Innovative super-hydrophilic/superoleophobic eco-friendly sponge composite is fabricated by integrating chemically-modified cellulose with lignin derived from bio-waste wheat-straw. Such combination is implemented by modifying cellulose with thiadiazole-amide and integrating it with lignin using microwave/ultrasonic-powered in-liquid plasma. Physicochemical characteristics of sponge-composite (WL-TDAC) are studied using FTIR, N-physisorption, DLS, SEM, chemical-computational analysis, and surface wettability.

The discovery of novel CDK2 inhibitors is crucial for developing targeted anticancer therapies. Thus, in this study, we aimed to design, synthesize, and evaluate a series of novel pyrazole derivatives (2a-g, 7a-d, 8a and b, 9, and 10) for their potential as CDK2/cyclin A2 enzyme inhibitors. The newly synthesized compounds were screened at 50 μM for CDK2 inhibition, followed by IC profiling of the most promising candidates.

Association of Gene Variants with Egg Quality Traits in Indigenous Chicken Breeds.

Animals (Basel)

October 2024

Department of Poultry Production, Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University, Hadayek Shoubra, Cairo 11241, Egypt.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study examined genetic variations in indigenous chickens, specifically focusing on exons 1 and 6, and assessed the relationship between certain genetic markers (SNPs) and egg quality traits.
  • - While most chicken strains followed expected genetic distributions, some showed significant deviations, particularly affecting the TT genotype, hinting at influences like genetic drift and selection.
  • - The research indicated that specific SNPs can negatively or positively impact egg quality, with certain genotypes linked to better eggshell and yolk characteristics, suggesting their potential use in improving egg quality traits through marker-assisted selection (MAS).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of endoscopic examinations after acute diverticulitis, focusing on the rates of colorectal cancer and other malignancies.
  • A total of 1,120 patients were analyzed, with low rates of cancer found in those with uncomplicated diverticulitis (0.14%), while higher rates were observed in those with complications (up to 5.4%).
  • The results suggest that routine endoscopic investigations have limited value in uncomplicated cases, but should be considered for complicated cases or when suspicious findings arise.

Improved Quantification of MicroPET/CT Imaging Using CT-derived Scaling Factors.

Mol Imaging Biol

December 2024

Division of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, The Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology and Radiological Science, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, JHOC Room 3243, 601 N. Caroline St, Baltimore, 21287, MD, USA.

Purpose: Combined micro-PET/CT scanners are widely employed to investigate models of brain disorders in rodents using PET-based coregistration. We examined if CT-based coregistration could improve estimates of brain dimensions and consequently estimates of nondisplaceable binding potential (BP) in rodent PET studies.

Procedures: PET and CT scans were acquired on 5 female and 5 male CD-1 mice with 3-[F]fluoro-5-(2-pyridinylethynyl)benzonitrile ([F]FPEB), a radiotracer for the metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 5 (mGluR5).

Background: Pediatric epilepsy is a complicated neuropsychiatric disorder that is characterized by recurrent seizures and unusual synchronized electrical activities within brain tissues. It has a substantial effect on the quality of life of children, thus understanding of the hereditary considerations influencing epilepsy susceptibility and the response to antiepileptic medications is crucial. This study focuses on assessing the correlation of the ABCB1, ABCC2, CYP1A2, and CYP2B6 genetic polymorphisms with the susceptibility to epileptic seizures and their contributions to antiepileptic medication throughout the course of the disease.

Introduction: Anaphylaxis is a globally increasing allergic reaction that is often fatal. Recently, our previous study reported the possibility of using the modified natural products "sodium R-lipoate (NaRLA) and enzymatically modified isoquercitrin (EMIQ)" as potential novel safe agents against the non-immunological-degranulation of mast cells.

Methods: Here, we extended our previous findings by determining the antianaphylactic activity of 50 and 100 mg/kg body weight of NaRLA and EMIQ (given orally and prior to local or systemic challenge) in mice models of ovalbumin (OVA)-induced IgE-dependent active cutaneous anaphylaxis (ACA) and active systemic anaphylaxis (ASA) in comparison with sulfasalazine (SSZ, amast cell stabilizer).

The role of vitamin D in amelioration of oral lichen planus and its effect on salivary and tissue IFN-γ level: a randomized clinical trial.

BMC Oral Health

July 2024

Department of Oral Medicine, Diagnosis, and Periodontology, Faculty of Oral and Dental Surgery, Modern University for Technology and Information, MTI University, Cairo, Egypt.

Background And Objectives: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a common, prevalent, immune-mediated, inflammatory disease affecting both the skin and oral mucosa and is considered one of the potentially malignant diseases. Since OLP is regarded as an immunologically mediated disease, some studies suggest the use of vitamin D (VD) for its management as it exhibits immune-modulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, as well as anti-proliferative, pro-differentiative, and anti-angiogenic effects. VD has demonstrated a suppressive effect on TH1 pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IFN-γ while augmenting the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines.

Duo photoprotective effect via silica-coated zinc oxide nanoparticles and Vitamin C nanovesicles composites.

Pharm Res

July 2024

Department of Pharmaceutics, Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), former; National Organization of Drug Control and Research (NODCAR), Cairo, Egypt.

Article Synopsis
  • Zinc Oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are commonly used in sunscreens for UV protection but raise concerns about toxicity; silica is used to encapsulate them to mitigate this risk.
  • A Vitamin C derivative called Magnesium Ascorpyl Phosphate (MAP) is a strong antioxidant that helps protect skin from UV damage and oxidative stress; combining it with silica-coated ZnO NPs may enhance protection.
  • Research showed that the combination of silica-coated ZnO NPs and MAP nanovesicles effectively protects against UV damage in mice and significantly improves skin condition in human studies by reducing melanin, roughness, and wrinkle depth.
