Article Synopsis
  • The ECMM conducted a study across 20 European countries to analyze the outcomes of patients with culture-proven candidaemia, focusing on how well hospitals followed treatment guidelines.
  • A total of 632 patients were included, revealing a high 90-day mortality rate of 43%, with factors such as age, ICU admission, comorbidity score, and specific types of Candida predicting mortality.
  • Adherence to clinical management guidelines, measured by EQUAL Candida scores, was associated with better survival outcomes, reinforcing the importance of following established treatment protocols.

Article Synopsis
  • Cerebral microbleeds increase the risk of both ischemic stroke and intracranial hemorrhage, complicating treatment choices for patients with atrial fibrillation on various antithrombotic therapies.
  • A study analyzed 7,839 patients, finding that microbleeds significantly raised the relative risk of intracranial hemorrhage (2.74 times) and ischemic stroke (1.29 times), particularly with combination therapies of anticoagulants and antiplatelets.
  • For patients on combination therapy, those with multiple microbleeds faced a higher absolute risk of intracranial hemorrhage compared to ischemic stroke, indicating a need for more research to develop effective preventive strategies.

In this study, we investigated the exciton binding energy and interband transition between the electron and heavy-hole for the single and double quantum wells which have different hyperbolic-type potential functions subject to electric, magnetic, and non-resonant intense laser fields. The results obtained show that the geometric shapes of the structure and the applied external fields are very effective on the electronic and optical properties. In the absence of the external fields, the exciton binding energy is a decreasing function of increasing well sizes except for the strong confinement regime.

Effect of COVID-19 pandemic on grade inflation in higher education in Turkey.

PLoS One

September 2021

Department of Educational Sciences, Akdeniz University, Antalya, Turkey.

This study analyzes the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on grade inflation in higher education. Data were collected from five universities in Turkey, including grades of 152,352 students who attended 2,841 courses conducted by 903 instructors before the COVID-19 pandemic and grades of 149,936 students who attended 2,841 courses conducted by 847 instructors during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of this study demonstrate that the COVID-19 pandemic causes a marginal increase in grades in higher education when the other factors that might explain the differences are controlled.

Objective: To evaluate post-transplantation graft functions noninvasively by using urine C-X-C motif chemokine 10 (CXCL10) and metabolome analysis.

Methods: The 65 living-donor kidney-transplant recipients in our cohort underwent renal biopsy to investigate possible graft dysfunction. The patients were divided into 2 groups, according to pathology reports: chronic allograft dysfunction (CAD; n = 18) and antibody-mediated/humoral allograft rejection (AMR; n = 16).

Is Acute Carotid Artery Stent Thrombosis an Avoidable Complication?

J Stroke Cerebrovasc Dis

October 2015

Department of Cardiology, Clinic of Cardiology, Antalya Education and Research Hospital, Antalya, Turkey.

The most serious complication of carotid artery stenting (CAS) is acute carotid artery stent thrombosis (ACAST). ACAST is a very rare complication, but it may lead to dramatic and catastrophic consequences. The most important cause is inadequate or ineffective antiaggregant therapy.

  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of autologous blood injections compared to corticosteroid injections for treating lateral epicondylitis in patients.
  • A total of 80 participants (21 men, 59 women, mean age 45.2) were treated and assessed for pain, function, and grip strength at multiple intervals post-treatment.
  • Results showed that while corticosteroid injections provided quicker improvements initially, autologous blood injections ultimately led to greater long-term recovery, making it the recommended first-line treatment option.

Background: Epidemiological studies have confirmed the association between vitamin D deficiency and benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). Lately, serum calcium and parathyroid hormones were shown to stimulate prostate growth, assuming an interplay between elements of the calcium metabolism rather than a sole role of any. Finally, aldosterone actions were found to be affected by vitamin D.

Diagnosis of immunodeficiency caused by a purine nucleoside phosphorylase defect by using tandem mass spectrometry on dried blood spots.

J Allergy Clin Immunol

July 2014

Meyer Children's University Hospital, Florence, Italy; Department of Health Sciences, University of Florence, Florence, Italy. Electronic address:

Background: Purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNP) deficiency is a rare form of autosomal recessive combined primary immunodeficiency caused by a enzyme defect leading to the accumulation of inosine, 2'-deoxy-inosine (dIno), guanosine, and 2'-deoxy-guanosine (dGuo) in all cells, especially lymphocytes. Treatments are available and curative for PNP deficiency, but their efficacy depends on the early approach. PNP-combined immunodeficiency complies with the criteria for inclusion in a newborn screening program.
