Posterior Rigid Instrumentation of C7: Surgical Considerations and Biomechanics at the Cervicothoracic Junction. A Review of the Literature.

Background: The cervicothoracic junction is a challenging anatomic transition in spine surgery. It is commonly affected by different types of diseases that may significantly impair stability in this region. The seventh cervical vertebra (C7) is an atypical cervical vertebra with unique anatomic features compared to subaxial cervical spine (C3 to C6).

Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy: Spontaneous Fertilization.

Aim: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is the most common liver disease in pregnancy. Although it was shown that multiple pregnancy and hormone therapies increase the risk of ICP, there is limited information that compared spontaneous fertilization and fertilization (IVF) from the aspect of developing ICP. In our study, we investigated the potential relationship between ICP and IVF/ spontaneous pregnancy.

A rapidly expanding calvarial Langerhans cell histiocytosis with low Ki-67 in an adult: a challenging diagnosis on magnetic resonance imaging.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis may have a wide variety of clinical presentations. The growth of localised form is usually slow and it mainly involves bones such as the skull, femur, spine, ribs, mandible and pelvis in children. The spectrum of clinical manifestations and magnetic resonance imaging findings of the disease may sometimes mimic infections as well as benign and malignant tumours.

Imaging Findings of the Unusual Presentations, Associations and Clinical Mimics of Acute Appendicitis.

There are many kinds of unusual presentations or associations and clinical mimics of acute appendicitis, and definitive diagnosis requires knowledge of the imaging findings in some cases. The unusual presentations and associations of acute appendicitis included in this study are perforated appendicitis, acute appendicitis occurring in hernias, acute appendicitis with cystic endosalpingiosis, intussusception of appendix, and acute appendicitis with pregnancy. We also present uncommon gastrointestinal, urinary and gynecologic clinical mimics of acute appendicitis including anomalous congenital band, duplication cysts, giant Meckel's diverticulitis, inflammatory fibroid polyp, renal artery thrombosis, spontaneous urinary extravasation and OHVIRA syndrome.

Spinal meningiomas: 61 cases with predictors of early postoperative surgical outcomes.

Background: Spinal meningiomas are benign, well-circumscribed and slowly-growing intradural tumors that compress the spinal cord. Hereby, a retrospective review of 61 spinal meningioma cases evaluated in terms of demographic, clinical, pathological and radiological features to predict the early postoperative functional outcomes.

Methods: Patients' records and MRI images of all the histologically confirmed spinal meningioma cases that underwent surgical resection at two university hospitals from January 2005 to June 2016 were retrospectively reviewed.

Proposal of a new radiological classification system for spinal meningiomas as a descriptive tool and surgical guide.

Objectives: 1) To provide neurosurgeons and radiologists with a new quantitative and anatomical method to describe spinal meningiomas (SM) consistently. 2) To provide a guide to the surgical approach needed and amount of bony resection required based on the proposed classification. 3) To report the distribution of our 58 cases of SM over different Stages and Subtypes in correlation to the surgical treatment needed for each case.

A clinical scoring system to predict the development of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in premature infants.

Unlabelled: OBJECTıVE: The aim of this study is to develop a scoring system for the prediction of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in preterm infants in the first 7 days of life.

Methods: A prospective, clinical study was conducted in Bahcesehir University, Medical Park Goztepe Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, with the enrollment of 144 preterm infants with gestational age between 24 and 34 weeks. All preterms were followed up for IVH after birth until the 4th week of life.

Contribution of intraoperative neuromonitoring to the identification of the external branch of superior laryngeal nerve.

Objective: We evaluated the contribution of intraoperative neuromonitoring to the visual and functional identification of the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve.

Material And Methods: The prospectively collected data of patients who underwent thyroid surgery with intraoperative neuromonitoring for external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve exploration were assessed retrospectively. The surface endotracheal tube-based Medtronic NIM3 intraoperative neuromonitoring device was used.

Extralaryngeal division of the recurrent laryngeal nerve: A common and asymmetric anatomical variant.

Objective: Recognition of extralaryngeal branching of the recurrent laryngeal nerve is crucial because prevention of vocal cord paralysis requires preservation of all branches of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. We assessed the prevalence of extralaryngeal branching of the recurrent laryngeal nerve and the median branching distance from the point of bifurcation to the entry point of the nerve into the larynx.

Material And Methods: Prospective operative data on recurrent laryngeal nerve branching were collected from 94 patients who underwent thyroid or parathyroid surgery between September 2011 and May 2012.

Diagnosis and severity criteria for sinusoidal obstruction syndrome/veno-occlusive disease in pediatric patients: a new classification from the European society for blood and marrow transplantation.

The advances in hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) over the last decade have led to a transplant-related mortality below 15%. Hepatic sinusoidal obstruction syndrome/veno-occlusive disease (SOS/VOD) is a life-threatening complication of HCT that belongs to a group of diseases increasingly identified as transplant-related, systemic endothelial diseases. In most cases, SOS/VOD resolves within weeks; however, severe SOS/VOD results in multi-organ dysfunction/failure with a mortality rate >80%.

Fertility preservation issues in pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: practical approaches from the consensus of the Pediatric Diseases Working Party of the EBMT and the International BFM Study Group.

Chryseobacterium indolegenes infection in a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Chryseobacterium indolegenes is a rare pathogen that causes a variety of infections in inviduals who are mostly hospitalized with severe underlying diseases. Here we present a case of C. indolegenes in a 69-year-old male with chronic obstructive pulonary disease (COPD) who was admitted to the chest disease outpatient clinic with symptoms like cough, fever and sputum production and followed up on a suspicion of pneumonia.

Coincidence of Polysplenia, Kartagener Syndrome, Dorsal Pancreas Agenesis, and Polycystic Kidney Disease in an Adult.

Here we present the case of an adult male patient with the anomalies of polysplenia, Kartagener syndrome, dorsal pancreas agenesis, and adult polycystic kidney disease. Familiarity with this extremely rare coincidence may improve diagnostic accuracy and patient management.

Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Thickness Measurement by Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography in Patients with Major Depressive Disorder.

Introduction: In recent years, an increasing number of studies have researched retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) changes in neurodegenerative disorders. In this study, our aim was to determine structural RNFL changes in patients with major depressive disorder.

Methods: A total of 30 patients with major depressive disorder and 30 age- and sex-matched controls were recruited.

Primary Pituitary Fibrosarcoma with Previous Adenoma.

Background: Pituitary sarcomas are rare clinical entities most often encountered as secondary neoplasms representing late sequelae of radiation therapy to the sellar region. Primary pituitary fibrosarcomas (PPFS), in contrast, are exceptionally rare tumors with very few cases described in the literature thus far. Herein, we present a case of PFFS and describe it in the context of the existing literature.

Follicular fluid cerebellin and betatrophin regulate the metabolic functions of growing follicles in polycystic ovary syndrome.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the changes of follicular fluid (FF) and serum levels of cerebellin precursor protein 1 (cbln1) and betatrophin in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) undergoing fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist protocol.

Methods: Twenty infertile women with PCOS and 20 control women diagnosed as poor responders undergoing ovarian stimulation with a GnRH antagonist were included. Blood samples were obtained during ovum pick-up.
