Objectives: To quantify the extent of crack-tip plasticity, crack opening displacement (COD) and crack bridging for crack growth perpendicular (HAH) and parallel (RAR) to the tubules in elephant dentin under both hydrated and dry conditions to better understand their influence on intrinsic and extrinsic toughening during crack growth.

Evaluating the risk of emergence and transmission of vector-borne diseases requires knowledge of the genetic and environmental contributions to pathogen transmission traits. Compared to the significant effort devoted to understanding the biology of malaria transmission from vertebrate hosts to mosquito vectors, the strategies that malaria parasites have evolved to maximize transmission from vectors to vertebrate hosts have been largely overlooked. While determinants of infection success within the mosquito host have recently received attention, the causes of variability for other key transmission traits of malaria, namely the duration of parasite development and its virulence within the vector, as well as its ability to alter mosquito behavior, remain largely unknown.

mGlu5 receptors are involved in mechanisms of activity-dependent synaptic plasticity, and are targeted by drugs developed for the treatment of CNS disorders. We report that mGlu3 receptors, which are traditionally linked to the control of neurotransmitter release, support mGlu5 receptor signaling in neurons and largely contribute to the robust mGlu5 receptor-mediated polyphosphoinositide hydrolysis in the early postnatal life. In cortical pyramidal neurons, mGlu3 receptor activation potentiated mGlu5 receptor-mediated somatic Ca mobilization, and mGlu3 receptor-mediated long-term depression in the prefrontal cortex required the endogenous activation of mGlu5 receptors.

Macrolane VRF, a biodegradable, stabilized hyaluronic acid gel, was used for breast enhancement 2008-2012. Unidirectional connections from the cortex to the matrix of the corpus striatum initiate the cortico-basal ganglia (BG)-thalamocortical loop, thought to be important in momentary action selection and in longer-term fine tuning of behavioural repertoire; a discrete set of striatal compartments, striosomes, has the complementary role of registering or anticipating reward that shapes corticostriatal plasticity. Re-entrant signals traversing the cortico-BG loop impact predominantly frontal cortices, conveyed through topographically ordered output channels; by contrast, striatal input signals originate from a far broader span of cortex, and are far more divergent in their termination. The term 'disclosed loop' is introduced to describe this organisation: a closed circuit that is open to outside influence at the initial stage of cortical input.

Talin is a ubiquitous, large focal adhesion protein that links intracellular networks with the extracellular matrix (ECM) via its connection with the actin cytoskeleton and membrane integrins. It is one of a handful molecules that can expose new recognition sites when undergoing force-induced mechanical unfolding, and it can bind and recruit cytoskeletal proteins that are involved in mechanotransduction. Talin has attracted great interest in the field of mechanobiology because of its plasticity in undergoing conformational changes under force stimulation as well as its cellular localization that bridges the cytoskeleton with the ECM.
