Human recombination-activating gene (RAG) deficiency can manifest with distinct clinical and immunological phenotypes. By applying a multiomics approach to a large group of -mutated patients, we aimed at characterizing the immunopathology associated with each phenotype. Although defective T and B cell development is common to all phenotypes, patients with hypomorphic variants can generate T and B cells with signatures of immune dysregulation and produce autoantibodies to a broad range of self-antigens, including type I interferons.

The Effect of Cholesterol-Loaded Cyclodextrin and Resveratrol Compounds on Post-Thawing Quality of Ram Semen.

Vet Med Sci

January 2025

Department of Reproduction and Artificial Insemination, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, İstanbul University-Cerrahpasa, Avcilar, İstanbul, Turkey.

Ram sperm are more vulnerable to freezing than those of most other farm animals. During sperm freezing, the cell membrane loses some of its cholesterol, which regulates signalling mechanisms and prevents premature capacitation. Resveratrol (RES) increases the fluidity of the cell membrane, which becomes peroxidized during freezing and reduces free radicals.

Tree bark is an important natural polymer for sound absorption. The main components in the bark of different tree species are polymers with high molecular weight such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. The aim of this study is to determine the noise reduction coefficient (NRC), lignin, alcohol-benzene solubility (ABS), carbon (C), and nitrogen (N) contents in samples taken from the bark of different tree species-black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), narrow-leaved ash (Fraxinus angustifolia), stone pine (Pinus pinea), silver lime (Tilia tomentosa), sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa), sessile oak (Quercus petraea), and maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) and to investigate the relationship between these chemical properties and sound absorption measurements.

Morphological patterns of the European bison (Bison bonasus) skull.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Morphological Sciences, Institute of Veterinary Medicine, Warsaw University of Life Sciences-SGGW, 02-776, Warsaw, Poland.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of environmental factors, sexual selection, and genetic variation on skull morphology by examining the skull structure of the European bison, a species at risk of extinction, and comparing it to other bovid species. The skull of the European bison was significantly bigger than that of other species of the tribe Bovini, and the results revealed considerable morphological differences in skull shape compared to other Bovini samples. The bison skull exhibited a broader shape in the frontal region and a more laterally oriented cornual process.

Introduction: The Naples prognostic score (NPS) is a novel indicator of nutritional and inflammatory statuses in cancer patients. Development of atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery (POAF) is a common complication that increases the incidence of adverse events. Numerous studies have investigated predictors of POAF.

Montelukast, a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) approved for the treatment of asthma and allergic rhinitis, is widely used, though real-world data on its application in asthma management remain limited. This registry-based study evaluated the use of montelukast in adult asthma patients, examining demographic and disease characteristics, asthma control status, asthma phenotypes, presence of atopy, and treatment regimens. Among 2053 patients analyzed, 61.

Status of IKZF1 Deletions in Diagnose and Relapsed Pediatric B-ALL Patients.

Biochem Genet

January 2025

Department of Genetics, Aziz Sancar Institute of Experimental Medicine, Istanbul University, Topkapı mh, Gureba Hastanesi Cd. No:69, 34093, Fatih, Istanbul, Turkey.

IKZF1 deletions (ΔIKZF1) are common in precursor B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) and are assumed to have a prognostic impact. We aimed to determine the prognostic implications of ΔIKZF1 and CRLF2 overexpression in pediatric B-ALL. Furthermore, we sought to compare the multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay with standard multiplex ligand-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) methods to ascertain IKZF1 status in a clinical context.

Malignant mesenchymal tumors are a diverse group of aggressive cancers originating from mesenchymal cells in connective tissues such as bone, muscle, cartilage, and fat. These tumors often invade surrounding tissues and metastasize to distant organs, posing significant treatment challenges. Among them, malignant mesenchymal tumors located in the distal femur are particularly rare, with limited reports detailing effective surgical and functional reconstruction strategies following wide resection.

Study Design: Prospective biochemical study of comparison of A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase with Thrombospondin motifs-4 (ADAMTS-4) and A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase with Thrombospondin motifs 5 (ADAMTS5) levels in preoperative and postoperative venous blood, as well as in disc tissue obtained during surgery, in patients undergoing surgery for intervertebral disc disease, with enzyme levels in venous blood from a control group.

Objective: To compare the levels of ADAMTS-4 and ADAMTS-5 between patients with degenerative intervertebral discs and a healthy control group, aiming to identify biomarkers associated with intervertebral disc degeneration.

Literature: Although numerous studies have investigated the relationship between ADAMTS-4 and ADAMTS-5 enzymes and degeneration in experimental rat models and human tissues, no study has correlated their serum levels with intervertebral disc degeneration.

The detection of intracellular biothiols (cysteine, N-acetyl cysteine, and glutathione) with high selectivity and sensitivity is important to reveal biological functions. In this study, a 2-(2-methoxy-4-methylphenoxy)-3-chloro-5,8-dihydroxynaphthalene-1,4-dione (DDN-O) compound was newly synthesized and used as a fluorogenic probe (detector molecule) in the fluorometric method for the rapid, highly selective, and sensitive determination of biothiols. The intensity values (λ = 260 nm, λ = 620 nm) of the product were measured by adding biothiols to the reaction medium at varying concentrations and the glutathione equivalent thiol content values of each biothiol were calculated.

Objective: Juvenile SLE (jSLE) is an autoimmune disease characterised by the presence of high levels of autoantibodies, predominantly targeting nuclear antigens, resulting in a breakdown of self-tolerance. However, its pathogenesis is multifactorial and poorly understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-γ) as biomarkers for jSLE.

Objective: The limited predictive effect of genotype on familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) phenotype suggests that epigenetic factors and alternative mechanisms that may cause IL-1β release could contribute to phenotypic heterogeneity. The objective of this study was to examine the role of IL-1β levels and miR-21-5p, cathepsin B and pyrin levels, which were identified as potential factors causing IL-1β release through the use of bioinformatics tools, in the pathogenesis of FMF and their relationship with disease severity.

Materials And Methods: 50 paediatric patients with FMF and 40 healthy children were enrolled in this study.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of Pectoral Nerve Block 2 (PECS-2) and Erector Spinae Plane Block (ESP), which are accepted to have an effect on post-operative pain control after breast cancer surgery, on both acute and chronic pain.

Method: In this double-blind, prospective, randomized study, patients were randomized using a sealed envelope method into two groups: those who underwent PECS-2 (Group P) and those who underwent ESP (Group E) before extubation at the end of the operation. The numerical rating scale (NRS) of patients was queried by a blinded researcher at post-operative 1, 2, 6, 12, and 24 h.
