Background and objective The use of ivermectin and nitazoxanide in the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been a subject of controversy. In this study, we aimed to describe our clinical experience in treating COVID-19 patients with these drugs in Mexico. Material and methods The study involved out- and inpatient clinical assessments of COVID-19 patients conducted in Mexico City from September 2020 to November 2021.

Comparative efficacy of tranexamic acid versus placebo on hemostatic outcomes after the surgical debridement of burn patients: A randomized controlled clinical trial.

Introduction: Burns are traumatic events that can affect multiple systems beyond the skin. The rapid removal of the burn eschar is a key step in the effective treatment of severe burns, and surgical debridement is currently the standard of care for eschar removal in burn patients. However, surgical debridement is highly hemorrhagic.

Introduction: Schizophrenia is a severe and persistent mental disorder that affects around 21 million people worldwide. The etiology of schizophrenia is currently understood as heterogeneous and multifactorial. Genetic and environmental factors are the most common explanations for the onset of schizophrenia, but along with these, hybridized cultural ideas coexist between medical, superstitious, and religious paradigms.

Partial or Focal Brachytherapy for Prostate Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Introduction: Recent advances in image-guided brachytherapy have allowed for treatment volume reduction in the treatment of prostate cancer, with the aim to optimize disease control and reduce toxicities. This systematic review reports on the efficacy and safety of focal brachytherapy for treatment of patients with localized prostate cancer.

DR is a complex complication of DM with multiple biochemical pathways implicated in its genesis and progression. Circulating OS and mitochondrial function biomarkers represent potential candidates in the DR staging system. We conducted a comparative cross-sectional study comparing the OS biomarkers: TAC, GR, NOS, CARB, and hydroperoxydes, as well as mitochondrial function biomarkers: ATP synthase and ATPase activity in healthy volunteers, DM w/o DR, Moderate and Severe NPDR, and PDR.

Characterizing Drug use Typologies and Their Association with Sexual Risk Behaviors: A Latent Class Analysis Among Men who have Sex with Men in Mexico.

Introduction: Drug use behaviors are closely associated with increased risk for HIV and other STIs among men who have sex with men (MSM) globally. Less is known about the drug use characteristics and their association with HIV/STI risk among MSM in Mexico, who have 13 times higher risk of acquiring HIV than the general population. We characterized distinct classes of drug use behaviors among a nationwide sample of MSM in Mexico and tested their associations with HIV risk behaviors.

Surgical Treatment for Scaphocephaly Using a Modified Melbourne Technique in Mexico: An Illustrative Case and Literature Review.

Craniosynostosis is the premature fusion of one or more skull vault sutures, most commonly the sagittal sutures, leading to a long, narrow head shape known as scaphocephaly. Surgery is recommended to create space for brain growth to treat scaphocephaly. Delayed treatment may require more complex surgery to achieve the desired head shape.

Types of Injuries and the Severity of Shoulder Dysfunction Associated with Diabetes Mellitus in Patients with Functional Impairment: A Case-Control Study.

Background/objectives: Patients with diabetes have been reported to experience a higher prevalence of shoulder disorders compared to those without diabetes or with other medical conditions. However, the specific types of shoulder injuries and the extent of functional impairment associated with diabetes mellitus remain unclear. This study aimed to assess the association between diabetes and specific shoulder injuries, as well as the degree of functional impairment in affected patients.

Ectopic Papillary Thyroid Cancer: About a Case.

Cervical lymph nodes can indicate various inflammatory or cancerous conditions. Ectopic thyroid carcinoma, particularly papillary carcinoma, can be found in resected lymph nodes even without clinical thyroid abnormalities, known as hidden (incidental) metastasis. We present the case of a 42-year-old woman with a 5 cm thyroid nodule and associated symptoms.

The experience with Hugo™ robot-assisted surgery on complex gynecological patients in Panama.

The Hugo robotic assisted surgery system is a relatively new robotic platform developed by Medtronic. The study objective was to describe the experience of using Hugo robotic assisted surgery in gynecological surgeries and compare robotic assisted surgery-related outcomes between complex and non-complex gynecological patients at the Pacifica Salud Hospital. We performed secondary data retrospective analysis of 144 consecutive patients who underwent gynecological surgery with Hugo robotic assisted surgery system (Medtronic) at the Pacifica Salud hospital in Panama City from July 19, 2021, to August 3, 2023.

Spatiotemporal analysis of a population management intervention for dogs and cats in a municipality in central Mexico.

Background And Aim: The overpopulation of dogs and cats has generated socioeconomic, political, and animal welfare problems, in addition to an important public health problem, due to the risk of zoonotic diseases. This study aimed to analyze the spatiotemporal coverage of canine and feline sterilization services provided by a governmental agency in the rural and urban areas of the municipality of Tequisquiapan, Querétaro.

Materials And Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Tequisquiapan's municipality, Querétaro, Mexico, from July 2019 to September 2022.

Pica is associated with lower willingness to change negative habits of diet and exercise, inadequate lifestyle, and less healthful food consumption in dialysis.

Background: In dialysis patients, on the one hand unwillingness to change negative lifestyle patterns is associated with worse nutritional status and unhealthy lifestyle, whereas on the other, pica may be highly prevalent. However, it is not known whether pica is associated with unwillingness to change negative lifestyle behaviors, as well as with consumption of different types of foods. This study aimed to investigate this issue.

Nitrofurantoin as an Add-On to Conventional Prophylaxis for the Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections in Kidney Recipients: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) constitute one of the main complications in kidney recipients, increasing both morbidity and mortality. Due to the resurgence of antimicrobial resistance, new prophylactic approaches are being investigated. Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic from the nitrofuran group that is effective against several Gram-negative and Gram-positive organisms; hence, there has been a resurgence in its prescription for treating MDR pathogens.

Gut Microbiome Is Related to Cognitive Impairment in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients.

Gut microbiota disturbances may influence cognitive function, increasing uremic toxins and inflammation in dialysis patients; therefore, we aimed to evaluate the association of the gut microbiota profile with cognitive impairment (CI) in patients on automated peritoneal dialysis (APD). In a cross-sectional study, cognitive function was evaluated using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment in 39 APD patients and classified as normal cognitive function and CI. The gut microbiota was analyzed using the 16S rRNA gene sequencing approach.

Autoantibodies against beta cells to predict early insulin requirements in pediatric patients with clinically diagnosed type 2 diabetes.

Background: Autoimmunity has emerged as a probable disease modifier in patients with clinically diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), that is, patients who have insulin resistance, obesity, and other cardiovascular risk factors, suggesting that the presence of glutamic acid decarboxylase (anti-GAD65), islet antigen 2 (anti-IA2), and zinc transporter 8 (anti-Zn8T) antibodies could have deleterious effects on beta cell function, causing failure and earlier requirement for insulin treatment.

Aim: To evaluate anti-GAD65, anti-IA2 and anti-Zn8T as predictors of early insulin requirement in adolescents with a clinical diagnosis of T2DM.

Methods: This was a case-control study in patients with clinically diagnosed with T2DM (68 cases and 64 controls with and without early insulin dependence respectively), male and female, aged 12-18 years.
