral communication on AMS and complicating the design, implementation, and evaluation of AMS interventions from a One Health perspective.
