Objective: Recently, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) gene has emerged as a potential candidate gene for susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection. We investigated whether ACE2 G8790A (rs2285666) polymorphism could be a genetic marker for susceptibility to COVID-19 and disease severity in Egyptian children and adolescents.
Methods: This was a prospective case-control study included 580 cases diagnosed with COVID-19, and 580 matched control children and adolescents.

Background/objectives: Infectious bronchitis (IB) is a highly infectious avian disease caused by the infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). The disease causes lesions mainly in the respiratory, reproductive, and renal systems and has a significant economic impact on the poultry industry worldwide.
Methods: We discovered two unique IBV isolates (T-62: PP737794.

Aims: Aging is influenced by genetic determinants and comorbidities, among which diabetes increases the risk for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. There is no therapy to prevent heart dysfunction in aging and diabetic individuals. In previous studies, a single administration of the longevity-associated variant (LAV) of the human BPIFB4 gene halted heart decline in older and type 2 diabetic mice.

Background: By the end of December 2019, a new coronavirus, termed severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), emerged, and the cause of the disease was named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Several genetic factors have been implicated in diverse responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection, such as the C-X-C chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) rs2228014 polymorphism, which has been previously studied in various diseases but has not been explored in the context of COVID-19 severity. The current study aimed to assess the association between the rs2228014 polymorphism in the CXCR4 gene and the severity of COVID-19, which has not been previously reported.

Hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a liver disease-induced pulmonary complication manifested with arterial hypoxemia. Hepatic cholestasis, encountered in several clinical situations, leads to biliary cirrhosis and HPS, both of which are best reproduced by rat common bile duct ligation (CBDL). Experience from liver transplantation suggests hepatoprotective-based therapy would be most effective in HPS treatment Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) enzyme is involved in different pathogenic mechanisms of liver diseases.

The prevalence of inorganic pollutants in the environment, including heavy metals (HMs), necessitates a sustainable and cost-effective solution to mitigate their impacts on the environment and living organisms. The present research aimed to assess the phytoextraction capability of spinach (Spinach oleracea L.), under the combined effects of ascorbic acid (AA) and microwave (MW) irradiation amendments, cultivated using surgical processing wastewater.

Introduction: Experimental hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) is best reproduced in the rat common bile duct ligation (CBDL) model. Vildagliptin (Vild) is an anti-hyperglycemic drug that exerts beneficial anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-fibrotic effects. Therefore, the present search aimed to explore the possible effectiveness of Vild in CBDL-induced HPS model.

The Expansion of modern industry underscores the urgent need to address heavy metal pollution, which is a threat to human-health and environment. Efforts are underwent to develop precise technologies for detecting heavy metal ions (M-ion). One promising approach involves the use of Conjugated Microporous Polymers (CMPs) modified with Triphenylamine (TPA) anderylene (Peryl), known as TPA-Peryl-CMP, which emits strong refluorescence.

Adenomyosis is a gynaecological problem that impacts women's quality of life by causing dysmenorrhea, chronic pelvic pain, and menorrhagia. The search continues for the best medical treatment for symptomatic adenomyosis. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the role of dienogest, an oral progestin, in reducing pain and bleeding associated with adenomyosis.

Endocrine disruptors are synthetic or natural chemicals that can agonize/antagonize hormone receptors or can interfere with the production and secretion of hormones, leading to altered tissue histology and physiology. Pyrogallol is a contaminant widely distributed in aquatic environments that presents health risks to both humans and animals. However, the potential for endocrine disruption by pyrogallol, particularly in fish, are lacking.

T helper 17 (Th17) cells have been reported to be the most powerful factor in autoimmune disorder pathogenesis, which points to the Th17 master cytokine, interleukin (IL)-17A, as the crucial mediator. We aimed to determine the impact of IL-17A polymorphism in the -197 G/A promoter region on level of IL-17 and intensity of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) disease symptoms. This case-control study was conducted at the Department of Clinical Rheumatology of Aswan university Hospital and included 35 people suffering RA and 30 volunteer controls, matched for age and sex.

Most vegetable crops are severely affected by the uptake of heavy metals from the soil. Heavy metals in vegetable bodies generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) that unbalance the antioxidant defense system. This study was initiated to determine the physiological and biochemical characteristics of spinach plants grown on soil contaminated with heavy metals and responding to Bacillus cereus and Bacillus aerius were isolated from soil contaminated with heavy metals.

The present study aimed to investigate the occurrence of caffeine residues in the Nile River according to drainage of treated wastewater at Assiut, Egypt, and the effects of physicochemical parameters and zinc on its concentration. Four different sites were selected to perform the study: S, wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) canal (source site); J, a junction site between WWTP canal and the Nile; R, a reference site in the Nile before J site; and A, a site located after J site in the Nile. Water and sediment samples were collected in Summer 2022 and Winter 2023.

Fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) is the terminal phase of acute liver injury, which is characterized by massive hepatocyte necrosis and rapid hepatic dysfunction in patients without preexisting liver disease. There are currently no therapeutic options for such a life-threatening hepatic failure except liver transplantation; therefore, the terminal phase of the underlying acute liver injury should be avoided. Tomatidine (TOM), asteroidal alkaloid, may have different biological activities, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

In this study, we synthesized and characterized four tetraphenylethene (TPE) analogs, investigated their photophysical properties, and conducted quantum chemical calculations. Some molecules exhibited aggregation-induced emission enhancement behavior and showed efficient emission in both solid and solution states. Solvatochromism was observed in particular derivatives, with solvent polarity influencing either a bathochromic or hypsochromic shift, indicating the occurrence of photoinduced intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) processes.

Two new series of quinazoline-chalcone hybrids were designed, synthesized as histone deacetylase (HDAC)/epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) dual inhibitors, and screened in vitro against the NCI 60 human cancer cell line panel. The most potent derivative, compound 5e bearing a 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl chalcone moiety, showed the most effective growth inhibition value against the panel of NCI 60 human cancer cell lines. Thus, it was selected for further investigation for NCI 5 log doses.
